It’s the same as Reaper in that it’s the last thing you want to do but also absolutely necessary to keep everything else flowing.

picto has some nuance in that you always want to enter a burst phase with wing/fang motif,a hammer motif, and a comet up

That's the most obvious point of contrast that I can think of, where you want you keep your basic combo running at absolutely all times. Meanwhile, at a glance the Pictomancer's basic combo seems like something you should only do if you have absolutely nothing better to do with your time instead?

I don't think Pictomancer's combo is any different to any other job. Every 123 combo in the game is something you only do between all of your other attacks.

Eh, MNK will want to do them to build up resources and maintain buffs. WAR needs to do them every 30 secs to maintain their dmg buff. I think there are other jobs with similar requirements as well.

    PCT’s 123 also builds resources.

It's more noticeable on PCT because of how its rotation is more priority based. You fall back on 123 when you don't have any higher damage buttons ready rather than on any kind of fixed pattern or anything.

The way MNK's combo works makes it a lot more involved than mindless filler buttons (plus how it's used for Perfect Balance combos). I feel like NIN probably makes the least use of their basic combo with how much other stuff they're spending GCDs on? Them or PLD (who basically does one very long combo in between Requeiscats)

There are basically two types of melee DPS —

Monk/Samurai: your 1-2-3 and permutations thereof is your rotation.

Viper/Reaper/Ninja: your 1-2-3 is what you press when you have nothing else to do.

(Dragoon is kind of a hybrid where your 1-2-3 is a bit more interesting than the filler classes but the rest of your rotation is just in oGCDs. You could argue that rather than being a “hybrid” it is “poorly designed.”)

Pictomancer is the caster version of Viper/Reaper/Ninja.

  • admanbadmanb unionize your workplace Seattle, WARegistered User regular
Monk and Samurai are the outliers, especially as all the tanks are Viper/Reaper/Ninja types.

PLD's clearly closer to DRG. PCT is the caster equivalent of MCH, not any of the melees imo.

My group of FFXIV hard-content newbs (plus me) have been blind progging Another Sil’dahn and just cleared the second boss after a very clean set of pulls (we saw the final mechanic last prog night but didn’t solve it until the very end.)

Then we hit the last boss and chain wiped to the first mechanic for 40 minutes. The few times we dragged our corpses into the second mechanic we managed to see 27 different things happen before we all took two million damage.

looking forward to getting back in there!

The last boss of another sil'dihn is great fun once you get into the groove. It does make the mean choice of putting the by far hardest mechanic late in the fight, but you can fairly easily cheese it.

The effects of this action will now be applied earlier.
No longer reduces HP to 1, and instead reduces HP to 50% of maximum.

Is superbolide even really superbolide if it doesn't make your healer shit their pants?

Whenever I take a long break I just buy a few of the crafted accessories to catch up.

  • GridlinkGridlink Registered User regular
Maybe close to a month ago prices on the crafted 710 gear plummeted, and I was able to get the whole set for around 200K by visiting whatever server had the lowest price. I've honestly have barely played since I finished the MSQ in July (felt very burned out on the game), still haven't done any of the post-MSQ dungeons, so I knew I'd need gear to do the 7.1+ stuff when it came out.

Being able to store an entire glamour outfit as one item is a fantastic QoL change.

HQ versions of glamour items not counting as the item required for the outfit is much less fantastic.

Seems like an oversight I hope gets patched.

edit- Oh I just remembered you can lower the quality of items. A feature I have never once used or even thought about until now.

Not being able to mix and match NQ and HQ glamour items is still dumb though.

I wonder what insane tech debt problem led to that restriction

So the Glamour Outfit Set can only be all HQ or all NQ. Now as I said previously you can lower the quality of items and these are all just Glamour gear, so at the end of the day this isn't an issue.

But man it is weird. The sets have to be either all HQ or NQ. My assumption was that this was just one of those silly oversights. The kind of things people never consider until the plan goes from paper to practice. But maybe it is a weird tech debt issue.

Luckily, as I said, this has turned out not to be a problem. It's just odd.

when you store it as one item can you still use individual parts of the set?

edit nevermind that was easier to google than I thought, yes you can

feature still doesn't really look that useful - it effectively turns the items into armoire items which means no pre-dyeing them, which rules out a huge chunk of my current glamour dresser contents that are already pre-dyed with pure white or jet black.

if it wasn't for modding I would probably have the patience to go through and sort out the dresser in this way but I played around with it a little bit and my god it is so much clicking and messing around, and you have to have the full set otherwise it doesn't work at all

It is real nice for turning, typically, 5 items in to 1 in terms of Glamour Dresser storage. I have so far reclaimed about 100 Glamour Dresser slots and could actually reclaim much more if I completed some set collections. Losing the pre-dye is a bit of a bummer, but on the bright side whatever dyes you have set to the Glamour Plate will remain.

Anything that can be put into the armoire I'd just leave there.

edit- They have said they will be expanding the Outfit system later so I imagine dungeon sets and the like will one day be available for Outfitification.

yeah when I said armoire I meant that the items then effectively couldn't be dyed like armoire ones can't

keeping the dyes on the plate is fine and good but in the days before plugins I'd be rotating out glamour plates constantly, even with 20 of them. in the Glamourer plugin I have almost 300 saved outfits.

it's a feature that's better to have than not, I just don't quite understand why There isn't a bit more thought put into making it a bit easier to work with. like why do I have to take the items out first, why can't I just right click on a set and go "convert to outfit". and why do I have to have the set completed? I don't think I have a single full set of anything in my entire glamour dresser because you limited space in the dresser itself by definition means that I've already gone through and eliminated parts of sets that I wasn't necessarily using. why can't I just load in the items I have from an outfit and then go back and add more later if I go get the missing pieces

The whole point of the feature is to reduce the amount of data spent storing the items.
An individual item is stored with item ID, dye 1, dye 2, and quality. Spiritbond, condition, and crafter name are stripped off when they're stored so can ignore those.
A set can be stored with just the ID. That's why they can afford to treat a 5-item set as just 1 item against your storage limit, because it takes up less space than a single item.
If they had to store any information about each individual part of the set then sets wouldn't be a saving at all and we just wouldn't have the feature.
You have to take the pieces out of the dresser to form the set anyway, so it's no real hassle to also squash any HQ pieces down.

yeah I think this system came about because they can't redo their glamour dresser database structure that they are running into problems with expanding due to spaghetti code debt, but they can make new item IDs that correspond to having a full set of items to compress how much space that pile of item IDs takes up in the database to 1 ID.

If they want to save more data then get rid of HQ Galmour items being a thing.

I wish I knew why FFXIV runs like ASS in Fullscreen Windowed.

Windowed? Buttery smooth. Fullscreen? Buttery smooth. Windowed Fullscreen? Time to chug down to like ~30fps.

so for whatever reason, sometimes the game gets stuck thinking it's the background application when in that mode and goes into "background fps" limiting mode. It's happened to me a few times and the way I have fixed it is to change it to a mode where it's not having a problem, then shut down the game, then bring it back up and change it back.
