But neither is Twitter. The internet is a shambling mountain of tech debt, slapdash code, and misconfigured implementations. The internet ain’t safe.

the thing about discord is it sucks and it is not a better alternative for anything other than as a chatroom app

Discord is a more user friendly IRC and I am baffled at folks who suggest it’s a viable Twitter alternative

They’re two entirely different kinds of thing! It’s like if when AIM went down you told its users to switch to twitter as a replacement. They just fulfill entirely different styles of communication.

As someone who grew up with AOL chatrooms, IRC, forums, and got heavy into Twitter, discord is like a combination of all of these. Chat rooms are like, only around for the length of the session historically, or you only get to see whatever chat history you were around for, but I've got discords I go to with like 4+ years of posts, that are very good to go back through and read. Yeah if they're in the same channel, they're usually part of the same conversation or responding to each other, but it's not dissimilar from looking at different hashtags. The biggest difference is that you have to get an invite to the server to see shit, but like. That's not a difference between "posting" and "chatting", that's a difference between public and walled garden.

What I'm saying is not that people are doing Twitter "wrong" by customizing it, or that people can't find value in it, but that the value of the platform when curated is eclipsed massively by the harm and badness of the platform in its default state.

By default, everything about Twitter is designed to pump engagement at the harm of the user experience. Quote tweets encourage platforming shitty contrarians to dunk on them, recommendations put the worst algorithmic slop this side of Snapchat's horrible Tiktok feed clone, and harassment of creators is very beneficial and inevitably winds up impacting almost anybody you might care to follow.

There can be some valid use cases for Twitter, and you can potentially evade a lot of this by, apparently, muting certain key phrases and updating this list when they update the site, never using the official app, going to a non-default view setting, etc., but that doesn't change that the overall site was very, very bad and it's fundamentally designed to be bad like that!

E: Also, this isn't some sort of "this forum is great all other social media sucks" thing; if I had to pick my biggest issue with the forum, it'd be how incredibly pathetic it is when people snip at other social media or even other subforums out of some misguided sense of moral superiority.

I signed up for twitter during the "green revolution" time in Iran, in Uhhh 2009.

The "please listen to the alt-right" algorithm did not exist, and everything was followers/chronological order and, to me, all of your complains sound like something you invented to get mad about. They are literally not my experiences on twitter. To people that joined twitter pre-'New Home Screen' which I don't even know when it happened, because it didn't happen to me.

So there is a big disconnect about what people think twitter is. It very much was different for you, but my experience was never your experience. For me it was also, follow some comedians follow some sports follow some news, get fed exactly what you followed.

My experience never showed me Ben shapiro or Jordan Peters on. Its a different thing now, but it never changed for people that used it before the change.

Also I deleted my twitter months ago, so whatever

Yeah, that's why I am skeptical of a lot of CIA conspiracy theories. Those fucks would gladly admit to the most conspiratorial of shit in a heartbeat. They're proud of it. You'd confront them on it, they'd deny it for like 30 seconds before grinning and saying "hell yeah that was us, we flattened the earth so the meerkat-people would be able to tunnel across the earth more easily." Buncha rap snitch knishes is what they are.

And they know that, by admitting to it, nothing will happen and the conspiracy-heads would just say that someone else did it.
