If Thanos was so concerned about overpopulation why'd he make all those clones of himself that one time
Look there’s no ethical genocide under capitalism
Also I never got why thanos was so powerful pre gauntlet. Is that explained in the comics? Was his race all super powerful like that or was he unique in some way? Like why even without the stones was he so strong?
They were all super powered, yes. And he was a mutant offshoot with even more power.
I think he was basically everything in the book, depending on who was telling the story. His race was extremely powerful, he was a mutant, he had a super serum, he had tech augments, he knew magic and he was a supergenius able to augment himself with science shit.

Correct.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Thanos trying to impress and seduce Death is such a wilder and funnier and better motivation than "overpopulation"
Once again I must remind everyone that the reason Thanos did what he did in the comics was because Death explicitly told him that the universe was heading towards a Malthusian apocalypse and he needed to stop it.
Although he really didn't care about that, all he wanted to do was impress her, and even afterward, she wasn't satisfied.
(or maybe was just fed up with him, either/or.)
That said, I found the MCU version a lot more interesting, since he actually seemed to be doing it for a character-driven reason from his backstory(giving him more personality), not just "I want to impress this lady".
But that said, if they'd used the opportunity to pair him up with Hela, I'd have been all for that.
wanting to impress a lady is absolutely a character-driven reason
MCU Thanos is the embodiment of "when all you have is a hammer..."
He'd been doing the "kill 50%" shtick for decades at that point, as shown by the sequence with young Gamora. The end conclusion for the Battle of New York and Ronan's attack on Xandar was probably to line up 50% of survivors and shoot them (well, if Ronan hadn't gone rogue and attempted to destroy the whole planet).
Thanos has been ramping up his tools and armies pretty much his entire adult life so he could get to the "euthanasia" part for each planet faster. Decades later he finds out about the Infinity Stones and sees them as just a bigger hammer. He didn't start with "Hey, it turns out there are these magic stones that control fundamental aspects of the universe - what new solutions do they open up?" He started with "Hey, your 'kill 50%' solution - would these magic stones help?"
It's only when he's confronted by the fact that he already did that, it didn't work, and the stones were the biggest possible hammer, that he reassesses the fundamental "problem" that he is trying to solve.

In the comics, Thanos is a mutant Eternal and was already as strong as they normally are. He has also enhanced himself with various sorceries and cybernetics. He's kind of like Doctor Doom in that way.

It just made way more sense!
I mean if it's overpopulation and you have a magic genie, just wish that birth rates drop until there are half as many people, and then stabilize at that number.
The worst problem of it all is Thanos, even if he WAS right (which he isn't), the dumbfuck didn't put any safeguards in to make sure it doesn't happen again! Just halved all of life (ALL of life, so half of the food supply too, dipshit, wtf?) and figures everyone will go "This is so much better, let's maintain this level of population forever" and not just fuck back up to whatever population they were before in like a hundred years or less (we went from 4 to 8 billion in like six decades).
And you'd think "Well, he'd just use the stones again?"
And Endgame is like "NOPE!"
Killing him was probably a mercy. They could have just let him live on that planet with no means to escape and periodically send him updates on population levels. Just so he knows he offed his daughter for no reason, and destroyed the only possible means of attempting to stop it from happening again.

My favorite theory is the one where destroying half of all life also means destroying half of our gut biomes so after the snap every person in the world would have awful diarrhea
It's the "plan" of a meathead who's sure he has The Answer that no one else has ever had the courage or resolve to go through with.
He's never imagined that much, much smarter people could have considered the problem and realized that his idea wouldn't work.
Is it explicitly stated that it’s all life, or just like sentient life or life above a certain intelligence?
Also you’d hope the wish stones would read his mind palace wish enough to make sure they keep the genders of each species stable, and it’s not like 100% of one gender gone

Only if the gut biomes of the snapped people were not also snapped

"Wanted to impress a lady" was the actual cause of a whole lot of actual wars, why not an Infinity War?
If Cate Blanchett asked me to wipe out half the universe, I'd at least look at my options.
One of many reasons I wished they'd taken that route.

if they'd kept the Death plotline then at least it would have paid off the post-credits line in Avengers about how "to challenge [humans] is to court death."

Yeah, but I would still bully 10 year old Chris Pratt. You can’t take that away from me.
I watched Happy! with a big law and order fan, and everytime Meloni was drunk with his ass out I would make the law and order theme "Bam bah" noise
Ah, but he's still Chris Pratt when Ego shows up later on earth!

For one, did you know that Spielberg is jewish?
okay, but he doesn't have a deep-seated belief in the magic of cinema, right?
