Yeah. Same old shit different kind of paint with 1-2 new features.

I just can't do it unless it's giving me a mood, giving me good gameplay, or scratching some kind of technical itch. I just can't do games that are a cobbled-together mass of C+ tier items anymore.
it's not just that it's the same, it's the same in the bad way it's always been. the bethesda scaling via perk points thing has always been bad; it's constricting, it's joyless, it's boring, it fucks up difficulty scaling.

the company is just fully inapable of making an interesting and rewarding perk tree. it's been a problem since fallout 3!

I watched the first episode of The Essex Serpent because I haven't gotten around to cancelling my Apple TV thing yet and I wanted to see if the serpent is his penis

It feels very... wrought. Like, the scenes are nicely lit/shot, the performances are good, the dialogue is fine, it just constantly felt... just slightly like it was trying too hard? However, it did manage to be interesting to think about.

The lady's deal was presented impressively quickly and with extreme efficiency (basically as soon as the dude gripped the doctor's arm saying he wouldn't let him operate) but I'm not entirely sure how it ties in thematically yet.

I was a little confused at first about why the vicar was so insistent that the serpent isn't real, but once you see the townsfolk start getting more and more superstitious and the threat of violence bubbling up underneath that, it starts to make sense.

Anyway I'm not even sure I'll keep watching (it pales in comparison to the reason I tried Apple's thing (Severance)) but the aerial shots of the marshes were super cool

Like, the way the narrative of Mass Effect is structured, couldn't you just not do the lame bits that don't work well?

I wouldn't expect dropping probes on planets to collect crafting mats to get more than a passing mention.

I have watched two let's plays of the series. So, it's an actual question. Is there a reason to have those characters have any more screen time than the absolute minimum required to check the "we have serviced this segment of the fanbase" box?

Removing the z-axis makes it so much easier for my brain to manage what shields need to be rotated away to recharge etc

If you are into musicals at all, check out Central Park (what if Bob's Burgers was a musical every episode and also had Broadway/Disney royalty as voice actors?), Schmigadoon (a parody of the Rodgers and Hammerstein era of 60s musicals, a sort of isekai but for 60s musical-land), and Come From Away (a filmed version of the Broadway production of Come From Away). Apple TV has a surprising amount of great content for theater kids like me.

Its actually just the Microsoft showcase technically

The MS/Bethesda showcase is only called that because Bethesda is big enough that MS didn't absorb it into Xbox Game Studios and lets it operate under its own brand under Xbox proper Activison/Blizzard will be the same.

It's also relationships built up over 120 hours of gameplay. You're going to have to work hard to make that not seem stupid in a 2 hour movie. I'm not sure if it's possible. Might be able to get away with it as a trilogy following the feel of the series (first establishes the setting and some of the characters, second focuses on the characters, third brings them both together in a great big bang). Still seems like a hard needle to thread. And the fans are rabid.

If you remember, the first game is pretty thin on lore itself. It’s almost solely from Shepherd’s and the Alliance’s perspective.

You can accomplish a lot in 2.5 hours if your script is good.

The first game is thin on lore? The second one is almost entirely about your crewmates, and 90% of the lore introduced is basically made irrelevant in the third one.

I think the first one is the only one that can actually stand on its lore.

EDIT: I just realized you were talking about the worldbuilding that IS done by the crew writing. So, yeah, the first one does all the heavy lifting establishing the history of the central conflict, but the second one does all the heavy lifting establishing the wider context of the story being told.

So, you're right and I'm right, haha.

And this is why I don't think it'd work even as pre-planned a trilogy.

tbh I think Bioware games (pre-the weird GAS mecha-suit thing they tried to do anyways though ironically that probably would work as a film because the story was very lightly done) in general are too dialogue heavy to work as film adaptations. Multi season series maybe but I don't think it's possible to cram that much talking into a 2-2.5 hour format.

They could likely do just the main plot points and get a ME1 movie done in the sense that it hits those plot points but it's going to feel like a half assed version of a thing that's already been done better at which point why is it even being made.

I have a high tolerance for aimlessness, particularly since it seems to be more about ~themes~ than an actual plot, but yeah I'm just... not quite entirely hooked.

I do frequently like musicals (1776 is my favorite movie, Galavant is one of my favorite shows) but for some reason hearing that something is a musical tends to make me less interested for some reason.

But I will make a mental note of these the next time the urge to just watch YouTube comes up

The first Mass Effect is I think kinda short on narrative is more the problem. It's a lot of faffing about on random planets for things that build backstory or are just sidequests till you finally end up on Virmire. You are really gonna need to build a middle act to the whole thing to make it work and probably cut a lot of random side story that doesn't go anywhere.

Set in 16th century Bavaria, Pentiment will take players on a narrative journey through the eyes of Journeyman Artist Andreas Maler during a time of great social unrest. Led by game director Josh Sawyer, this game is brought to life by a talented team inspired by illuminated manuscripts, woodcut prints, and history itself.
