You mean the Japanese DS game? I played this for 15 minutes once, and it definitely looked worthy of a longer inspection. The game is all about balancing the need to move the tank, and fire the guns, because you can't do both at once. The top screen is a 3d rendering of the battle, the touchscreen is a map. You can draw long or short paths on the map, and the tank trundles along until it reaches the end and stops (or you interrupt it). When you aren't issuing movement commands, you can rotate the turret and fire at enemy tanks, the view on the topscreen followed this IIRC.
Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it looked fairly nifty and if you get a chance I reckon it could be a winner. It certainly had potential. Not 5 star brilliant, but I remembered the name and hope to give it another play if I ever get the chance. English port would be most welcome.
All the "official" reviews I've read so far state that it's the most boring tank game ever created.
Wow, what an amazing follow up to your original post.
I guess I'll just forget about this one.
Well, heck. I went to a bunch of sites yesterday to check it out. And every review was identical, as if written by the same person.
Points made in each interview as follows
- Wanted to like the game
- Seemed like a novel idea
- Very dull
- No one is online for me to play against.
- Uncanny ability to make a tank shooting game the most boring game ever
Four separate reviews; same conclusion.
I'd rather hear from someone who has the game, but I'm not picking it up yet. Plus, the OP was (1) a week ago when I hadn't seen even ONE review and (2) a request for opinions from those who have the game.
IGN - 40/100
The main game is empty, the multiplayer is fun but shallow, the graphics are weak and including so few vehicle types and combat options gives the game a very narrow focus.
GameSpot 37/100
Tank Beat isn't much fun. There's very little to it, and what is there is bland, and simplistic. If there's one feat developer MileStone managed to pull off, it's how dull it managed to make the act of blowing up tanks. That might be a fascinating accomplishment, but it makes for an utter bore of a game.
GameZone 31/100
There is nothing in this game that represents fun. I hate to say that, but when all the members of the house give it a try and no one could say anything good about it, well, that just seals the deal.
Game Almighty 28/100
A more accurate name would have been Tank Crap.

Now, I don't know if this is "Nintendo Power's Giancarlo reviews Puzzle Quest as a 4/10" sort of bullshit, but that sounds like a shit game to me. I'd like non-funded opinions from people who paid for the game.
You went from being excited and trying to get a potential game on going and getting people's friend codes to finding out it's poop. It was a neat 180 on what was expected out of this game.

Well, I don't own the game. And now I guess I don't plan on buying it.
I had to set up the OP correctly though, as I got yelled at when I did the "Custom Robo Arena DS" thread and didn't do that.
Hmm, I have the game, and I really like it. I suppose you have to like skill-based combat, though. The core is something like; you develop different attack patterns for different enemies and situations, then adapt them for the terrain. Then you still need to micromanage your firing and its timing. I haven't played much multiplayer, only a bit of download play, but it was pretty fun. The story's admittedly pretty horrible, though.
Oh so they've done an English port? Well based on my 15 minute fumble with it I'd like to give it another go. Those reviews seem overly harsh to me, and I won't let them put me off following my own instincts on this. If I'm not going to like a game, I usually make my mind up very quickly and Tank Beat tickled my fancy.
I actually imported it awhile ago and I enjoy it. Its a hard game(not knowing any Japanese probably adds to this) and takes a bit of strategy on some of the missions. The controls are nice, and the action is fun. My only real gripe is that your team mates AI is kinda stupid and you really need to guide them around by hand for them to be effective.
I'm probably going to end up buying an english copy anyways so I don't have to guess what my mission is.

So you make the tank drive around with the touch screen and then shoot with the top screen? But you need to make paths?
I KISS YOU!

Plus it has tanks, which is always a good start.

Give it about 30%."
