Yeah, Tree Spirit is one that i felt was just Way. Too. Much. Especially because he's in my list of "would have been cool as a surprise, motherfuckers!" boss. A little seasoning goes a long way

On a different note, whooboy - Really noticing those Colossal buffs. It's pretty hilarious just how hard i can demolish things - plenty of mook class enemies are getting one shot, which is great for feeling very STRONK.

Still think strength should increase carry weight, but w/e

As a "fuck you player" which they love to do, I basically think its the perfect enemy. I know this attitude of theirs is unpopular, but I appreciate you From. Keep on trollin.

I spent like two hours last night finishing the Great Jar Duels and friends, they are broken as fuck.

First, there is now a forcefield that bars you from getting to the cliffside / branch exploits which used to have the invaders just leap to their death.

Two, there is a single branch still available. You get on that and the invader just circles back and forth. They won't engage.

Three, you can't cheese them with ranged attacks as they roll back and forth.

And fourth, the online builds are insane. Everyone has all the classic OP builds. And, to me, they behave as if they have infinite endurance.

A +15 great shield can't block a full combo. My +8 colossal sword made up of other swords does like four hundred damage as attack and judging by that, these guys easily have five thousand hitpoints.

I finally beat it with the suggestion to go offline to fight the stock invaders. They still behave the same way, but don't have the builds at least.

I am in the business of saving lives.

Did they fix invading AI players being utter bunnies to jump attacks? Those invaders were a real challenge until I read about jump attacks vs them in this thread, whereupon I turned every invader in the game afterwards into a bunny via jumping.

Interestingly there's 7 Ulcerated Tree spirits which is 1 more than half a dozen.

edit: I seem to remember 1 more than listed here, so 2 more than half a dozen. Guess it doesn't list them all.

It doesn't. There's 3 in Capitol of Ash, 1 southwest in Altus/capitol outskirts, probably a few more. There's a ton of 'em.

I found at least 12 of them, so there's more then "half a dozen"
    1 Fringefolk hero tomb
    1 Stormveil castle
1 Caleid in a dead hero tomb
    1 Leyndell, just chilling
1 Near the Minor Erdtree in Mt Gelmir
1 in a catacombs in Mt. Gelmir
1 Having a shower at the end of the Lake of rot, under a waterfall
1 Taking a bath in the Jacuzzi of Rot under the Haligtree
1 in the catacombs in the Mountain of Giants

I wasn't aware of sorting your inventory that way, so that's good to know. However, it's easy to forget what category everything is when you get a couple dozen items between checks. A little glowing outline or something for unchecked items would be nice is all I'm saying. It's not a huge issue, one way or the other.

Anyway, Day 7 of my stupid meanderings.
I finished up the Soifa (sp/) river area today, grabbing the other half or so of the cairns I needed to light up and fighting land octopi, poison/laser flowers, more ghost minotaurs, packs of rats, and more! And by fight I mean "get killed by at least a couple of times." But still, the lights are lit and the path is clear to the Hornhallowed Ground.
This is probably my favorite boss in the game so far. Just looks so cool, tons of impressive attacks, probably important lore-wise as Torrent's great grandparent of some sort, and it takes place in a really pretty battlefield. My summon ashes are pretty useless in the battle, though. The fight itself was reminiscent of Sif and the like, but after the developers figured out the obvious tricks to that sort of fight. Oh, trying to sneak under or behind the big quadrupedal boss, huh? I guess you forgot about the FIRE! Or it bucking the area behind it. Or just body slamming on top of you.
Fortunately, my endurance is high enough that I could stamina tank its multi-jumping dive attacks and counter back, so I'm able to finish the critter off in relatively short notice, getting a new summon, a couple of levels, and a trophchievement for my troubles. I found the exit elevator a little later and ended up in Overlevel Land again, or "Caiden" as I think it's called. I managed to kill a few enemies before bailing, but some odd balance issues there. Why was one giant with exploding arrows 8K runes, but an even harder giant with exploding arrows AND lava breath only like 1K? Weird.
Anyway, I still didn't finish the Mirkwood area, so I teleported back and found the church that lets me make poorly-spelled elixirs. I traveled North from there, dying only occasionally from stupid falls, and took out a few of the Turbobears on the way, once with the help of an entire pack of wolves!
With Lindgrave mostly dealt with for now, I went back to the South. Sadly, when I went back to Irina to continue her Letter to Dad subquest, she was already killed somehow. My fault for faffing about in Stormveil for so long? Hard to say. Either way, I avenged her by killing all the monsters in the nearby caravan massacre site. Except for the resting troll. Poor thing was just a beast of burden to these people. It didn't want to attack me, so I left it alone to finish its break.
I started the hilariously named Morne Castle, which I appear to be pretty overleveled for, as my summon ash buddy and I tore through the entire first half or so. Then I had to do the beam balance thing to get to a floor and was immediately torn apart by rats, so I decided this was a good time to call it for the evening.
Oh, one last thing I did. I ran into some noble twit named Haight or something? He asked me to clear out his fort for him, and I did that hours ago, so it was an easy job for me. He offered to knight me, but I haven't decided if I was going to head over there and take him up on the offer yet. I appreciate his policy of diplomacy with the Demihumans, though. Not sure how he's going to pull that one off.

Day 8 of Seth's Excellent Adventure
I wrapped up Morne Castle to start with. I was definitely overleveled as I thought, but this is still a From Software game, so it was easy to get careless. I ended up dying to the larger beastpeople and their 3 hit heavy attack combo more often than I'd like to admit. Cost me about 6,000 runes, which isn't enough to level at this point, but still.
I beat the boss and then recouped some of my runes (and sated my bloodlust) by re-exploring the place and killing the enemies over again.
With the Castle cleared, I left to clear out the rest of the Weeping Peninsula, starting with getting an actual map! I found a poison swamp near the castle, but nothing really worth finding. Next, there's a barrier asking me to seek three "wise beasts," which may or may not be animals with a weird blue glow. I'm not sure what wisdom they offer, but killing them releases some magical stuff? Either way, I only found two so far, but I did find a short catacomb dungeon with the golem cat boss again, but this time it brought friends. I moved on to find a church full of gross infected rats and villagers and some churches, then fought a Tree Avatar monster. It wasn't too bad, though as always have an ash pet to distract helped a lot.
I found another teleport trap chest! It was at a ruined tower (appropriately called the Tower of Return or something like that,) just southwest of the Eldertree. There was a weird bell tolling throughout the area. Not sure if the tower was the cause of that or not yet. It took me to a way more advanced place, but I couldn't get very far because the giant kicked my ass repeatedly. At least I found a Grace, so I could teleport there again if desired.
Sadly, I think I might have let another story wait too long before I advanced it. I learned that the weird voice I heard near the Gate ruins was apparently a talking tree, or a guy turned into a tree or something. I went back to find him, but he had since left. Not sure if I'll find him in non-tree state in the future or not.
I ended the day at the Round Table, chatting with some of the people there. Their leader is willing to dish about all the main bosses now that I killed one of them, but it was getting late and I was tired of exposition, so I'll wrap that up next session.

Out of curiosity, what's everyone's policy about upgrading weapons? I got my main, a Knight's Greatsword, up to a +6. I always feel bad using consumable material like that, but I haven't found a better weapon my stats can handle at this stage of the game.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

So... This is for me personal:

I've found weapons requiring somber smithing stones easier to upgrade, as you need way less of them.

Of the normal weapons, I have 2 at max: a shield and my incantation... fetish? thingie? And I have a a few tester ones at like level +18.
My bow and main weapon are somber and maxed, and I have 3 other sombers maxed.

This is near end-game, and while I think there are 12 ancient dragon smithing stones per run, allowing you to maximumal upgrade 12 times.
I think it's "realistic" to have about 2 normals at max, 4 sombers at max.

I personally think they could've been more generous with the stones, and especially with normal smithing stones, they should've drastically brought the amount you need down: I have been able to experiment with weapons, but it's pretty tight.

You do find bells that allow unlimited upgrades, but when you find them, they allow for upgrades to about the power of the zone you just left, leaving you with the ability to make a bunch of subpar weapons, that don't quite cut it for current content.

So, do experiment, but be warned: having the correct weapon level is your biggest damage upgrade AND you are a bit limited in having them at the right level.
So, test if you like a weapon by going back to old zones, and see if it feels alright, don't invest too much in a weapon you're unsure of.

As a caster, the only way I was able to beat it was to abuse how the AI mishandles spells that are casted immediately, but delay in attacking. So basically, it was "keep casting Glintstone Blade to induce premature rolls" and run. Throw in some Rock Sling here and there too. It was a slow process. I’m probably gonna try out St Trina’s sword when I get to them. Sleep is not something I’ve had a chance to try but I’ve heard it is very good.

Also I think that list of tree spirits only includes boss bar ones which seems fair. The others are just “haha gotchas for trying to get that item” and avoidable

I was helping folks through Castle Morne on my latest character and someone on PlayStation has a pvp smurf named Morne Nightmare. He invades just to stop people from beating the Castle, wielding two copies of a sword you can only get once a playthrough in Caelid.

He dual wields the St Trina's, once he starts hitting you there's no window to dodge out. With 1 combo you're asleep and near death and then he kills you.

is there more to the ruins gs than the weapon art. is the moveset any different

i'm second guessing if it's worth going int since i'm cooling on appeal of the ruins and beast jaw arts, which kinda just leaves royal and starscourge

Ruins' charge attack is unique, and the weapon art is very good, but it is "just" a good great sword. It won't rock your world, necessarily.

Starscourge is pretty cool - the weapon art is fun, but maybe not as useful overall as Ruins, but the follow up option is fun, and it's better for builds that want more int obviously.

I kinda like the Royal Greatsword, but the weapon art is less useful generally speaking - Ruins is ranged, so just overall better. Royal is a jump towards the enemy, and then an explosion - which can be nice, and it does good damage when both parts hit (but, like, combined they're still not top of the line). It's less useful versus groups than the other two, but against small/medium enemies it will probably be better (strong knock down), though Starscourge also staggers pretty well. But, againt, Ruins has range - and it can be spammed pretty well, and can also stagger quite well.

my problem with the ruins GS art is that it seems too good

    good range, crazy damage

which is great from a content clearing perspective but i'd prefer something more interactive or situational. same with jaw, i saw a fextralife video on the weapon and it was just spamming the art on it, which eh.

i guess it does an AoE on charged R2s, which might work for me. i can always switch up with an infused Greatsword or whatever

An infused weapon with Lion's Claw can honestly also get you pretty close to the Royal Greatsword. It won't have the secondary explosion, but it's more spammable if you want that.

Starscourge with its weapon art gravity pull -> optional follow up slam is a bit more unique, and also really solid / works well for both single targets and groups.

The roll R1 is a poke, the charged R2 does AOE secondary hits FP free, the guard counter on both the blade and with a shield is stupid fast. It's a really solid weapon, held back slightly by its reach.

Which is why I have 40 phys res and 35 non-phys res, so I can maintain being in their stupid faces.

Also, I'm tickled to find that the
    "helmet"
you get from Alexander is one of the best in the game. God bless you, jar man.

I thought I was gonna go str/int but then I found ice spear.

I’m a little sad 1-h axes aren’t great. I really wanted to make an “axe n board” guard counter with a magic or ice affinity highland axe and some spells, but axes just seem kinda… meh. Like, worse versions of straight swords. It would explain why no one used them. I could probably go great axes but I don’t want to invest that much into strength if I’m going to take advantage of spells as well.

    Loathsome fucker.

And this is why I have some strong opinions on most people who play PVP in this game.

Re ranged attacks and NPC invaders, use Night Comet. They don't see it so all they can do is ineffectually dodge at random. (I have not tried it with a real player, because refer to the first sentence.)

I never played the other DS games as early from launch as this one (had a few run-ins, but they all seemed pretty close to what I could have done had I leveled differently), but are these clear cases of twinking with gear beyond what they should be able to get normal?

I've had about 4 pvp encounters, including one time when I invaded for that one quest (other times they started the boss fight before I could get there) and I think only once did the person I was squared off with had a loadout that wasn't post-Golden City and/or NG+ when this was going on in Liurnia and Caelid (and I think the last one had something off too, but it was something you could have dashed through Altus Plateau to pick up, and it was actually a pretty fun duel despite losing, so no ill will to them for that)
