We live in the 60-70 band pretty much constantly this time of year. Even with the dehumidifier it doesn't seem possible to get it below 60%. We are right on the coast though; I think it's just Like That here.

I maybe haven't adjusted to being in darkest Fife

It doesn't help that the glazing is shit so there's constantly water running down the windows and pooling on the sills

This house sounds very 1970s by the description of your woes

Ours is a council house from the early 80s and we have all of these problems. We had our double glazing done last year and they popped the old wooden frames out with their hands more or less, they were so flimsy and degraded.

As japan said there was absolutely zero consideration given to air flow management at the time. I tend to close everything up at night to retain what heat we can and open the windows about midday to let out some of the humidity. I've given up trying to use the storage heaters for any meaningful temperature regulation

i bought a massive north face parka when i was going to alaska in march and it turns out anchorage was warmer than dublin most days i was there

i used it like twice over the 10 day trip and one of those times was when we went on a whale watching cruise by some glaciers

i've used it a couple of times over the last few days but honestly i've found myself sweating in sub-freezing temps with it on

    north face aren't fucking around

    Quite fond of corduroy

Need to make sure it's not cotton, though, since that's just a variation on the theme of denim

In practice my usual tactic is to give up on staying dry and use next to skin layers that still insulate when wet. I do walk the dog in jeans but I'll wear 3/4 length insulated running tights under them

Apparently some of the snow clearing machines were struck by the snow-lightning yesterday. There’s no further details but that seems like a message.

That was weird yesterday, I was just about to go to bed and I looked outside just to check how much it was snowing, and the whole sky lit up because it was so overcast and the light from the flash scattered across the entire sky.

Yeah it was super cool, I sure haven’t seen that before.

    same

    or, like

we are at that part of winter - it's not unreasonably hot to wear. It's comfy. I can always just lose a jacket.

But we haven't been at that part of winter long enough. I'm not ready to admit to myself and god that okay it really is winter.

I mean for just like going around on daily business, or going out to bars, wherever

when I will be wearing regular clothes and not like Winter Gear because it is a normal day

but also yes I second what Japan is saying - it was drilled into me from a very, very young age that for snow and cold, cotton is satan

The parallel universe to the wisdom of layering up for different weather is kit like https://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/ - You wear one insanely insulated but breathable 'shirt' and just accept you'll be damp but warm for a bit before it wicks everything away.

That website hasn't changed a bit since I used it around 2010ish, hah.

Looking at it, I think in practice it's a set of integrated layers assembled as one garment

No reason it shouldn't work, but the idea of your "jacket" being a next to skin layer would take some getting used to

oh actually that's something to put on the christmas wish list, brynje netting:

    https://nymag.com/strategist/article/brynje-wool-mesh-long-underwear.html

an exception to the wool only rule but for real this stuff is brilliant

how we dressed in the army was this undernearth, the gore tex uniform as the outer layer, add stuff in between depending on temp and activity level

(with the wool thermal underwear being on the thicker side - this stuff being much better at being a lighter layer than thinner thermal underwear is)

Don’t get me wrong, I am still woefully naive about relationships

But i’m pretty sure that’s coming across. I just don’t want anyone thinking that I think I got it all figured out.

I think youre a good person but it is mysterious to me that you have such optimism about the human condition vis a vis forethought and self control and rationality, given your job and all?

Like to have such a high opinion as a daily face to face interaction person

Idk, at my job I’m quite pessimistic because I hear the same story every time.

In the romance department, I guess I’m still the person who believes that when you seek to be with only one person, you are only with that person and if you begin to get tempted by others, you aren’t happy with the person you’re with and need to let that person go before people get hurt and reflect.

in like, the traditional having a mistress kind of cheating, someone might actually be perfectly happy with having their wife and family and what they get out of having a mistress is something different

    which I sort of understood

I do remember my dad talking about a colleague of his who had one family in stavanger and another in aberdeen, which was just confusing. Like, you don't have someone on the side, you just doubled up on mortgages and PTA meeting and everything?

Right but with a mistress, why not just open the relationship instead? It reeks of the whole “i think you’ll be here if this other thing doesn’t work out and i want to make sure of that by taking away your options”

Like those classic reddit threads where partner A opens a relationship with partner B to actually be with partner C, but once partner B starts getting action, and the thing between A and C lapses, A finds the whole thing “unfair” and wants to close the relationship on B.

Long term relationships (like, decades, or a lifetime) with a single person and never banging anyone else: they’re difficult

People cheat for a wide variety of reasons. Happy people do, unhappy do as well. Many people do it because they’re partner doesn’t want an open relationship and they don’t have much sex at home anymore, but they don’t want a divorce. Some people have a healthy and fun sex life and decide to smash other people anyway, for a wide variety of reasons

It’s complicated! People change over the decades and people are often hostile to the idea that sexual desire changes, so they don’t talk about it. And it’s difficult for 2 people to fulfill the breadth and width of sexual desire for each other for 40-60 years or what have you. It’s not impossible by any means, but it requires a lot communication and honesty, something married people are often very bad at

I also think cheating being an automatic extinction level event for a marriage is not a good idea. I don’t think it’s even in the top 5 of the worst things you can do to a married partner (long term secret affairs can be really bad though), but our culture is obsessed with how bad infidelity is, while also encouraging it at every turn. I would much rather find out my husband had sex with someone on a business trip than realize he’s spent all our money due to a gambling addiction, or secretly took out credit cards in my name and maxed them out, or has been poisoning me or something

Our discourse as a society on the subject is really bad. When it was revealed that jay-z had affairs, people were like “imagine cheating on someone as hot as beyonce” and that seems to willfully misunderstand the reasons someone would cheat!

I accidentally half-read a work email yesterday afternoon and it fucked up my whole evening because I interpreted it as me getting a rather basic calculation wrong, which would have meant a grovelling conciliatory email to a customer

Turns out I was just trying to effect a change through the wrong internal process, so it's fixed by me sending a different form

    Whee, what a roller coaster

Yeah it wasn't meant to make you too warm - it had zip vents in a few places for thermoregulation. The pile lining stuff that kept you warm also very effectively wicked moisture away whatever the source, and so it didn't need to be properly waterproof.

As a concept it did work, and I know some people who love it. You and Japan have both touched on why it is a bit niche, and why I got rid in the end - it was irritating to regulate as I was constantly fiddling with the zips, and I never got used to the next-to-body aspect.

That mesh stuff looks interesting, should I ever have to kit myself out again.

I finally got off my lazy ass and washed my wool blanket yesterday and my overalls so I can do some more work outside.

The wool blanket dried before nightfall, so I slept VERY well (it's an old (I think) wool blanket from somewhere in the middle east, based off the tag, and it's just the standard OD military green.) I've had it like 10 years now and it's lived outdoors with me at times.

The overalls desperately needed a wash and still have some caked on mud I'm gonna have to dig out.
