I think I must suck at 3D because I have no idea where you people are coming from with the love of the non-fludd sections of the game. They drove me crazy and I found them way to hard, they practically ruined the game for me. Mario Bros. 3 and Lost Levels? Pains in the ass but they are nowhere near as difficult for me and they are much more fun.
When was the last time you played either of them?
Third I play pretty much every summer. Admittedly I haven't played Lost Levels in a few years. Did they ever release it on the GBA?

I've never found either of the 3D Marios to be particuarly close to the originals in gameplay or content, but I've got to say, those no-waterpack stages were damn close.
A comprehensive and refined collection of those stages, perhaps put in the context of worlds, would be the greatest thing ever.
Add in some classic power ups, and bring back the growing/shrinking element. Bam. Mario 3D.
bam. mario galaxies.
Yeah, that gameplay video where Mario grabs the mushroom, grows, then uses the raccoon tail to fly made me nostalgic as hell
I absolutely LOVE the way Mario controls in 3D. Nintendo is able to nail 3D platforming like no one else. Three buttons and an analog stick is all they seem to need. I pick up the controller and suddenly I'm a goddamn ninja, bouncing around the stages with absolute precision. I'm not just playing a game, I am Mario, kicking off the walls and diving onto rooftops. My friend, on the other hand, plays like he's poking the controller with two room-temperature hot dogs and cannot understand why anyone would find this exercise in frustration to be any fun.
I loved Mario Sunshine for its core game play mechanics and razor-sharp control and hated it for its sad level design. When puttering around the main area is more fun than the actual levels, you're in trouble. The game also suffered from some really bone-headed joint technical-design problems. For example: I could SEE levels in the distance. Why couldn't I strap on the giant propeller jetpack and go there? Noooooo.... you have to use warps and lose all your equipment in the process. Bah.
Mario Sunshine wasn't bad, it was a waste, especially for a main series that so rarely puts out genuine installments.

well, aside from the way he flies between the worlds (the collection of stages), its mario platforming in 3d without a waterpack. plus, theres been probably only a fraction of the entire game (and its concepts) shown to the public, so how can you write it off already?

GBC. You can unlock them in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, one of the best carts ever released.
The simple, no water pack platforming parts of the game were easily the best part. Nothing but pure, difficult, assraping.

The secret of levels.
Nintendo, make an entire game out of them. NOW.
I wish I could hate you to death. (I can't and then I would miss the Sonic/Seaga threads on this board)
Personally I am not to fond about the "stages flying over a void" levels. Changing the camera angle and missing that last red coin, falling to the death and repeat it over and over made it a frustrating experience (for me). The "retro levels" felt forced and can't be really compared to classic Mario, because they lack the flow. (Hm how do I get over this? -Insane jump sequence- Stop. Looking at the next obstacle. -Insane jump sequence. Stop. Looking at next target. -Jump- Missed. Falling to death.)
i find funny how nintendo's big 3 on GC got the fanbase angry in one way or another, just because they tried a different approach with each:
Sunshine-eh? no mushroom kingdom? a waterpack?
Wind Waker-moar liek Celda
Metroid Prime-what? a FPS that doesnt play like halo?
This trend doesn't seem like it'll change any time soon, just look at all the bitching about Twilight Princess not being Wind Waker now that Wiihype has normalized. Although I remember the MP complaints mostly being in the "3d Metroid?? That's gonna suck, they're turning it into a first person shooter!" sense.
I bought this at launch, and it quickly became one of the few games I've ever traded in. I mean, most of it was alright, but it had way too many bits that were frustrating as all hell.
The one part that comes to mind especially is that sublevel where you ride on the back of a giant bird made out of blocks. I mean, what the fuck was that?
That said, I rebought Mario Sunshine a week or two ago, so I guess I'll give it another chance.

Man, I really don't get what people see in Mario World. I mean, it's a great game, but by Mario standards it doesn't really seem up to par. It's the worst of the best.
NES Marios all the way.
You know, after playing through Super Mario World again this year, I can't but agree with this statement. The game is ... lacking something that makes a good Mario game.
Mario Sunshine however, it was the first GC game I played and oh boy I loved it. Then again, I'm all over 3D Jump'en Runs.
I'm so glad I saw this thread, I was just talking with my roommate about this game today.
I like SMS and M64 about equally. 64 seemed like there was a lot more things to do in it, for sure. However, and this may sound funny to you guys, Mario 64 has a lot of parts I absolutely hate playing. For instance, water levels, cave/dungeon levels, etc. I think I have a mental block against them because I hated them as a kid.
SMS, on the other hand, is complete fun. Levels are sunny and sillier, it just seems happier to me.
I reaaly don't understand the bitching about lack of a reason to get all the shines... How about because they're there? For the challenge? For the fun?
I 100%ed the game and loved it all the way. The blue coins were pretty dman ridiculous at times and ended up being GameFAQed.
The last shine I got will remain with me for a long time however. It was that one which involved jumping the amazing dissolving Yoshi from boat to boat across the sea to a pipe (difficult enough as it was) and then riding the rapidly dissolving leaf down the poison rapids trying to snatch red coins as you went. Miss one and it was a highly taxing tightrope walk over infinite space for a second shot.
Sooooo many attempts. So much swearing at the TV. Such satisfaction at managing it.

I remember that one. It was awesome.
It was the one point in the game that it seemed like Yoshi had a reason to die in the water; to make the trip to that island so frustratingly scary. I liked it.
I never played Sunshine until a couple months before the Wii came out. I saw it used or something for 12ish bucks and snagged it.
I would kill my mother for a Mario game with nothing but those secret levels. Screw a story, call it "Mario: VR Missions" and give me some freaking awesome platforming bliss*.
*By bliss I mean crotch-punchingly frustrating and insanely hard.

See, I managed to do that first time. Collected all the red coins and everything. Pure fluke obviously, but I did it easily.
Then, a while ago, I restarted Sunshine, and got up to that, and for the life of me I cannot do it. After many many many many goes i abandned it, i'm still up to that shine now, but I haven't been back since.
This game was an obsession when it first came out. I got all the shines, and then traded it in. I had devoted so much time to it, I couldn't see myself ever needing to play it again. I miss it badly. I should go find it used.
How come no one has mentioned the badass shirt and sunglasses Mario gets for getting 100%?
With that sandbird it's just a case of remembering which way it tilts! When I was playing Shadow of the Colossus I came up against a similar enemy and couldn't help but try to find the red coins!
Anyway, I absolutely love this game. I didn't really get in to Mario 64 when it first came out due to the lack of an N64. I've since rectified that but I really do prefer Sunshine. There are some parts I hated; The races on the back of those...things on the water, collecting the blue coins, yoshi hating water, the above mentioned fruit collection... but in the main it was a superb game that I may now have to go back to.

Aside from a terrible application of Yoshi (a FLUDD clone doesn't do him justice), I like Sunshine a lot.
Maybe it made things easier, but I loved hovering while platforming. It just felt so smooth. The secret levels (and accompanying music) rocked hard. The camera system where hidden things became shadows was a huge step up, as was the new wall-jumping mechanic (never could wall-jump reliably in Mario 64). I also loved the "dash around at breakneck speed" nozzle.
I'm not a fan of the blue coins (buying Shines feels wrong) or popping balloons on that roller coaster. Too first person-y for me. And I would agree that the game is too hard.
I can get behind the idea of a entire game based around the special levels with no water-pack. That would be fun. Power ups could be cool if they found a way to implement them in a 3d enviroment. I always thought Mushrooms should fill your health. That makes more sense than coins filling your health to me.
I'll admit I got discouraged by the difficulty. The spinning pirate ships made me put it down. Not so much because it was difficult but because it went from easy-average to off the charts hard in no time at all. The game wasn't too hard but the design in terms of progression sucked in my personal opinion.
I didnt have a problem with fludd though. i do think its funny how people wonder how a mushroom eating plumber who saves princesses could ever be gimmicky.
I loved the game. Never found it annoyingly difficult. There were some points (while trying to collect everything) that were tough, but nothing that made me want to put the game down forever. I do have to say that my favorite part of the game was the Yoshi's. More specifically that they projectile vomited juice, my friend almost pissed himself from laughing at that.

I generally prefer Mario 64, perhaps for purely nostalgic reasons, but I much prefer the tightness of the controls in Sunshine. The thing that had me stop playing was actually getting stuck and not knowing where to go. I was in the hotel level and I literally just did not know where to get the next shine. I'm jumping through ceilings and going through hidden doorways in this maze of a level and I just did not know where to go. I couldn't find anymore levels to go to either so I was stuck there and I just gave up. Maybe it was just me but I don't like getting stuck not knowing where to go in a Mario game.
One interesting thing which I noticed is that when Delfina Plaza is flooded, it's still possible to take Yoshi all the way to the enterance of Corona Mountain, although you need to use almost every tree and rooftop to make it over. In fact, it seems like the Plaza was specifically designed to allow you to do this.
You don't get anything out of it, Yoshi is gone when the level loads.

I got stuck for AGES before looking up in to the light that shines down on the courtyard!
Good to see other people share my love for Super Mario Sunshine. Whenever I bring it up in conversation as one of the greatest marios, people scowl at me. Why the disdain for this mario?!?!
The setting was my favorite part. I remember renting this game on a hot responsibility free summer day and wanting to be nowhere but Delfino. This game also made me very thirsty.

Ever play Mario 64? I knew exactly what to do when I saw that light, but it was unfair to rely on the knowledge of the prior game to know what to do on that part.
But goddamn those bird...things....that flip you in the air when you go near them. Particularly in the push-the-watermelon-down-the-beach shine. Made me so angry.

Just kill a bunch of them first. You can get rid of them by luring them over to a Dune Bud and then launching them into the air.

I couldn't figure that out either. I had to look it up to get beyond that point in the game. It's one of my many shameful secrets. I never played Super Mario 64, so maybe that's my excuse.

Don't know if somebody mentioned it, but one of the things I loved was how you can belly slide without breaking momentum. Not just using the water pack but tapping the B button repeatedly to just belly-slide-hop to the destination.
I'll never get tired of Mario's little "doo... hup... hup..." whenever I do that.
Cleaning up goo was not fun. The platforming levels with no water backpack were great. Thus, the game would've been better without Fludd.
I disagree, I quite enjoyed killing the manta ray with Fludd. Also, I liked many of the moves Fludd made possible, like spinning around on ropes, swimming and running really fast, jetpacking my way around if I missed a jump, etc.
