I have the camp chest but I haven't stolen more than one item the whole game (a key).

I am playing on region-locked and I think I skipped a region while completing a delivery quest. Just walked out of a Tracker camp to get ambushed by a bunch of level 6 jerks (I'm mostly level 4-5) who seem to have ripostes that do twice as much damage as my strikes. I had my berserker fury and the responses sent me straight to dying.

Gonna be awhile before I can ironman this.

Chimera Squad is a short game reusing XCOM2 assets that got zero post-release support. The majority of the work put into that game was art design and writing.

And it worked. It's a bummer they didn't just let that art and writing team just keep pumping out Chimera Squad content while Midnight Suns was in development. Playing XCOM2.5 is pretty fun!

I feel like the biggest miss with Chimera squad was that they didn't lean harder into the "XCOM but cops" aspect; there were bonuses for taking suspects alive but they were fairly whatever, and it was trivial to just put tranq rounds on your more shooty operatives and then never really worry about going out of your way to take anyone alive for the rest of the game. Or just take Cherub and Zephyr who knock people out by default. Given how getting live captures is such an integral part of most XCOM games, it seemed bizarre not to have it be more of an actual mechanic. Like, I expected to have to worry about whether to risk putting my guys at risk to take a dangerous enemy boss alive vs just shooting them, but there was never really any such tradeoff there.

  • Evil MultifariousEvil Multifarious Registered User regular
Tranq rounds are an opportunity cost compared to other ammo, I guess, but they didn't reduce damage or anything, did they? I could see that being the trade off if they wanted to make it harder to capture enemies.

  • DracomicronDracomicron Registered User regular
We're supposed to feel uneasy about capturing and experimenting on xenos, as opposed to providing clean deaths on the battlefield.

The people we fight in Chimera Squad are citizens that we fought to save in the first two games. I don't take killing them lightly and feel a lot better when I can save them.

I also take exception to "XCOM but cops" since they expressly say that they aren't granted law enforcement purview outside their remit of securing dangerous alien tech. They're more of a military force brought in to combat terrorists. It's a fine line, but they do attempt to walk it.

I'm really not a fan of all the timing minigames in Wartales. They're not fun or appropriate for a turn-based game of interest to people with bad hand/eye coordination.

If combat involved rhythm shit, I wouldn't be annoyed with the minigames. I just wouldn't have bought the game in the first place.

The bard minigame is particularly bad because it's literally just random notes being played over a user-selected song (the game comes with a whopping 1 song to select).

You know what I’d love to see but never will, a sniper elite game in the xcom 2 setting. It fits the framework of like being a single rebel sabotaging large bases and groups, and you could have awesome stuff like not every enemy can be headshotted, and so like you have to use X-ray and tech stuff to figure out the different aliens vulnerable organs and where they are

Maybe even introduce a mechanic where nemesis snipers are somewhere in the map akin to war of the chosen persistent enemies

I've started a Long War modded campaign for XCOM1 and I'm enjoying it quite a bit! It's been pretty rough so far, both due to the changes they've made and me being rusty at the game. I'm about a month and a half into the campaign and I think I've done fairly well, but only because I did a soft reset and several save scums.

One of the roughest things to get used to from base XCOM has been the increased randomness of damage. There have been several occasions where I banked on one-shotting a sectoid by charging them and shooting point black, only to see them survive with one point of health remaining. Another time I lost a poor rookie because their AP grenade only did a single point of damage to a 2 health thin man.

There are lots of situations where making a bunch of <50% shots is the best alternative I can find, and the number of times my soldiers have survived a crit with one hit point remaining is ridiculous.

The last thing that happened was a large ship appearing and landing. I've sent my best gals to greet them, but I'm terrified that sending anyone at all was a major mistake considering how early it is in the campaign.

I've said before, my go-to pie in the sky is Necromunda XCOM. Not so much a genre remix, but a legit remake of the tabletop game with skirmish selection, ganger customization, loot, etc. Just having procedural generation to the missions, enemies, and loot would mean nigh endless replayability. Plus ironman mode so you don't savescum when your heavy loses her arm...guess you better find an augmetic...

Might be interesting to do a Civ-style game post-XCOM2. You beat the aliens, but what now? Humanity is scattered and beaten, alien and human warlords fight for resources, and what's going on with all these fucking lobsters that keep attacking cruise ships? You need to unite the world and unlock tech so that people (human and/or alien, depending on your faction) don't starve or die of preventable diseases.

I would have loved Mordheim xcom. The game we got was way too faithful to the original game, in my opinion. Marrying the concept of scavenging for magic plutonium in a nightmarish murder city with modern xcom mechanics sounds really cool to me.

I found both the Mordheim and Necromunda games to be muddled messes of UI and controls. Unfortunate, when the model for doing it right was right here all along.

Daemonhunters did it right at least, though I have not been able to get into the DLC.

What would a Doom Xcom even look like? It's a single character focused game and the doom guy doesn't even take cover.
The closest to that is the original Xcom. Patrick Stewart with maxed out stats in power armor armed with one of each gun.

Doomguy vs the XCom aliens would be hilarious though. A Sectoid mind controls him to drop his weapons and he just tears it's head off instead.

I want to say you take the roles of the alien invaders, trying to build up your tech and forces before Doom Guy busts into your base and finds new and interesting ways to murder you.
Kind of like a turned base Dungeon Keeper, except instead of a party of heroes invading your base, it's just the Doom Guy.

Speaking of XCOM in other genres, I was gutted when XCOM Alliance was cancelled back in the day, but in retrospect there was no way they had the tech to do the concept justice at the time. Nowadays however...

For those who don't know, Alliance was to be an FPS/Strategy hybrid set in the OG XCOM universe. From wikipedia:
The gameplay of X-COM: Alliance would emphasize team management and tactics. Through the first-person perspective, the player would assemble and lead squads through a series of story-driven missions with various primary and secondary (optional) objectives. Teams of up to four members would be selected from a pool of soldiers, scientists and engineers (and later also friendly aliens). Each team member would have different skills as well as their own unique abilities, voices, personalities and attitudes, and was supposed to be acting differently from the others even if put in similar situations. The characters' speech, movement, and combat effectiveness would also rely on their emotional state, influenced by their individual personal traits and conditions such as their surroundings and levels of morale and fatigue.

Additionally, a large 2D component was planned for the game's management and research part. Besides the single-player mode, multiplayer co-operative, deathmatch, and capture the flag modes were being planned as well

It was a classic case of "over-promise, never deliver" and in retrospect a lot of the features they promised in various interviews were way too far ahead of their time. E.g, they had planned to have "Aliens" style helmet cams so that you would always be able to see what your allies were doing via their camera feeds in the top-left of your HUD, which on its own would have been an incredible technical feat at the time given that development started three years before the release of Half-Life. The custom squadmate personalities with different dialogue for different squadmates or combinations of squadmates in various situations also sounded neat, but would have neccessitated a lot of recorded dialogue.

Some of what they made did survive, however. Behold, the intro video, in all its glorious 90's CG glory!

Been playing Wartales. Some of the battles are a slog, but I like the fact that you can kill the leader and enough dudes to demoralize them enough to flee. There's a lot of moral grey in the game and I find myself doing some unsavory shit just to pay wages ontime and feed my team...

...which includes three alpha wolves and a dominant sow (because one of the wolves was raised by boars and gets a bonus if one is on the team). My animal crew eats so much meat, I'm buying out the meat vendor every visit to town, but if you get the Pack tactics level 3 upgrade for wolves they get +50% crit if there are at least three wolves on the team. +50%!

I had an idea for an XCOM one time where you’re in Hell and you’re marshalling a force to stop Satan from finally forging a key that can open the gates of Hell.

You’d pick up chopped up corpse bits to level up your troops, so you’d want to avoid totally blowing up the enemy. Plus instead of perma-death any downed troops turn into spirits that you can stick back into some leftover corpse bits and level them up all over again.

    That’s kinda like DOOM.

XCOM Doom is just you playing Doom Guy but with a whole squads worth of movement and actions. The trademark "impactful squad deaths" aspect of XCOM is instead pieces of his humanity falling away as the rage consumes him. Your job as the player is both guide his destructive force as well as hold on to the small glimmer of what keeps him from becoming them.

Maybe the between round strategy layer is you managing his psychological mind-palace. Add a room to the base that's just full of his favorite stuffed animals from childhood (+2 DEMON FACE RIPPING). This room here is merely the memory of the smell of his Grandmothers cooking (+1 ROCKET EVERY TIME YOU VAPORIZE A DEMON).

Chimera Squad is basically Mass Effect XCOM. Small paramilitary task force of misfit, quipping aliens who get into a shootouts on every single investigative mission? Which they travel to in the Mako? The only thing missing is the romance, which could be remedied by taking a page from Fire Emblem and adding more dialog at the base and friendship bonuses for teaming up with squad-mates. Maybe some interplanetary travel to round it out.

The direction they went with the post-XCOM 2 setting is so good, and I really hope they keep Chimera Squad's diversity of abilities and fun vibes for XCOM 3.
