Stuff to do in Savannah, GA?

SkeithSkeith Registered User regular
One of my cousins is planning on getting married down that way (most likely October), and I know precisely nothing about Savannah aside from it being on the east coast. Any recommendations as far as food or day trips go? Since I live in CA good barbeque is at the top of my list.

Savannah is lovely. I got married there. Food is excellent. I visit 3-4 times a year.

    Things to do.

The on off tours are fun, you can hop off at any time and hop back on later. I’ve done a few with my mom and wife and the sketch comedy one was the best because it was bananas.

    Leopolds Ice cream is famous

Tybee Island is nice for a beach day. Although in October it may not be the best time for visiting the beach. Check traffic before going because it’s 1 lane each way.

In downtown Savannah (river and historic district) you can drink outdoors (New Orleans style to go cups). Pirates house is a fine place to drink, it’s exactly as the name would suggest. It’s your tourist bar and a good place to take some pictures.

Club One does a lot of drag shows, and was well known as the home club of Lady Chablis, and I’ve been meaning to catch one, but have not done it yet. Maybe next time I go.

For BBQ Wiley’s and Erica Davis are great. They are on Wilmington Island, which isn’t in downtown Savannah, but its about 10-15 minutes away. Erica Davis has a Brunswick Stew I dream about.

    For fancier food.

Pink house is great, the kitchen burned up, but I think they rebuilt it.

Vic’s on the River is expensive but good

Cha Bella is farm to table and might be my favorite restaurant in Savannah.

Savannah for Morons is the comedy tour. I've done it as well and it's a great time.

Two Tides Brewing Company is a really cool spot. Service Brewing is one I haven't been to myself but they have a good reputation and are closer to the touristy stuff. Moon River Brewing near the river isn't really worth your time.

I'm not familiar with the BBQ spots there, but generally speaking you won't find any good ones near the the tourist parts of town.

We went on a haunted pub crawl last time I was there and it was awesome. As Zepherin mentioned you can drink downtown so you get to carry drinks with you behind bars and there are some legitimately creepy areas in Savannah at night so the stories really help make it seem cooler, although it is going to depend on the tour guide you get, but I would recommend that.

They have a good nerdy store in Nerdheim that's got a lot of neat stuff.

Spooky Steve does a great haunted pub crawl if you're looking for something a bit vaudevillian.

The open container zone is from River street in the North, Forsyth in the south, E. Broad, and MLK. One drink per person and no lid (I don't know why). The drink must be in a clear plastic cup no bigger then 16 ounces. That means no cans, no bottles, and no drinking outside of the To-Go zone. 9 times out of 10 the cop will tell you to pour it out, but they can write you a ticket for it and it is $200 and it does suck.

No lid is probably for the same reason that bartenders always open your can/bottle

So you don't leave the area with it

But the open container zones is nearly a square mile, and Savannah is all brick and cobblestones. It's a dangerous mix.

Oh! Speaking of danger, two things to keep in mine:

    1) Treat Squares as roundabouts (Yield to cars already in the squares)
    2) Never ever assume you have the right-of-way as a pedestrian. Almost everyone behind the wheel seems to be two drinks deep.

The Alley Cat was a good cocktail bar. They have (or had, it's been a while) an interesting menu format. The Sandfly BBQ on Barnard was good, but Google maps says it's now Saqib’s bbq emporium while still having a picture of the Sandfly. Shrug?

Savanah is a day drinking paradise.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

Sandfly still has their OG location in Skidaway. It's a real locals spot, but good brisket. The Black rabbit across from where the steamer used to be (On Bernard)

I never got a response, so I'm going to give you my main recommendations

    Graveface Museum
Pinball, cults, and serial killers. What more could a feller want? Easily the best thing to do on River Street.

    Cotton and Rye
Probably the best meal I've ever gotten in Savannah. Everything is perfect at Cotton and Rye, the ambiance, the food, the service.
The only shame is they make the best shrimp and grits in Savannah and it's a tiny little appratiser portion.

    Green Truck Pub
This is my go-to place in Savannah. Good food made by good people. It's nothing fancy, but it's always fresh.

    The Wyld
When I moved here, this is what I thought dining in Savannah would be. Fresh seafood, great drinks, dockside vibes.
People book the wyld as a reception venue all the time and it's a no brainer, the place is heaven on earth. It also floods during a king tide and they evacuate the kitchen by boat.

Got married in Savannah in October eight years or so ago (reception was at Vic's and our cocktail hour had a pre game as we rented two trolleys and sent out guests on a tour with some coolers loaded with booze.

Best meal I had the few times I've been in town was at Alligator Soul. The Crab Shack on Tybee has slamming key lime pie, we did our rehearsal dinner there.

Most of that Keylime pie comes out a bakery on Whitmarsh Island. They have it at the Wyld and it is pretty transcendental.

If you're going to be there on the weekend you must check out Back in the Day Bakery. Probably one of the three best things I've ever put in my mouth.

We desperately tried to get Back in the Day Bakery to do our wedding cake but they told us to kick rocks

Yeah, we went there too, but they wouldn’t do any real custom orders. It was like you could get a celebration cake, with one of their limited selection of flavors.

We got ours from Savannah Rum Runners Bakery & Cafe. And it was delicious. Also delivery was reasonably priced.

  • JokermanJokerman Registered User regular
If Back in the Day Bakery did wedding cakes there would literally be no other time or space to make anything else. They would be booked year round and you would have to get blackmail on an Alderman to get one made.

On a nice day the line will stretch around the block, past Graveface records to where Starland yard is. And it's honestly worth it. They did a Lemon Strawberry shakerpie I still think about when life is hard.
