Tanking 101
Aggro Management
What's all these stats do?
For the sake of brevity, only the basic outline will be covered. Exceptions and "buts" which apply to high-end PvE content will not be mentioned due to added complexity and if you're at the point of optimising at that level, this info isn't for you.
Primary stats include Strength, Dexterity, Intellect, Mind and Vitality. All of these stats can be allocated with your bonus points for levelling up.
Secondary stats include Critical Hit, Determination, Direct Hit, Tenacity, Skill Speed, Spell Speed and Piety.
A "tertiary" stat is weapon damage. Weapon damage is king and any increase will make a very significant impact on your effectiveness.
Each combat class/job will have a preferred primary stat. For tanks, this is Vitality. Melee DPS except Rogues/Ninjas will favor Strength. Ranged physical DPS and Rogues/Ninjas want Dexterity. Casters will want Intellect and finally Healers want Mind. The primary stats will have a significant effect on all your abilities.
Secondary stats are a fair bit more complicated.
Critical Hit - Increases the chance for a hit to deal extra damage as a critical hit. This stat also increases the severity of the critical hits.
Direct Hit - Similar to Critical Hit, Direct Hits deal extra damage compared to a normal hit. Compared to critical hit, direct hits are lower severity, but occur more often. As with critical hit, this stat increases the severity of the direct hits in addition to increasing the chance a direct hit will occur. This stat can only be found on DPS role gear, however it can be melded via materia on Tank and Healer gear.
Determination - Increases the potency of all skills and abilities.
Skill Speed - Rather complex stat. It affects Damage over Time effects at around the same potency as Determination but has other effects in reducing the GCD of weaponskills. Advanced players who are aiming at optimising their play will seek certain amounts of skill speed. Value is dependant on job.
Tenacity - A new stat introduced with 4.0 Stormblood. This stat replaces Parry and is only available on tank gear, and only affects jobs and classes of the Tank role. This stat increases damage done, reduces damage taken and increases the potency of healing spells and effects.
Spell Speed - Similar to Skill Speed, this stat affects the cast time and the GCD of spells. Black Mages will sell their own mothers for more spell speed and as a result, the stat occupies a value higher than crit for them. It's still a good stat for any other caster, including healers as it also affects periodic effects such as Damage over Time effects and Heal over Time effects.
Piety - This stat increases the maximum MP of class and jobs of the Healer role. It will not have any effect on Tank or DPS role classes. Piety also has the side-effect of increasing MP regeneration as the base regeneration is a function of maximum MP set at 2% every 3 seconds while in combat. The amount of MP desired by healers differs based on personal preference with some favouring a larger MP pool to have a strong reserve amount while others prefer minimal amounts of MP. As of 4.0 Stormblood, Piety is now considered as a full secondary stat, and has the same equipment stat caps as all the other secondary stats on all 4.0 and newer items.

This was how the game was originally. It was bad. It was fated to die an early death. In order to save their flagship title, Square brought in
Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P. After much struggle, he and his team took the game apart and put it back together so it looked like this:

This game was good and everyone loved it, to the tune of them putting out 4 expansions, with a 5th looking extremely likely. (The following videos may have spoilers, you are warned.)

what's this guy's deal. why does he look like this
Gear, mostly. Especially when you're catching up and you just dinged max level it's probably the easiest way to gear up. Besides that: items for glamors.
All in all I make more gil than I spend. For reference: I play ~10 hours per week, I don't do ex or savage content, I only have an apartment, my FC is pretty much bankrolled by 5 very active players and I've been playing since 2014.
Edit: I've been glamoring my armor to just look like my RDM set, because the RDM sets look fantastic.
Very short breakdown:
Get inspired @ https://ffxiv.eorzeacollection.com/ or https://www.reddit.com/r/FFXIVGlamours/
1. If you want to look like you're going to go fighting then you'll mostly want dungeon drops. For instance, my Anubis-inspired thing is mostly dungeon drops.
2. A lot of versatile items come from Veteran Reward, so just being subscribed for a while. A pair of pants you can dye in any color of the rainbow is pretty useful.
3. Golden Saucer has a bunch of versatile stuff as well as a few gonzo items. The more neutral looking sets are pretty cheap and can be dyed and easily matched with other items.
4. MSQ also provided a lot of glamor rewards, I am very fond of 55 Armor, but there's a more. Once you got them unlocked you can always buy them again from any Calamity Salvager.
3. A lot of instantly recognizable items come from rep vendors from the beast tribes. Like the fucking Namazu bell or Meandering Mog Slippers.
4. You will find a lot of cool items on the market board. Most of it crafted by players. Here's a good overview of what's currently available.
Also midgame
Actually they're the whole game

"We plan to conduct maintenance to fix issues on the public servers and restore lottery results data on Monday, May 16. This is expected to take approximately 8 to 10 hours, and should make purchase of and relocation to plots won in the lottery possible once more.
Until this maintenance can be performed, however, relocation and sales for all plots will be suspended. We regret the delay, but ask for your understanding as we work to resolve these issues with the necessary caution."
I was at the Gold Saucer, that's fun. I like crafting but so far I could not wrap my head around it. Apparently I did some in 2016 but I have no recollection.
Do the Main Scenario Quest, everything unlocks based on your progression through it.
Do your class quests. At level 30, you'll be able to upgrade your class to a job. Equip your job stone when it's handed to you.
That's the super important stuff.
There's almost nothing you NEED to know but so much that is NICE to know. I think the best thing to do is dip your toe in everything a little bit and see what you like.
Also I think there's a gap in the NPC dungeons for Heavensward and Stormblood, levels 50-70.
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
The Garo PvP event started recently, you might want to look at that while people are doing it as PvP may dry up again once people have the rewards they want.
And yet the Feast was dead and only needed 8.

it's significantly easier to get 10 People than it is to get 2 tanks, 2 healers, etc
also the feast wasn't fun
CC is better, and the dota-inspired skill sets are better. I hope it will remain fun to play a few rounds of between other activities.
One of the Garo mounts needs 10 frontline wins to get. First place wins only, mind.
There are some AMAZING weapons in store from the weapon design contest, including some really good "joke" weapons.
I'm a big fan of the machinist gun that's a bouquet of flowers and the warrior axe that's a pufferfish on a stick

Maybe rival wings wouldn't be dead if they'd have given it a daily. It's better than frontline anyway.
From having rooted around in the engine guts a bit I believe there's no reason the engine can't do this, the off-hand knife is internally a separate off-hand weapon model it auto-equips to your model when you equip the mainhand item in the character inventory. Monk offhands, bow quivers, the card duel disk plate thing on astro weapons, the box machinists wear on their hips with their guns, katana scabbards, and the red mage focus they hold above their offhand are also coded this way.
Honestly it amazes me they've never bothered doing anything with the MCH ammo box. Literally every weapon uses the same one. At least let me turn it off...

I feel like it's a major wasted opportunity they don't have off hands for anything other than the one class that uses Shields, even with so many classes that visibly have something that could function as an offhand.
