Advent Calendar Thread

Hey guys!! It's 24 + x days until Christmas and you know what that means. Time to open a little box and/or square and/or wrapper a day and find a little surprise inside!

Anyone get any cool or weird Advent Calendars? Want to share what you got with the class every day until Christmas?

A local ice cream lady has been making ice cream advent calendars the last few years, and I managed to get one of the pre-orders someone forgot to pay for. One single serving of ice cream a day, and she'll be posting on her Instagram what each flavour is to match. Very excited for this.

I got a canvent calendar thing.

It’s a liquor store in Victoria with an online presence and they’ve been doing it (that I know about) for like six years, and they’re all one off/test beers by breweries around the country. It’s fun cause you know there are a bunch of people trying the same beer that day.

oh! we got the bonne maman jam advent calendar last year and it was delightful, though at the end we had quite a lot of toast and jam to get through.

we're still using the little 1oz jars for various small things.

I did the advent calendars as a kid, but it's a habit that's fallen off as an adult. I guess there's more than the ones with the little chocolates in them nowadays? Neat.

I've never had an advent calendar

Dunno where you'd even get something like that

    But I barely celebrate Christmas

In the last 4 or 5 years or so there've been a lot of little trendy ones coming out

Inquisitor mentioned a sake one, I've seen makeup and perfume ones, local chocolate shops have made their own advent calendars with fancy truffles and such, lots of fun varieties!

It turns out having a little daily ritual where you get surprised with some small nice thing you like is fun

Advent calendars were never a thing for me as a kid, so that hasn't been a thing I've ever considered for myself as an adult either.

For our kiddo's first Christmas we got my mother a wooden advent calendar house that she could fill with whatever to do with her grandchild. Man, she liked the idea but could never be bothered to actually put in any effort, I always had to collect everything to put in it so they'd at least still have the shared holiday ritual.

Even that only lasted a few years, now I just get her one of the Lego calendars they can open together.

I feel like the only one that actually puts in any effort for Christmas in the family here. I most of the time have to get myself something and wrap it or I wouldn't get anything either. Maybe I should try and find one for myself this year.

Do they make premade cocktail Advent calendars?

    I'd try that

    Yes

Although this particular one is German, but there should be American, too, I guess

Some local distilleries might have 'em too, or at least just small sized liquor flavours

I know one of my favourites, a moonshine/gin/vodka/etc company, has a little 12 day one they're putting out

We do two “advent calendars” for our kid Nod. One is a traditional one with numbered doors. We use that one for Christmas activities. So stuff like going to get a Christmas wreath/tree, or going to local Christmas shows, or even just decorating or breaking out specific Christmas toys, or even just listening to Christmas music (if we’ve had a rough day). Just to make sure we do something Christmas like every day with them. The second “calendar” is a box of books (individually hidden in cloth bags) that Nod gets to pull one from every day.

I have played a few of the Exit “escape room in a box” type things, and it turned out they made an advent calendar last year (which I missed) and a different one for this year (which I managed to grab).

So that’s what I’ll be starting up in a few days.

It is day one, it’s a cryo neipa. Nice, decent hop levels with low resin flavours.

Also in this photo is my elaborate setup to hide each can. I get the can out of the box without looking at it, put it behind me, place one stubby holder on it then place another on top so I can place it in the fridge for the next day.

I friend I visited over Thanksgiving is going to be sending me a beer advent calendar, as he got two from his job. Trying to decide whether I want to get caught up over a single evening or if I should pace myself.

My plan is if I miss any days, they get saved for the 25th.

    I am pleased.

Last night's flavour? Nutella! With some Nutella cookies in it which I didn't even know was a thing!

My previous advent calendars have all been chocolates that I inhale immediately after waking up, so it's kind of a nice change to have it be a nightcap I look forward to all day instead

Ikea advent calendar: day one was a vanilla truffle. I forgot yesterday's. I haven't done an advent calendar in forever!

    So, chocolate for breakfast!

Oh... yay. Coconut nougat. (I do not like the texture of coconut.) ..Oh well! Day 3 awaits.

Yesterday: strawberry! Apparently the most requested milkshake base this year. It tasted a lot like those strawberry and cream hard candies that old people give you (when I personally prefer Werthers but hey, free candy!!)

Today will apparently be vanilla chai! Option to include it in a cup of tea is suggested. (I will probably just inhale the ice cream, frankly.)

I used to munch on shredded coconut from the bag when I found it in the pantry after my mother finished her baking spree

I hated the texture of shredded coconut. It's like chewing paper.

Then I went to the Philippines and had fresh buko. Delicious
