iPhone/iPad: Faces not detected on photos - anything I can do?

If my phone doesn't detect faces on a picture (even though I would say they're quite obviously faces), is there anything I can do to still add those photos to a person's album? In concrete terms, I've got a bunch of pics from Christmas meals that have my dad on them, and I'd like to have those pictures show up in the album that the Photos app creates for my dad - but since the phone doesn't even detect any of the faces, it seems I can't tag the photos so manually.
Any tips? Or is this just a case of Apple doing that thing where something either works perfectly automatically or it doesn't work at all and there's nothing you can do manually?
