I'm not spoilering myself on the routes yet, so this applies to what I think is the right>right route, but solo WAR doesn't need any of the special actions. The heal action came in handy when learning the last boss mechanics, but if you're able to figure it out a little faster than I did, you probably won't need it.
What else are you gonna take though? Spirit dart is oGCD so it's free DPS, and then?
My WAR is 30 lol, the only tank I have at 90 is GNB.
I'm not sure off the top of my head what my GNB's iLVL is, I think it might be around 595? Mostly Troian, Abyssos chest, Moonward gunblade (the weakest of the lot; grinding out raid weps sucks) My DRG is the one that's actually kitted out proper, in mostly Lunar Envoy, + augmented whatever the last tier hat was, + one Abyssos ring.

DPS solo isn't too hard imo, you're just loosing GCDs to heal yourself. Rampart is oGCD and you want to hit it pretty much on cooldown for the barrier? At least enough to keep the mitigation up. Otherwise, 1500 astronomy tomes buys you a 615 weapon if you're current on Manderville quests.
I did one route solo on unmelded i590 Gunbreaker, another on melded i600 Dancer. The most important things to note is what, exactly, the actions are: the heal is also a strong regen, the 20% defense is also a sizeable barrier, and the AOE DOT is an oGCD. Use the latter two on cooldown.
Don't pull more than one group if solo and don't get hit by the boss mechanics and you're basically home free.
Mind you, "don't get hit by the boss mechanics" is the tricky bit - generally speaking you can probably survive getting hit once as a non-tank, but messing up twice will leave you dead to a tankbuster or raidwide.
The bosses are pretty neat, I like how they have slightly different moves on each route. ...my one group run I was the only one not eating dirt on the last boss to what I thought were easy mechanics.

The dps damage over time action makes it a lot faster though

I already had the 620 for DRG; though actually looking at the stats it's... well it loses 1 base damage, but gains better crit and det, and once melded better dir?
Base damage even more so than primary stat. There are certain rare cases in which a lower-IL armor piece or accessory has much better secondary stats than a higher-IL item with more points in primary stats. I don't think there are any cases in which a lower-IL weapon is better than any higher-IL weapon. Even +1 or +2 to the Weapon Damage or Magic Damage stat is worth that much more than anything else better secondaries can offer.

I took the rez because it was my first time and I didn't know if the guest NPC would be participating in combat. Next time I'll definitely take the DPS.

Yeah, I was more meaning the manderville weapons are reasonable options for alt classes (in this case if they were wanting to upgrade GNB gear). 1500 astronomy is kind of something you just end up with anyways, even if it's not as stupid cheap as the last time with 1k poetics.

Pro tip: you can change them during the run.
WHERE. HOW.
Probably by opening the window for the dungeon again? You can check the logs mid-dungeon since some of them have hints on reaching other routes.
What's the best setup for trying these solo? I attempted solo yesterday, starting as DRG but swapping to GNB before realizing that the default skills they give you are useless for soloing (I really don't think I need enmity generation if I'm by myself...)
I got as far as the default right-right boss before just getting tired of smashing my face against it and dying all the time. I just got bored.
I only used DPS roles when solo, but I did various routes on Red Mage, Samurai, and Summoner. All you need is the skill that reduces damage taken and the cure, although I was able to get through a run without the former skill on my first run when I didn't know what I was doing. Of those classes, Summoner felt the best for this by a landslide. Good AOE for mobs (bahamut and phoenix just maul packs), good mobility for being able to continually damage bosses while doing mechanics. Occasionally having to cure doesn't hurt their rotation much, and isn't necessary very often anyway thanks to their self-shield and the regen from Phoenix (unless you get hit by avoidable things, of course). It was a pretty smooth experience in general.
craftable from rare materials that were added to level 90 treasure map loot, probably. That's usually where new crafted fashion gear comes from. It'll be super expensive on the marketboard for a while, and probably normalize at around 500k-1m gil in a month
just looked up the model on the marketboard, somebody's already making a columbo alt to use it I bet
oh I was wrong the materials for the trenchcoat set are from the sildahn subterrane apparently?
still crafted though

It's not crafted, you get potshards from the dungeon and turn those in to a vendor.
who or what is the weird all-black figure that turns up in the closing scenes? I skipped most of the cutscenes of the previous quests so I remember seeing them once before but I have no idea what's going on there

The all black figures are just stand-ins, meant to represent a shadowy figure that you aren't meant to know the identity of. The models used are *not* representative of the mystery figure.

they're kind of a reference to the unrevealed culprit standin shadowy figures from the extremely long-running japanese cultural touchstone detective manga/anime, Detective Conan:
I genuinely get what they're doing story wise with the conspiracy minded "reporter", I do. And I get this has been in design for months.
But after reading two weeks of reporting on how innocent grieving families had their lives ruined by conspiracy theory mongering, my already limited patience for it is now non-existent.

we just had a Dutch politician talk about lizard-people non-ironically. It's never just a weird conspiracy thing with these people, they're absolutely not harmless idiots as portrayed in Hildy.
It's clear ffxiv doesn't bother with current foreign affairs and prefers to harken back to plots from comics, but some stereotypes just don't work well with current knowledge.
I am part way into it, had to take a break after a couple of cut scenes. I really think the whole thing would have been improved if we could have just left that guy behind.
I draw a mental line somewhere between "a little too convinced aliens are real" and "self-interested reality denial" on the conspiracy theory spectrum. This guy easily falls into the former camp. He's also a tedious character to lug around and adds nothing to the quest, but you don't watch Manderville for the character development.

the ENTIRE MAP in Coeurl on Tuesday was talking in /Shout about how badly we wanted to yeet that guy off the moon, we hated him so much. And usually Coeurl is pretty respectful about spoiler stuff in /shout. We were just like, wow, fuck this dude in particular.
Re: new tribal quests
I think I need to go buy the Towels housing item so I can link them in chat and ask if everyone is a hoopy frood and do they know where their towels are.
hildibrand is a detective son of a rich politician. given the modern world its rather tasteless to have us paling around with a trust fund cop. never mind nashus frequent use of improvised explosive devices and the narrative around terrorism in media post-9/11
So I've never done blind progression in Extreme+ content in this game before, since I rarely have a full group of 8 to work with and not everyone is interested in doing that kind of thing. But a group of us decided to do it for the new Criterion dungeon, and boy, I cannot even believe how much fun we've been having. I really pray that they add more content like this in the future, because it's been a blast. I've been recording clips on my PC as we go to see what's going on in mechanics and then streaming them to the other guys in Discord. A wholly new experience for me.
After a few hours yesterday, we're up to enrage of the second boss. In the normal version of the dungeon. I actually can't wait to go back and watch videos to find out some much simpler strategies than the crap we've come up with.
