I'm pretty sure Strike is the best damage type this time around. A lot of tough enemies (anything in armour, anything made of rock or crystal) are weak to it, and the only enemies I've found that resist it are slimes that you can just walk past or poke with a torch.
I feel like this is usually true of most Souls games
Hey so the reason I specified where I was in the game's story in my post was so people wouldn't throw a fucking spoiler at me from stuff learned later if they replied so thank you very much for completely disregarding that caution cursedking
??? That revelation is from way before mountaintops?
No it certainly isn't. I have been everywhere in the world except end of Mountaintops and the places after. I've read every item description I've come across. Killed every available demigod before Mountaintops. Not once have I seen anything like what you replied to me with.
I just listed all the stuff in the post. It definitely is, it’s just not overtly stated. It’s certainly not stated any clearer after the section you’re in.
In the beginning, everything was in opposition to the Erdtree. But through countless victories in war, it became the embodiment of Order.
protection of the erdtree spell, from atlus plateau.
The “star beasts” that are in atlus and gelmir and elsewhere.
Like, the evidence is all there before you fight morgott
Re: Erdtree
I have not seen anything to imply that the Erdtree itself is an alien lifeform sucking energy out of the planet like JENOVA. The star beasts, even Ansel, are indeed from the deep cosmos but there's also nothing to link the Erdtree itself to them beyond the Greater Will and the Fingers, which remain enigmatic "god"like beings as far as I know. Maybe they're also from the cosmos. Maybe a higher plane like old gods. Maybe something else.
The only connecting factor I had for the Fingers and the Erdtree is that the Fingers support a new Elden Lord, but at the moment I was ALSO under the impression the Erdtree was its own separate entity considering the entire reason I'm on the Mountaintops is because the Erdtree refused to let me inside to mend the Elden Ring and the Fingers went silent. What happens after I burn it to get inside, and whenever Farum Azula comes into the picture after that brief visit via the Belfry portal, that I don't know and would like to not know until I reach it.
one of the things pointing towards the tree being alien is that its base, and the capital with it, looks a lot like an impact crater.
There is also the Elden Ring itself, called The Root of the Erdtree in one of the trailers. It broke in 6 major fragments and a lotnof splinters, one of which reached the player. I haven't seen any indication where it came from, apart that it came into Marikas possession.

Not quite, by my estimation. There are a number of enemies that take the most damage from slash and stab. A lot of fleshy bosses do.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Keep in mind that standard damage is separate from slash/thrust/strike
Lots of enemies seem vulnerable to each type, even bosses
But swords don't usually do slash or thrust, just standard. Slash is for katanas and other fancy shmancy weapons
I honestly find Elden Ring's fancy damage types to be so much nonsense, because outside of guess work on "Seems like it's made of hard stuff" or "very fleshy" there's little to no feedback or way to determine what's good vs what. It very much feels like a system that's there with little consideration of practical/useful gameplay benefits.
And you know, upgrades frustrating, i don't think the game's equipment system/build system encourages you switching weapons like that. Elemental stuff also kinda suffers from this, but at least there's a bit more feedback like "Plant/Covered in oil things no like fire!" Or "It flipped out when i set it on fire", or electricty in water = good.
it at least encourages swapping way more than the older games since you can hot swap infusions at bonfires instead of having to permanently invest a weapon down one elemental upgrade path
So apparently fire makes hand enemies really easy to deal with. And crystal darts confuse imps into attacking their buddies.
I think I need to make some pots next time I play.
Hands and giant plant enemies (the Miranda flowers) will flip out when set alight. Landsquirts (The werid barnacle fruit things) will explode if you poison them or cause them to Rot. Theres' a few enemies like that that have freak out animations, though i hadnt heard about the crystal dart one
Edit: Googling indicates Crystal Darts apply a frenzy effect to all enemies, it just takes a little why to build up.

There is that - but i still think you could get 99% of that if you simplified down to one, maybe two physical damage types and the elemental types. And, you know, clearer feedback on what works vs what doesnt.

If a weapon is like "standard/strike"... how much is coming from each? Is strike a variant of standard?
Usually when it is something like that, a mix of two different PHY weapon damage, it means that certain animations do X and certain do Y. i.e. a Katana can do stab damage with the 1H R2 button, but most everything else is slash.

Last night I was fighting the Rune Bear in that tiny cave in dragonbarrow and after hugging me, when it reared up for follow-up attack, it fell through the floor.
Took what felt like a long time for it to die too. I thought it'd fallen to a lower level and was just lurking in the boss room or something as as bonus rune bear in a place I really didn't want to encounter one.
But I guess it just takes a while to reach the center of the earth.

Last night I wrecked Malenia by spamming the Blasphemous Blade's weapon art. 2200 a hit. She melted like butter in phase one, then spent all of phase 2 trying to kill my mimic while I unloaded frost pots at her and then finished her off with more Taker's Flames. It was hilarious, every second or third hit would knock her down, and between me and the mimic she spent like a third of the fight tanking the floor.

I read somewhere that if you are endlessly falling the game will automatically kill you after 12 seconds. Maybe it applies to enemies as well?

okay newly upgraded summons, it's your time to shine
Do you have D's armor?

...since when has it been pierce
It depends on the moveset, e.g. a common thing is for swords to usually do standard damage but do pierce on their thrust attacks.
I do!
