Every time the counter gets to zero it just resets. It’s the supernova version of random Instagram ads where the product is only on sale for the next hour, forever

Nah the stream wasn't the point. But to even bear the grainiest of witness to the demise of one of the old gas gods is both humbling and embarrassingly scary (to me)

Oh, so you're just saying that in general it's dying, whether it's now or 100,000 years from now
I'm a bit confused that a helium fusing star is supposed to go SN with so little warning. I thought SNs of massive stars happened after a carbon fusing phase, which while a lot faster than the C phase would still take a few millenia. I only did an astronomy minor and it was 15y ago.
From what I can search up, Betelgeuse is probably still millennia away from going supernova. "As Betelgeuse is still pulsing, the researchers determine that the star is likely early in the helium burning phase of its transition to a Red Supergiant and could likely go on burning for another 100,000 years until gravity wins entirely and the star collapses into a supernova." https://www.universetoday.com/150400/a-new-study-says-that-betelgeuse-wont-be-exploding-any-time-soon/
Hmm apparently it is fusing C and He at the same time and it is predicted to be really hard to see if further phases of fusion have already triggered.

A naked-eye visible supernova in our lifetimes would be so rad. There were well-recorded visible supernovas in 1006, 1054, 1572, and 1604. Then none since!

Even if it does we won't have to worry about it for over 600 years.
when we find out it exploded is when the energy from it reaches us so no it will be immediate once we find out
I don't know if there will be significant impacts this far away or not though

Hey sorry guys I had to stop to top Betelgeuse up, don't worry it won't run out of fuel anytime soon.
So what are we talking about?

When I was a teenager I heard somewhere that Betelgeuse could go supernova at any moment and for literally years when I was outside with a clear sky I would find Orion, find that bright red bitch above the belt and watch it for a while, convinced that I'd be actively watching it one day when it exploded.

i know but to see it unfolding makes it ...more real? i mean everything is guided by tsl...

I wouldn't exactly say sit around with the stream open waiting for anything.
