I always do on the first playthrough. I leave completionist for second runs .

Also I was told the unique classes have random skills? Cause this Templar had QuickDraw and lightning hands and shoot shoot stab was really fun.

Interesting, I played on the Switch and found the load times nearly unbearable at times.

Also it's disappointing that you can't import a file of community members to fill out the ranks of your soldiers.

I found the Lost missions to be the most fun, and was sad when they dried up about halfway through the campaign.

On the other hand lost missions going will be brilliant for me.

They absolutely annihilate performance and are the main time my PS5 crashes playing this game.

Oh don’t get me wrong they aren’t good that’s for sure but I’ve seen worse so I guess why they didn’t bother me for the most part. Until I was angry with the game and had to reload THEN it was the worse thing in the world lol. If I was half as good at prose as I was profanity I could be a poet. The loss just seemed to be busy work and another mechanic thrown on top of the mountain I was stressing about . Also can I remark on how fucking op the chosen gear is ?

    • The dlc classes are very fun , though the reapers stealth breaks the game difficulty wise
    • Rangers might as well be fucking immortal anime ninjas

Edit - forgot to mention psi operatives are op holy shit
Yeah, there's a couple other classes that get really OP in the lategame. Off the top of my head, I think the rest of the OP classes are
    -grenadiers
    -sharpshooters
    -specialists
    -skirmishers
    -templars
    -SPARKs

    That is the joke.
I mean honestly maybe I'd leave SPARKs off, but I suspect that's just because I haven't played with them enough to click some really stupid buttons with them. And maybe I'd leave specialists off, but some of those support abilities are pretty incredible and I just don't use them much because of how good alpha strikes are in XCOM 2. And aid protocol being one action and not turn-ending is low-key some really good action economy.

When I last played I think I used the option that randomized your skills which made for some real great and real worthless characters.

I am in the business of saving lives.

Specialist were always my best characters. Maybe because I wasn't playing on the hardest difficulty. But the reaction fire build did a ton of work for me over the course of the game.

Random skills certainly leads to some weird stuff. Holo sight for everybody <3

If so, then yeah it can be tough.

This can happen with rocket launchers in UFO Defense. The most XCOM of XCOM moments.

Gatekeeper doesn't make sense as a random reward.

That WOULD be an awesome reward though.

Sometimes I think about 100% XCOM but some of those challenges are the antithesis of why I play the game.

I might just put it on easy for the finish in like 6 months challenge.

The 6-month challenge is one of my favorite campaigns of XCOM that I've played. I did it on commander but not iron man, and the time pressure was very engaging. Interestingly, I was at a low tech level but so were the aliens, so encounters ended up being with lower-tier enemies throughout. It got real sweaty when engaging Sectopods, but there were some enemies that never even came up!

This is exactly the kind of cheevo I love: a different way to play the game that demands different strategies and priorities, one that produced a different experience, not a collectathon or checklist.

Oh gotcha. There's a mission with a guaranteed gatekeeper, which is also supposed to be the first time you see one.

That research is intentionally throttled by story progress.

So by the way , what are the gatekeepers anyway? Are they an actual species the elders found ? Or are they failed experiments put into the shell because the power made them a blob and now they need the life support system?

I watched a bit of a video on that. I had looked into a similar game, Battle Brothers, but got turned off when they started talking about how women weren't tough enough to be hardened mercs in a violent world. Sounds like this one doesn't pull that shit?

I'm doing a female only company as my first run. A little tricky finding new members but started with 4 women and recruited 2 more after a few days.

It is low fantasy, emphasis on low. There are things out in the wilds.

But I get what ya mean. I've been playing and enjoying it since early access started but in the back of my mind I'm always thinking, "This, but Greyhawk please!".

So far the weirdness has been ROUS, ghosts, and some hints of zombies.

For those still on the fence, I just finished recruiting three wolves in to my team and plan on getting a lot more, and there's options for battle ponies in plate mail armor.

    Don't be fooled.

That armor is literally just a bunch of the starter shields (barrel lids) tied to the pony with ropes.

There's some alchemy, if I'm understanding correctly, and this fucking "bomber" I just encountered might as well be a wizard because he shoots fire arrows, and fire only goes out if you have specific skills (I don't think I've unlocked the tech to roll around on the ground), and spreads to whomever you're adjacent to in combat. The ability to use fire attacks might as well be magic.

Been watching Jorbs latest long war series and thought hey I've not played any xcom like games in a while, that sounds fun. Getting wrecked every mission in classic with bad pulls, wandering into the outsider early and lack of map knowledge. It's like I forgot how to play these games entirely. It's so much fun.

Okay, I figured I'd try Wartales. Worst case I refund it right?

Started it up to see what the battle mechanics were like and an hour and a half later I have to force myself to stop because I need sleep.

My archer seems like a good dude. Hasn't hit his own friends yet, and with Deftness he's not likely to.

I finally beat the encounter with two bombers and five other dudes in the mist (one of the bombers started off in the mist so I couldn't immediately engage him to prevent him from fireballbombing. So he did get off a fire attack, but it was on the boar I domesticated. I lost the boar but won the fight.

Finished a Chimera Squad run on impossible. Apparently I got real good at this at some point - only 2 Flawless missions but I never had to use the robots, only 2 civvies killed, and only had 2 firefights where I had to stabilize a bleeding out squaddie. I did spend a lot of time training away scars but it didn't really hinder me too much. Axiom, Claymore, and Shelter were my unused recruits.

Also I had forgotten there was Sequel Bait in the credits AND just how small the dev team was for the game. I want sequels!

Things I learned from Wartales that I wish I knew when I started:
Running is probably the best perk.
You can change up your recruit's profession by right clicking on their profession emblem. Super useful as a full set of crafting/mining is a must. This however resets a recruit's career progression.
Pitons are a funky mechanic. You can set up a Piton if you're at the top of a mountain and this lets you lower a rope that you and your zoo can go up and down. No idea how to climb a mountain from the bottom though.
Burning wood while you rest produces charcoal and makes your troops happy.
Recruiting animals is easy, engage them in melee with one character then have another recruit walk up, if the animal's health is low enough and you have rope in your inventory a 'capture' icon should appear. Any way, that's how come I got this bear now.
Lots of areas you visit have interactable elements, but it's a bit of a pixel hunt. ALT key gives you a bit of a highlight around interactable elements.
Riposte is kind of busted especially on a fully kitted out recruit(shield skill). It is hilarious when you engage an archer in melee and instead of trying to disengage he punches you and the response to that is *inset tank shell going through ballistics dummy gif*
