the oots forums are interpreting it (and the previous strip) as
someone impersonating Julia.
could be, I guess. I don't follow the strip closely enough to have a working knowledge of how Julia is supposed to sound
Redcloak's a cleric, can they do illusions? This would be a pretty good way to get a list of what he's about to be up against.
You could also read it straight, that a sister would simply forget about an important day for her brother and be unwilling to admit it and then jump on the lifeline tossed to her that she was young
Idk, the same thing happens within my family from time to time
In two strips, she hasn't made fun of her brother once. This is pretty out of character for her. Even when they're on good terms, they still use sibling-insults to communicate.
Also
she's been asking a lot of leading questions regarding Roy's plans and situation. Sounds like she's phishing him for info
I reckon Roy is testing her here, for exactly that
Roy is very, very smart, that's his biggest strength really

It would also make Roy really, really, really, really stupid to fall for this right after Durkon and "Durkon"
Roy is what happens when a fighter doesn't take Intelligence as their dump stat.
(Also Kaff Tagon, who keeps surprising people every time he demonstrates it. As a friend put it, Tagon the younger only seems dumb because he aggressively filters incoming information for whether it's relevant to matters of combat and (usually) discards it if it's not.)
I'm also wondering if them dancing around the name Beholder is a response to this D&D OGL malarkey that's going on.
The Beholder is somewhat famously not part of the OGL, actually - OotS even jokes about it in an early strip, where two lawyers come to arrest a non-OGL monster. Might've been an Illithid, I don't remember.
It's a lot of things. Rich might have been inspired to lean on it for a joke because of current news but adventures in this world are written intentionally to have imperfect knowledge of monsters and also it's a running gag that they avoid WotC-specific material.
It's so so important that you use a depressed rat. Folks these days try to get away with gloomy or downtrodden and it's just not the same
That's why I home-grow my own depressed rats! That way you know exactly what they've been through, and honestly, I think they're better than the ones you get at the store.
Sunny veru apecifically has one less eye than beholders do just to be safe
Given Wizards current behaviour it's not the worst idea.
Another RPG webcomic that I read, Rusty and Company, got hit HARD by lawsuits years ago, way before the current kerfuffle. It apparently had to do with these "special" protected monsters, and they didn't have OotS's clout.
But in Sunny's case, it's possible she just had her disintegrate eye removed intentionally or never grew one due to her nature.
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

Pretty sure this is just part of the normal running gag about D&D specific monster names.
