Girl Genius felt distinctive horny, Phil Foglio magic cards felt distinctive silly, and since the former never captured me I never made the connection. The XXXenophile thing... also tracks.

while this is true, I've also always felt that Conch Horn is very distinctly the same style

It's funny cause my initial exposure to Phil Foglio's art was him doing a comic adaptation of Another Fine Myth.
Mine was the larger paperback versions of those books that had a handful of his illustrations in. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I went looking those up I found out he made a whole comic of it.
My affection for the foglios might be misplaced; I met two artists I really looked up to at sdcc in 2007, phil foglio signed my copies of xxxholic and I said I loved his mtg work and he said hey thanks glad someone remembers me🙂. To doug tennapel I said “hey thanks for earthworm jim and the neverhood” and he called me a long haired faggot, so.

I'm going to visit some friends soon. That friend recently got really into Magic: The Gathering, but plays Commander mode.
I've only really played in, uh, like, standard constructed mode. When I last heavily collected cards, Arabian Nights was considered the hot shit. I've routinely bought random foil packs and preconstructed decks since, just for funsies and to keep my hand in.
So, how do I get smart on Commander mode and what's a good way to get a couple premade decks for it?

Commander is the biggest format in magic now so any board game store, most comic stores, and I think almost all big box stores should have a selection of commander decks you can pick up.
You'll be fine with any of the precons as long as nobody else is playing a crazy powerful deck.
For learning about the format you're probably fine just searching for casual/intro commander videos on youtube and any of those hits should give you a decent introduction

You can google search for commander archetypes pretty easily. Most prefabs come with some of the basics needed (i.e. commanders tower, arcane signet, sol ring, etc.). You wanna make sure you strike a balance between threats, removal, and mana rocks. Don't worry too much about making an amazing deck, it's a mode best played multiplayer and not painting a target on your back is always important.
I'd just netdeck a deck based on a commander you particularly like and then proxy everything.

I was in a very similar position at this time last year. The thread recommended the Elven Empire preconstructed Commander deck and I ended up picking it up. It was a good rec - it was pretty easy to get into and playable enough that I had a good time with it. I started swapping in some old cards of mine that were useful for it, then started buying a few singles and then got fully back into Magic and picked up a couple more precons and souped them up a bit before getting into brewing my own decks.

Maybe you could also ask your bud if he has a fully custom deck, or if he's sticking to premade ones (ask who his Commanders are either way). At least you have an idea how busted his stuff will be?
Yeah, the commander precons are all pretty solid these days. My favorite of the ones in the last year is probably Obscura Operation but there's almost zero chance of finding that one at any normal price (lol Smuggler's Share).
Honestly, all of the Baldur's Gate decks that just came are pretty fun with different playstyles while not being bonkers powerful. Mindflayarrrrs was fun to see in play and I like how Draconic Dissent encourages beat down games.
"Go down, kick ass, and set yourselves up as gods, that's our Prime Directive!"
If you want to see some of the recent pre-con decks in action, this video (from the nice folks at Loading Ready Run) is a nice casual game, and is not a bad introduction to the format and how it flows:
The pre-cons generally come in two varieties: The $20 ones, which are generally less "powerful" in terms of cards included and are supplemental to a limited set, and the $40 ones, which tend to have more "powerful" cards and more new cards. Although prices do tend to fluctuate depending on demand in the months after release (I think you can get a couple of the Stryxhaven $40 pre-cons for about $30 these days, for example).
The new capenna commander precons had a price hike over the standard $40-45 range. I think they run 50 apiece. Price hike was for general cost increases and they included a 2 card bonus pack inside.

Nah, anywhere charging $50 was hiking more than the increase on em.

Haven't been able to keep up with (nor enjoy) the flood of sets for a while, this was a nice surprise to see honestly.
Really, the set's just gorgeous across the board. I question whether the price point is actually a good idea on it (as a maximization problem) though.

I can't believe they got Foglio back for that card but not for Ghost of Ramirez DePietro.
How is this news?

All of those decks came out within the last month or so, so if any of them look interesting, then they shouldn't (hopefully) be too hard to find.
Personally I got the vehicle one for Kamigawa and I still run it stock for now, but I’ve been eyeing a few cards to stick into it.
I was literally going to post this and @ you specifically. Out hasted again!
holy crap this friggin art
