The tired mechanic never got to me cause I kept a large roster to begin with. Usually I would cycle out units as soon as they reached max rank.

Maybe bring 1 or 2 alone so they could be like the squad leaders in my head.

Perhaps the game doesnt really teach you what's strong and weak play very well.

What made me irritated was watching a run that was well in order turn into a wipe because a pod with two mind controllers and a grappler joined the party at the same turn as the Chosen Assassin jumped in.

I just had a single Codex I was getting ready to kill and then one guy was mind controlled, one guy was grappled, one guy was stunned, the stunned guy was hit with a psi storm and would die unless I got him out, another guy I could control was in the psi storm so his weapon was empty, leaving me with a single character left that could do anything useful at all against a cloned codex, a new pod, and a Chosen.

At that point I reloaded the game back at the Avenger and went elsewhere.

Then I ran into the Viper Ruler for the first time, and knocking him down left me poorly enough placed that another pod killed a couple dudes thanks to the reactive ice breath.

Part of this is poor sign-posting--I wasn't upgrading my baseline weapons and armor because it was hidden in Engineering instead of the Proving Ground, so tanking ability was lower than it should have been. I definitely haven't been following the optimal upgrade path because I sure as hell don't remember anything about the tech tree and any prerequisites.

But the way the game was tuned previously stuns were largely limited and especially once you got some armor it was a matter of each pod wearing you down, maybe one guy getting grappled or stunned. Having 3 out of 5 people disabled-but-not-killed wasn't something that happened.

edit: without the Chosen, 2 out of 5 would be disabled, which would have been rough but recoverable.

I never liked "squad of colonels" and avoided it except in make-or-break missions like Avatar raids or Chosen assassinations. One colonel leader, and everyone else is gaining XP on the mission. If I start running out of non-colonels, time to get more rookies.

I mean if you continually do resistance missions as you should your bench guys will get lots of promotions and bonus stats, which makes it easier to fill holes in your lineup . Also recommend to have at least one spark as they do not gain fatigue and are always nice for when you need extra armor shred.

I didnt say you can play however you like. I said theres multiple valid ways to play optimally. That doesnt mean infinite ways to play. It doesnt mean you cant play badly (you can).

The fact is theres a handful or so of overal meta strategies for how to play and make teams that work effectively on all difficulties.

Whereas a lot of people falsely believe their chosen, preferred way to play as the only effective one (and thus their subjective pick for strongest and why they evaluate others as weak).

All ways require practice and effort to get good at. You cant just swap over and be good at another way instantly on a high difficulty. You'll naturally gravitate towards the way that suits your personality and tendencies the most. This plus confirmation bias makes an objective answer of best impossible. Its only ever going to be what's best for you.

Sharpshooters get a break because they can't move and use their weapon in the same turn. Rifle gives them a big-damage hit if they don't move, but they start getting the multi-shot pistol stuff pretty quick so they can be dang flexible that way. Something like Faceoff with certain ammo types lays out a tremendous amount of damage overall with lots of enemies in LoS.

Plus it lets you build out the Sharpshooter class so that the rifle is secondary instead of the only real focus.

Pistol sharpshooters are tremendously flexible. I always build two primary sharpshooters, one for the end game sniper monster and another for pistol shenanigans.

With backups of course, you always have backups.

The pistol one is super handy for timed missions.

I am 10 missions into my current modded Legendary Honestman campaign, if I abandon this one too, I am uninstalling the game yet again for a year or so until next attempt.

This time, I have yet to lose any soldier, which is probably my best attempt so far. I already got 3 scientists, Magnetic Rifles, and I am one day before getting Gauss Weapons for Grenadiers and Sharpshooters.

My next mission will be my second Retaliation though, so I am fully expecting my luck to end here.

I'm not saying sharpshooter pistol builds aren't nice, I'm saying that iirc the specific advice of "put ammo types on them" is something that no longer synergizes with pistol builds in WOTC, iirc.

Something that helped me tremendously was realizing that you could just buy abilities at the training center , having grenadiers with all the shooting and explosive skills is really helpful. Plus there is always a chance they get good skills from other classes .

They do apply. Sharpshooters are an exception.

Again, for clarity: Gunslinger pistols have ammo types applied.

This is why they delete sectopods with bluescreen rounds.

Well, it has been like a year since I last played, so don't count on my confidence too much. I'd check myself, but I'd have to free up some space and reinstall.

For what it's worth, the wikis seem to think ammo works on sharpshooter pistols.

I'm fairly certain I have memories of obliterating a sectopod in wotc with triple shot and that free shot combined from my last playthrough.

Without it the pistol would just tickle the thing.

I am 15 missions into my current modded Legendary Honestman campaign, I still did not lose anyone (technically), but had a really close call just now + I got reminded why ADVENT Priests are irritating.

They are irritating because of Stasis, because if they use it on someone, it does not disappear even if they are killed during a turn, which is a different behaviour than Sectoid's mind control.

I almost lost my Templar, because I fought a large group of weak enemies at the same time, but he was put in Stasis, and enemies managed to flank him from both sides, hitting him both times because I did not manage to eliminate them all quickly enough. Fortunately, I had a great luck, because he was only hit twice by 3 dmg, so he survived with one health point.

In the separate mission, in which I had to save VIP, and a Sitrep that caused me to have less time for evacuation. While I was close to the evac point, Priest put Stasis on my soldier, which caused him to miss the timelimit, and now he is captured. At least now I have some fun emergent storytelling, because my captured soldier was one that had the exact same surname as another one from my barracks, so I decided they are brothers, and was always putting them on missions together. Now I will need to save him as soon as a covert operation for it appears, because come on, I will not leave his brother worrying about him.

It's a damn shame we've not gotten a sequel to Gears tactics. I'd really like to see more in the tactical game space that push aggressive play, and punish play it safe creep forward play.

Wasn't a perfect game by any means, but it was very good with a very well told story

The game really wants you to knock over a pillar or a statue of the God Emperor on the enemy instead, and I can't really argue with that direction.

Update: I got the rescue mission to save my captured soldier pretty quickly, I managed to do so, but it was almost a bloodbath, because I activated one enemy pod + got enemy reinforcements + activated Chosen Hunter in the same time. Everyone managed to escape (I did not even bother to fight them all), but two of my soldiers were bleeding out and needed to be carried away to the evac point, so that was another really, really, REALLY close call.

In other news, 21 missions into my Legendary Honestman campaign, still no casualties in my squad!

I thought X-Com 2 encouraged aggressive play quite strongly with the timed missions.

I completely had to change my X-Com 1 overwatching up the map approach.

  • EspantaPajaroEspantaPajaro Registered User regular
Really ? Personally the timer was a complete non issue, hell it even pauses once you are engaged with the chosen . I always get the order that prevents the timer from ticking until concealment is broken . I remember it being more strict in vanilla but I’m not sure I can trust my memory on that.

In case anyone is wondering, my good fortune of not losing any soldiers at Legendary difficulty finished at mission 26. From that point, it went straight into "Son, with me, every mission is a suicide mission" routine.

Well, I still have like 30 soldiers in barracks, but I am at mission 40 or something (stopped counting), and lost something like 8 soldiers (+ 2 captured and not yet saved).

I knew that modded Legendary campaign would be hardcore, but there is one part where it is, for me, TOO hardcore: Enemy Materiel missions from Covert Infiltration mod. You can perhaps ace the first mission of this kind, but every mission of this type after that is just courting death. Just now I lost Lt Ranger and Cpt Reaper, and let me tell ya, rewards were not worth it.

Supply Run, 12 chests on the map, two of them are disappearing every 2 turns after squad gets revealed unless we get to them first, they almost always have the Lost on those maps, and they contain regular amount of ADVENT enemies, AND enemy reinforcements are appearing every 2 turns too!

Managed to wrap up my LWOTC Mod Jam campaign the other night. I was way over prepared by the point I finished as I don't think I even had any injuries on the final network tower/under sea missions. My custom character, a reaper, was probably MVP of the campaign, since banish is just great, even after it just recently got nerfed. Was thankful that other than an issue with templar skill picks resetting constantly, the recent patch was still playable. I'll try playing on commander next time I get the XCOM itch again.

Also, I just discovered there's a Persona 5 tactics game? Anyone tried it out?

Grabbed Daemonhunters since it was on sale to play on my steam deck while traveling and I like it a lot. Lots of good qol upgrades, like the whole squad getting full AP when you uncover a new pack, 100% hit rate with crits giving special effects like disabling guns rather than straight damage, lots of interesting abilities and interactions, overpowered assassins but limited since a lot of buffs and interactions only apply to knights, good story so far, etc etc.
Plays well on the deck although it drains battery super fast and I need to play plugged in. Also tiny text but not unreadable.
Anyways I know I’m late to the party, but highly recommend if anyone is still on the fence.
