Anyway, Lord of the Rings! The Ur-Fantasy novel! The book is great! The Movies are great! How will the show be? Good? Bad? I don't know, but I'll have fun finding out! Also, freaking Glorfindel! He finally made the cut!
Personally, while I love the original books as unique and always available, I'm fine with new people coming along and dabbling in the margins. The Shadow of War games were trashy fun. And it's not like the films are perfect in that regard either (I hated wishy-washy, doubting Aragon moments for example in the PJ version).
I do appreciate that trailer shot of that big ol' pile of First Age Elf helmets piled like a mass grave because that lets you know anyone who survived the First Age has seen some things.

Tolkien wrote extensively about the first age, and it'd still unfilmable unless your budget is 2 billion dollars, the third age is well explored, but the second is basically untouched. We got a few big events, the fall of numenor, but so much is left unturned.

I always took it as Ungoliant was just an evil spirit that thought spiders were a cool way to manifest. Ungoliant was the size of a stadium, so yeah that sounds terrifying.

Rings of Power is out on September 1st, in case anyone was visiting this thread and wondering. I think we'll cancel Disney + for a bit, since the only thing we're interested in is She Hulk there, and jump over to Prime for this and A League of Their Own.
The second age, is very ok. Except whoops we forgot about that one third rate lieutenant from the bad guys named, what was it, Sauron?
Third age is garbage trash. No one cares about that third age... Except the cast of Lord of the Rings!

I don't have Amazon Prime because I think Jeff Bezos is the Devil, but if reviews are good I might time a free trial near the end of the run to watch everything at once. And if reviews are bad I'll be a little sad but also chuckling to myself over Bezos taking an L. It's win-win. I either get some good Middle-Earth TV or Amazon takes a kicking.
Anyway I'm betting it'll be a solid B: better than the Hobbit movies but not approaching the LotR movies.

Simultaneously, I would be 100% on board if they just made all the characters queer POC just to explode nerd heads.
It's not gonna sound too Tolkien, because again he wrote very little about this era. We have some big events but very few little stories and actual narrative to go with it.
Everyone is gonna be EXTREME. Maybe not as much as the first age with feanor soloing Balrogs, but they are so much beyond the lions in winter of the elves and dwarves of the third age.
It literally doesn't surprise me he had notes. Like I've said before it feels like this show exists with its budget because Bezos wanted it to.
