I feel like I can half remember some dialects or other pronouncing it with just the finishing vowel sound of the "regular" pronunciation of road
but I have a strong feeling that this comic is actually about that really common english speaker thing where they really struggle to even hear their diphthongs being diphthongs

I think he was just rushed when he drew this strip. Bubbles' eyes are different colors in the second panel, so I'm chalking the rest up to cartoonist error.
