This league we're only getting a single set of challenge cosmetics but it has 4 levels that get fancier as you complete more challenges. They've also confirmed you'll be able to to use a "lower" tier effect if you prefer it.
Its funny, in PoE like so many other games if I had the choice to just wear nondescript appropriate outfits for my character, that's what I'd be wearing 90% of the time. It's not like WoW or an anime game where everyone is dressed weird and so you fit right in with your ludicrously over-the-top cosmetics.
I'd probably get more out of a fat stack of the skin consumables than I do most cosmetics, but I'd choke on indecision doing that.
The ones I have bought are like, Darkwood and Temple Armor. Ancient Dread and Emberkeep are like the absolute limit and they're usually a bit much. I also have a stack of things to hide effects.

yes the only acceptable poe mtx are skill fx and the crab pets
I'm going to be trying out the conflux private league this time around. I've been getting more and more annoyed with softcore trade and the currency farming meta, playing in a league might be a bit more my speed

Depends on the person. If I had been left alone without guides I'd have quit in the first week. Telling someone like me that bumbling around playing a fail build is "the real fun" would make me never talk to that person again.
Guide is the safe option sadly. The game is so dense that unless they are that kind of person, one who typically wouldnt be asking in a chat, then they may just bounce off.

im sorry but your suffering is a sacrifice im willing to make
im kind of courageous... a hero to some...
(i think having a friend to ask for tips etc is great tho, just going full guide off the bat is targic)
what made this instance particularly galling - it was a streamer - is that he wanted to go in raw and experiment and people were just flat out telling him to use a guide instead
Yeah the serious answer (no fun I know) is that everyone I've gotten to play PoE over the last several years would have run away crying if not for a build guide, including me on my first character.
I think the best way by far for a new player to learn is to have a good starter build guide -- you get way more comfortable with the passive tree seeing something that "works", and can back your way into understanding how the mechanics work more easily after seeing the result and tracing back to "okay how did I get this successful result?"
If they're mega huge into dissecting mechanics and stuff with 0 familiarity then sure yeah, let them do whatever. But that's pretty rare overall.

brb just typing up a 500 page manifesto about how gamers have become weak and blame it somehow on jorts becoming unfashionable
Challenge list has been released and is probably the easiest set of challenges I've ever seen, easy 35/40 and the remainder aren't anywhere near last league's.

New player friendly POE is not. When I tell people there’s two different modifiers for +dmg they pretty much check out right then and there

I'm playing without any kind of clue as to what's going on and actually having a good time, unlike the first time I booted the game up years ago when you would immediately get slaughtered by some witch spewing blue particle effects everywhere
I put the points in the things and the gems in the sockets and so far it's fine
I also logged on to get a bit of gaming in and saw that the servers are still down for an hour and also there are thirty-eight thousand people in the queue ahead of me

I guess
I will not play right now
dont worry the servers just arent up yet - when they turn everything on it should filter thru the queue fairly quickly (last time was on the order of minutes as opposed to hours etc)
just depends if the hamsters can take the pressure
but everything starts in an hour or so
also league starter is going to be pure phys damage + phys reflect cleave curse phantasm reaper heavy strike witch... maybe. it might be too good
great old ones tentacles and impale? mayhaps...

It's more the servers being down for an hour than the queue because my available time to play was roughly... an hour
I need to get to the point where I can get bows with more sockets so my arrows can shoot more arrows

We just sort of gave up on trying to get the clan leadership moved over to Tom, yeah? Since the current leader had logged in once and GGG was like "Nope, they're still active!"
@fRAWRst You convinced me to give this league a shot (and I'm using your build).

If I've just scratched the surface of the base game, should I keep doing that or hop into this league thing?
Assume I don't give a shit about optimizing anything, I just want to know if there's any reason to start now, like time limited stuff, or if the new content would be "wasted" on someone who hasn't chewed up the base game yet
Definitely do the league. It's everything in the base game + extra mechanics, loot and currency. I don't know about kalandra specifically but most League mechanics you can generally choose not to engage with if you really don't like them.

Watching my wife trying the game out and going necromancer witch and I'm struggling valiantly to not scream about flasks every time her health drops violently to like 20%
I think we're roughly at the same spot now so I really hope this has sensible multiplayer and not some eldritch dark souls nonsense

it has functional co-op but it is still somewhat eldritch due to magic's

Well, I guess Divine Orbs are the new Exalted. Looks like 1 exalt is going for 7c and 1 divine is around 90c on standard trade league.

Yup. As soon as they made divine orbs the crafting material and removed the ability to farm then from Incursion, they were destined to be the new currency.
One dropped for me in A4

The one thing I really dislike about that change is now I'm going to have to start trading for divine vessels again since it will be a huge waste to convert one orb into 5 vessels.

Exalts are 7c? WTF (I'm not playing since I'm out of town)
GGG decided to change up the economy last minute. Divine that still do the same thing as before are now swapped with Exalts in terms of rarity of crafting (edit: they swapped around crafting value). They also made uniqes rarer to push this further. I still havent had an exalt though but I know of people multiple divines heh. It is a strange thing to do this late in the game and doesnt seem well thought out or that they modified the values properly but that is standard GGG. But it could also just be standard RNG. It is rather strange though. Adding a prefix or suffix in controlled areas is much stronger than changing the values.
But you know throw things at a wall and see what sticks.
Edit: The league is pretty cool. Sad that it is way undertuned in terms of rewards.

GGG said they both have the same rarity, it's just that they took exalts out of the crafting bench crafts and substituted divines as well as changing the 6 link vendor recipe to give out fusings instead of divines.
It is a strange thing. The more I look into it the more it makes me just do an oh well. I never divine spammed or exalt spammed really. I used divines more than exalts of course but if they were even cost i would use exalt more. Exalt spam just eems more powerful than divine spamming so not sure if it makes any sense. It will be nice to be able to use exalts dont get me wrong. But then they are changing things up with rarer uniques to create some vacuum of well rolled unique items that they are throwing at a wall to see if people like.
Edit: As I do more of these lakes it appears that this strange economy change rarity of items nonsense funneled through to the league, and made it much more meh at end game for what you get out of chests. The rewards are not scaling. There are no shards or other ancillary drops that improve with difficulty. Wait for the patch as always for the league outside of overleveling.
Edit2: In fact I would actually probably ignore the league until the patch after talking to edge runners ive talked to. Even in red raps+ you only get those 2 drops out of currency chests etc heh. Or generate and save.
I found a build that I'm having fun with in the story, but the reports of wacky drop rates on currency are starting to get a bit worrying. Prooobably good that I didn't rush too hard this time -- more time for patches at least. I can probably keep entertained until TWW3 update on Tuesday at least.

Yeah, the league mechanic doesn't feel very rewarding or worthwhile as it stands right now.
I'm realizing now, after being a bit disappointed with the experience of actually playing the majority of my attempted builds in Grim Dawn, that PoE exists like WoW in my brain. Where I still want to play even when I'm pretty annoyed by whatever, because the game is solid enough that it could probably go purely downhill without any silver linings for quite a while before it lost value as a time sink when I want that sort of game.
This is the least rewarding league I have played in a long, long, time (maybe ever?) - it goes beyond the league mechanic (which is massively overtuned, and not rewarding), and seems to be an issue with the overall game - harder/no map sustain, basic currencies not dropping, fewer rare drops, definitely fewer uniques (this one was expected, at least).
I've actually left my loot filter on semi-strict instead of pumping it up once in maps, because there is almost nothing dropping - it's wild.
Definitely wait on playing if you haven't started, or take your time if you have, because it's pretty shit at the moment, unless you win the drop lottery.
This is the future. This is what we built. This is what we wanted. It must have been. Because we all had the fucking choice, didn't we? It is only our money that allows commercial culture to flower. If we didn't want to live like this, we could have changed it at any time, by not fucking paying for it.
So let's celebrate by all going out and buying the same burger. -transmet
They could definitely turn up the basic currencies early on. I noticed that even in the past two leagues after the change to currency stacks. It feels so bad early on, and then trivial later. Rather XCOM like.

im unironically feeling super op doing glacial hammer - the change to heatshiver is nuts
for those who didn't see
because frozen enemies also always count as chilled, thats over double damage
ees very jolly (and i always did glacial hammer ignite anyway)
and because this is over 100% of cold as fire, it means that the elementalist shaper of flames node gives 25% more ignite damage because the hit has most fire not cold. synergy
