Now that I can rent Top Gun: Maverick for a not-exorbitant price, I watched that tonight.
A little heavy on the nostalgia but for the most part they crammed it all into the first 10 minutes so I appreciate that. I'm glad they kept the character stuff pretty barebones. It would have been really easy to just overdo all of it with dialogue but they used a lot of silence letting your brain fill in the gaps. Plus, real people just don't say anything to each other a whole lot. I didn't know about Val Kilmer's health but I figured it wasn't a choice for the movie so I did a little quick googling to read up on that. Apparently he had his voice recreated with AI to save for film work but they didn't use that at all for the film, so kind of the opposite of the shit some studios have done. All of the plane stuff was very cool. I bet those scenes were awesome with a theater sound system. Did not miss out on the intensity though. I kinda found it funny that they did not directly mention who the enemy was at any point but then here's an Su-57 and the iconic Mi-24. I wonder how much influence the US military had in production considering the use of jets and carriers. Obviously the military propaganda is present although I would have expected it to be more in your face. Maybe specifically calling out Russia as the enemy in the present day would be a bad move. But in that case, just create some unique aircraft designs for them, or use something a bit more ubiquitous. Or maybe it just doesn't matter and I'm overthinking it. Anyway, zoom zoom jets are cool.
Technically the unnamed enemy would be Iran I think; Russia doesn't operate F-14s

it's funny! the cat lady gave me feelings! Chris Kattan! that part when Stephen King is in coma world because Cujo stole his body and just kept writing novels!
Because the song just came on, what's the most inappropriate pop song used in a movie? Because "shut up and drive" in Wreck it Ralph ranks pretty high for me.

The first time I watched it, I remember thinking it was fine; it wasn't terrible, it wasn't great, it was mostly just functional despite the charms of Brendan Fraser and the effects team. But then Chris Kattan showed up, and the way he threw his body around for that movie made me lose my shit, breathless and crying with laughter during a markedly depressive period, so I'll forever have a fond spot for Monkeybone just for that sequence.

This is the second time ever Near Dark is available on a streaming service
Went and saw Clerks 3 on Monday. I had no idea what it would be about going in. Was really funny at parts. Actually was funnier than I thought it was going to be. Some parts dragged a bit. Very meta. Surprised at the amount of emotion it was able to get out of me at the end.

They’re talking about The Birds right now.
I have never found The Birds scary at all. It’s one of my least favorite (critically good) movies.

edit: night-time would be incredibly stressful like "OWLS, DUDE, THEY FLY SILENTLY."
