Something I get asked in a lot of general meetings is what kind of stories I'd like to tell. This is before the part where they ask me to write something about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, or about a corrupt tribal casino, or about "What if Native Magic was 'real'?" It's the part where they pretend to care what I'm interested in.
And I always like to reference a piece about a Renn Faire. There's this great Cherokee web show, osiyo.tv - they do profiles on/interviews with interesting Cherokees from all walks of life. One episode was about the first woman jouster at an Oklahoma renn faire, who also happens to be Cherokee. And it's this cute, simple story about a woman who started as a "tavern wench," thought it was a sucker's game, and fought her way (both figuratively and literally) into proving herself in the lists. I use it as my example of, "There's no such thing as a Native story, they can be fuckin' anything! Natives can be big 'ol renn fair dorks, we can be anything!"
And then they ask me if I watch Yellowstone

Yeah I never got into any of the truly wild partying with the faires I worked because I didn't camp out on site, but it's absolutely there

Pretty much everything there lines up with my experience, in terms of general stuff that's still applicable in modernity - I can't speak a whole lot to the history because I worked at one from like 2005-2010, and while I got some stuff secondhand I was never really close with any of the true old timers
I worked for a smaller faire than the ones the book (and the guest) are primarily talking about, which has a slightly different vibe, but I've visited some of the bigger ones that were mentioned or alluded to and know people who have worked through their circuit

I never been to a cast party afterwards, but I am pretty good friends with the lady who plays "incorrigibly horny saucy washerwoman" because we had a good patter during their show and we exchanged numbers.
edit: one time I was at the "leather bag and jerkin" tent and I was like, "this is cool and all, but where do you keep the good shit?" and the guy showed me a pair of dope-ass like musketeer gloves with a cuff and everything
400 fuckin' dollars and if I had the money I would have bought them and worn them every day.

I used to make a point of going to King Richard's Faire in Carver, MA at least a couple times every year, but after I moved back to MA we had (have) that whole pandemic thing.
Along with this discussion, I somewhat recently heard about a local LARP camping event, so, spitballing, I guess.
If I ever git gud at spinning, maybe I'll go do demos (god knows I'm not interested in vending for a profit, that's too much hustle.) But teaching / creating atmosphere, yeah, this lil community theatre baby can get on some background work. I do miss the performing arts, and attending medieval fairs, and with PAX South dead, I need to figure out some social event.
...I guess I could try to offload all these shawls I keep making. I do like rustic yarns, so I could even make some that fit decorum, if I get a notion..

I thought this was going to be about how Rude Tales and Dungeons & Daddy's only "play D&D" in the vaguest sense.
I have a very hard time with the gamesmanship involved in something like Critical Role, it's a little too "DM as adversary" for my taste.
I mean most of the shows listed are playing entirely separate games with different playstyle and focuses from DnD, so that gamesmanship/"DM as Adversary" mentality doesn't really come up as much.

I went to a Ren faire one time and it was fine until lunch when some fucking weirdo dressed up as a fairy climbed onto the picnic table I was at, crawled over and took a bite out of my turkey leg. I left asap and will never return to anywhere that tolerates that level of whatever that was supposed to be.

Look, if I want to see knights joust and then do wrestling moves on each other, my option is Ren faire or Medieval Times, and there's only one of those around here.
Different RennFest events can occasionally have significantly different cultures too, like the vibes at the NC RennFest when I went were incredibly different from at the MD RennFest. NC trends towards bawdier humor from the core cast, a more Medieval Times-esque joust format, and more open sightlines. The MD RennFest trends towards a more serious core plot of Henry VIII-centered intrigues, and then a quicker and looser joust that feels more like pro wrestling. MD's "Revel Grove" setting is also a space that uses Disneyland-esque sightlines to get a bit more immersion going overall. It's real neat to see in practice!

This sounds very accurate.
A lot of the cast at the faires I worked would camp out (I lived close by and I abhor camping, so I did not), and that's absolutely where the real shit happened. Like, I've still got lots of stories, but not the full on "Yeah I was just trying to get back to my tent and I accidentally walked through an orgy" stories that I've heard from others.

The MD renn faire bird show had a host who absolutely would not stop telling rambling stories about his personal history, occasionally punctuated with a the briefest possible glimpse of a hawk or something. In contrast, the NC festival had so many goddamn birds, birds from hell to breakfast, zooming over the crowd and going after people's food and causing all manner of scenes. The biggest owl I've ever seen did a flyby close enough to ruffle my hair. It ruled
oh yeah the NC RennFest bird show had a vulture who was an absolute fucking goblin and I saw her steal and devour a turkey leg from someone on the bench in front of me
have had positive experience with the MDRF bird show but NC's was fantastic
The stage the birds were on was right next to the booth selling tacos and fried mac and cheese balls. That vulture could not be expected to do anything else
I don't typically listen to the 2003 era episodes of Knowledge Fight but I'm glad I listened to Mondays ep today, Dan's story of purchasing 300 stamps had me close to driving recklessly

My favourite podcast experience at the moment is listening to the Last Podcast on the Left episode on an event, and then listening to the It's (Probably) Not Aliens or the Knowledge Fight episode on it
Both podcasts are entertaining, but the contrast of wild speculation and reasonable logic really highlights the best qualities of each
