    Ally McBeal Update:

The third season begins with Ally entering her office dripping wet and recounting how moments prior she FUCKED an absolute stranger in the middle of a car-wash.

Later on John Cage reveals to Ally that while on a business trip their coworker (and his girlfriend), Nelle, propositioned him for phone-sex and he simply couldn't do it. And now he's feeling impotent as he can't summon the power/influence of Barry White. But after an inspirational talk from Elaine, done while she engages in heavy-petting with him, he recaptures his sexual energy. Skip ahead to the end of the episode and John Cage prepares to make love to Nelle, until... Until he starts to only see her as Barry White. But John Cage is a soldier, so he pushes forward and makes out with his girlfriend who he mentally envisions as Barry White.

Also, in one week Ally McBeal saves a women's upcoming marriage and then at her wedding absolutely destroys it. She's a being of chaos and madness.

Really bold of Neelix to assume there’s literally any other person onboard who would be willing to donate a lung to him.

I think I would find Ally McBeal unbearable to watch just from how often the laws of the universe seem to bend to support the central character's narcissism. (See also about 1 in 5 episodes of HIMYM.)

I mean, its a comedic world, it needs to bend so it doesn't break under the absurdism of its characters/narratives.

But the show does still have snippets in which the characters are punished for their actions.

In the episode from above, Ally McBeal ruins the wedding and every character at the wedding screams/yells/boos her as a result. Near the end of the episode when she is leaving the event she's heckled by strangers.

I don't know what I think of Outer Range yet, but it's definitely a show that benefits from having two episodes dropped at once for the premier. The first episode was pretty inscrutable and it ended surprisingly and kind of confusingly.

The second episode only peeled back the layers a little bit, but just enough to start to get interesting. I'm a little concerned it's just an endless mystery box, but the final scene in episode 2 gave me some hope that there's a plan here.

    Fairly minor spoiler:
I liked how both episodes basically end with almost the exact same shot, but recontextualized.

Also, really good music choice for the cut to the credits at the end of the second episode. Not quite on the level of "Oh Bondage! Up Yours!" from that episode of The Handmaid's Tale, but still very fitting.

I hearby vote that we use the Brolin scale for all male performances in television, on the grounds that it is excellent.

Did the new season of Barry start already? Turns out I missed the premiere of Better Call Saul last night. Really need to rewatch the last seasons of both those shows.

    Now to find the time.

Is all of Season 2 of Russian Doll dropping tomorrow, or is it like an episode a week?

I feel like I need to re-watch Season 1 first.

Account sharing that we created. By making the system that encourages it. But now complain about.

I do fully expect Disney, Amazon, etc, to pull the same whines about account sharing soon enough though. Disney slowed down a LOT and their customer surveys reflect that they're thinking about it.

Streaming's golden age is over. Now is the time for everyone to nickel and dime.

    Nothing. Matters.

    The old platforms are dying.

Now is the age of Tubi & Pluto TV

    Probably.

As much as everyone complains about ad supported viewing, they will fall all over themselves to watch Youtube, Tubi and Pluto. Sure, some are savvy enough to block ads, but most (>95%) aren't.

Speaking of being savvy to block ads

AMC was just looping ads at me trying to watch better call Saul at the first break and wouldn't continue the episode

I don't mind ad supported viewing but somehow in the streaming space I do mind paying for a service and then seeing ads too. I realize that's exactly how cable worked, but I didn't like how cable worked, that's why I tried to get away from it!

That has nothing to do with Netflix, it's just me griping about tiered options and how shit's getting expensive.

I wouldn’t even mind ads on most streaming services if they didn’t constantly place them in the wrong fucking spots on older shows, Paramount Plus.

Streaming being gatekept by subscriptions has been interesting because I can't tell if it's been an acknowledgement that the advertising model is untenable or if it's just an outgrowth of the rental model is spawned from.

Like we're just going to end up back at tradition broadcasting but on demand right? Making everything openly streamable with ads and then charging advertisers based on the popularity of those shows.

Man, Tubi's advertisment timing is impeccable.

Only happens about three times during a movie. Gives you a countdown timer before it happens to let ya know

That’s awesome. Paramount is routinely like 10 seconds early or late compared to the show’s act outs, so you either got it just before the big final moment of a scene, or you got it a few seconds after the fade-out/fade-in from the inbuilt breaks.

Hold on, Netflix already limits the amount of simultaneous viewers on one account. The different tiers of plan specifically lidt their differing limits.

Do they really need more limits on password sharing than that?

This is not about solving a real problem. This is about the need for exponential constant growth strangling a company.

Just to head the story off at the pass.

    https://techcrunch.com/2022/04/19/netflix-to-introduce-ad-supporter-plan/
Netflix plans to offer a cheaper and ad-supported plan to consumers within a year or two, the world’s largest streaming service said, as it pushes to tap a wider set of potential customers.

The firm, which reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter, will introduce the ad-supported plan to give customers more choice, company’s co-chief executive Reed Hastings said at the earnings call Tuesday.

The upcoming ad-supported plan, marks a major shift in how Netflix has previously viewed advertisement in its 25-year history. Hastings acknowledged the major move, saying the model has matured enough and proven successful for rivals such as Hulu.

“Those who have followed Netflix know that I have been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription,” he said. “But I am a bigger fan of consumer choice. Allowing consumers who would like to have lower price and are advertising tolerant get what they want they want makes a lot of sense.”

Netflix, which reported its first subscriber loss in more than a decade, is not viewing an ad-supported model as a “short-term fix,” Hastings said.
