Constant random USB plug in/unplug noise in Vista, without plugging anything in

Let me preface this by saying that I don't give a flying fuck about anybodies opinion on how crappy Vista is. I enjoy it, and I'm not switching back to XP or Linux, so please keep any such comments to yourselves :)

A couple of days ago I started randomly getting the sound of a USB devide being plugged into the system and then removed. I get no visible alert, and as far as I can tell, all my USB devices continue to function (Logitech G15 gaming keyboard w/ latest drivers, mx518 mouse, and a USB hub - I've tried removing the hub as it's the latest addition to the system, and the noises continue). I also have a media card reader plugged into one of the USB headers on the motherboard.

Anybody have any idea what the hell is going on here? Should I worry less about computer repair and more about an exorcism?

Thanks in advance

This isn't just a Vista issue because I had it happen to my cousin's XP rig a week back. I never got to the bottom of it: I did a bunch of fruitless spyware/virus scans and the problem eventually went away after a few restarts.

But I do admit to disabling the alert sounds in the meantime, heh... they were just getting that annoying.
