I imagine if Hos says no, the Nats take Myers and/or kick in some cash and the Padres just DFA him. I can’t imagine the fan reception he’d get during his first at-bat after refusing the trade.
The return of Operation Shutdown would be too good to be true. Especially if connected in even the tiniest way to another MLB player named Bell (even though Josh Bell is not related to the legendary Derek Bell in any way to the best of my knowledge).
It was Derek Bell's response to being made to compete for a starting role for the first time in many years as an MLB player.
"Ask Littlefield and ask Mac if I'm in competition. If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is [a competition], then I'm going into 'Operation Shutdown,'" Bell told Dvorchak when he first heard about the competition. It earned an incredulous laugh from Rapp.
"Tell them exactly what I said. I haven't competed for a job since 1991," Bell went on. "If I don't [start], then I guess I'll be out of here."
...
In the end, Bell gave Littlefield the cover he needed to move on from Bonifay's misfire. Even before he initiated Operation Shutdown, Dvorchak says the Pirates GM wanted to figure out a way "to eat the second-year salary on Bell's contract. The comments made it a lot easier for him to cut the cord."
Not two weeks later, Bell was gone. The Operation that began with a bang ended with a whimper, and Bell was released and quietly walked out of the clubhouse. He didn't have much to say on his way out: "Just tell them I got in my yacht and rode out into the sunset."
Padres fault for not clearing this with Hosmer prior to offer, honestly. Hosmer deserves none of the shit that is coming his way.
Between the Padres fans who hate him for not wanting to throw his career away on a dead end team and the Nationals fans who hate him for completely agreeing with them about the state of their team, everything is extremely dumb

Padres fans hated Eric Hosmer way before this deal was even being speculated on because he’s a huge dickhead and one of the worst contracts on any MLB team.
I wasn't sure how i felt about the Soto the cards early rumors. Mostly because I was skeptical that the cards would be able to re-sign Soto in a couple years and at that point had given away a huge chunk of the team for not much return.
The difference between a loud Cardinals fan and a loud Yankees fan is that loud Yankees fans know that they're assholes and revel in it. Astros fans have followed this path. The "best fans in baseball!" bit has largely been shamed out of Cardinals fans, but that stink remains, you know?
I don't care about Cardinals fans, really. I've seen enough "pujols mows my lawn" shirts outside of Wrigley Field that I'm never going to attempt to claim the moral high ground. I will however, always hate the Cardinals, because it's my right as a sports fan to irrationally hate a storied rival and make fun of them whenever possible, for whatever petty reason I can find.
Just a note that Tatis took his first batting practice and supposed to start rehab assignment in minors this weekend. Most likely 2-3 weeks before back in a stacked lineup.

I don’t REALLY think they suck. Like any major sports team they have shitty fans and they have good fans.
They just have really loud shitty fans and it seems their good fans are mostly too quiet.

Say Padres will cover some of his salary to get rid of him.
