my thing has always been weapon in one hand and staff/seal in the other, lately the weapon has been Frozen Needle +10.
heavy attack does an ice stab but if you hold it, you shoot an icicle, which is good for catching guys a little out of your range, and it obviously builds up frostbite.
combine that with the Glintstone Icecrag sorcery and you got a recipe for revenge, served cold.
I'm almost done Rennala on my NG+ so I'm gonna respec to faith and do dragon and/or beast stuff
Oh dang, finally got Malenia down. I tried so many builds, a faith double-greatsword one and at least one moment of zen-like rolling finally made it happen.
Now to go grab the last few whatevers I missed, then the last dungeon.

that miquella/st trina is a parallel to radagon/marika
damn i'm dense
There's a lot of focus on duality and people who are multiple people in some way in the game.
Look at stuff like Blaidd and Malekith, people who are also the animate shadows of others. Both Morgott and Mohg have a version of themselves that you encounter before you hit the real deal. D is two people who share the same soul. And then once you have all those, stuff like Ranni/Renna or Godfrey/Hoarah Loux starts feeling more significant.
Edit: I forget Millicent and her sisters and Malenia, like a dumbass. They're one of the biggest ones honestly.
I don't have like, a lore theory or anything to explain these and tie them together, but I do think there's a lot of thematic resonance going on there.
there's that really annoying invader in Caelid in the middle of the rot swamp. Not only are those knights walking around but she also knocks you off your horse and leaves you knee deep is rot juice.
Anyway, she keeps doing that flurry attack that a certain other boss does but the thing is, she's not a boss and not wearing much armor so while impressive looking i can just poke her in the eye with a stick while she's in the air and that completely knocks her on her ass every single time.
ending, felt a bit weird about it until I looked up what it means and apparently there were gaps between the implications of the original Japanese script and what the English translation says.
It sounds like Ranni's order will be invisible (in contrast to the Golden Order), it sounded like the dark moon would remove light from the world which was a bit iffy. And the loneliness she mentions is people not feeling the direct impact of the gods like they did before. So basically, going from Holy Authoritarianism to Spooky Moon Deism. I can live with that

I don't really buy the translation errors thing
Or rather, the fan translation and the translation in the game feel like they're saying the exact same thing to me
After about two hours of trying (an hour yesterday and an hour today) I beat Malenia! A lot of bosses in this game were kind of a cakewalk as a mage with Moonveil. I thought Malenia might be as well when I got her down to about 1/4 HP left on my second attempt (Tiche actually got her down to about 10% while the death animation played out), but then I face planted for the next 30-40 attempts.
Or rather, the fan translation and the translation in the game feel like they're saying the exact same thing to me
the other big part is if you catch the extra dialog with mini ranni at some point, where she kind of explains her game plan better than the ending does
Question about a mechanic I probably haven't discovered yet: Since very early on in the game I have found statues of hooded figures holding a lantern. Activating these statues will produce a beam of light away from them, towards the ground somewhere. They always seem to just end somewhere in the ground - do I need to scout the area and find an underground passage that it is pointing towards? Or is this something I can progress later in the game? I'm in the snowy mountains right now, just after meeting Shabriri.

They point to a catacomb entrance, but they always point in a direct line, even through walls, floors, etc.
So, sometimes you gotta do a lot of exploring to figure out where the beam is going, because you have to travel a much more circuitous route.

They always point pretty much directly at the entrance to a nearby dungeon. If you can activate them and turn that light on, you have not found and completed said dungeon yet.

Also after activating them you can see a blue line on your map, pointing the direction the same way that grace does, so you can just check your map instead of going back to the statue. The line will disappear after completing the catacomb
Did i mention how much I love how the entrance to the capital is designed?
If you come in from the bottom there's a gauntlet of archers shooting at you and two tree guards at the gate, it's possible to go on the side of the stairs but each side has a surprise attack from a Rune Bear and a Meteor Beast, right after all that you get to a grace and just above you're attacked by a gargoyle.
Or you can just come in from the north and avoid all that.

I'm finding out that people apparently put their horse summon ring in the potion pouch along with their flasks.
This is madness to me. I have him on RB+left. I've already got two flasks, a physic, and my lantern on there, I'm supposed to add another?! I feel like I should even put my lantern on one of those slots you only see from the pause menu, I can't imagine putting yet another item to scroll through on there.

Better way to do things:
Put your horse on rb/y/whatever + up. One flask on right, one flask on left, physic on down.
Bam, never have to scroll when you need a heal again

I dunno if it's too modernized for Souls series purists but I loved the extra menu for items and would have appreciated them expanding it into a Monster Hunter-esque radial menu.
Fumbling through the souls item bar in the middle of combat is simulationist, actually. It accurately conveys the experience of fishing around in your underwear trying to find the right object you've stored there, among the potions, knives, explosives and literal wads of fecal matter. While being chased by a dog.

Giving up having access to actual combat items just hurts too much - Kurkis are so good, for instance if you're remtoely going into dex/str, they hit like trucks
Look, I need to have my telescope (up) and lantern (left) instantly to hand at all times. And then it just makes sense for Torrent (down) and goat-horse treats (right) in the other pouch slots... It's positional!
I do tap through for other options in the item hotbars, but holding whatever on the d-pad jumps back to the first slot, so heal potions are still pretty accessible...
Is it after you complete the catacomb, or just after you find and open it?
The blue guide line disappears when you reach the entry of the dungeon, nothing to do with activating the grace or completing the area. (It can lead to a cave, catacomb or Hero's Grave.)

I never need to turn my lantern on quickly - that goes in one of the pouches that isn't y-accessible so it's still easy to find. Y-accessible slots are for Torrent and whatever other summons I'm playing with at a given point.
And I think I only ever put non-potion items in my potion slot a handful of times, with specific things like the binding shackles. I simply hate using consumables, and while a hard game should make me more prone to do so it actually works the other way around because I assume I could die at any moment and have it be a waste.
haha watching my friend play for the first time last night, she died to patches guardbreaking and criting her 4 times so she just murdered the fuck out of him when she finally got him to yield. A valid choice.

I definitely think my opinion of Patches might have been a bit different if I had found that fight earlier in the game and not gotten it on the first go

Rob Zacny at Waypoint was talking about how his wife is playing Elden Ring, which she was hesitant about because she has bad controller coordination, but she went with a purely magic build and is absolutely steamrolling the game. She took out Margit on the first try. He's agonizing over his build and she's like "haha what? Magic go brrrrrrr" and she's way ahead of him now
