I could see certain industries being too busy during the Christmas season to actually stop working for even one second, so they wait until the lull in January to actually have a party with all employees.

Sounds like a type of plan - in the u.s. it's a long, hard slog until the next holiday. Throw in a little late Christmas.
I'm gonna retake the maintenance test in two weeks. I didn't give myself a lot of time because I was adamant I wasn't going to go back on swingshifts.
Buuuuut that was before I found out that troubleshooters got a general raise, plus the $2 an hour shift premium and are now the highest paid people on the floor. Once you get your level certifications you make $93,000 a year. In fact, all the dayshift maintenance are pissed because they cap out at like $80K and get called at home and have to come in and do shit and make less than the troubleshooters who do their 12 and then leave. They're actually leaving their jobs to go back to shift troubleshooting.
So I dunno, that might be worth going back on swings. I could be pretty comfortable just shy of $100K a year here. Assuming I can pass the test this time.

Also, think how much cheaper venue rentals are in January versus trying to book something when the rest of the country is. Why they might even be able to give out TWO free drink tickets
I assume, based on my friends who actually have company parties. We have at best an hour in the large conference room with some "party trays" from the grocery deli paid for by the manager
It is much cheaper to rent out an event hall for ~400 people in the middle of January than it is in December.
I'm mostly considering not going because I have a lot of overtime I have to work around then, and I'll be damned if I'm going to show up for a work event on one of my few days off this month.

I am currently a contractor at a major tech firm. Before thanksgiving I was told by my agency that the firm I work at is obligated to provide 40 hours of work a week, so I am to always put in at least 40 hours of work in my timesheet, even if the building closes for a holiday.
This morning, as I am getting into the car to head in after having last week and yesterday off, I get a text from my contact at the contracting firm. "Regarding last weeks shutdown, I was actually on pto for all of December (nice, right?) and am just getting back up to speed. I don't believe you were supposed to submit hours for that week. Please contact your manager and ask what their plan is regarding billing through that break."
First off motherfucker, I get zero pto so no, not nice. Second, isn't that your job?
Just 3 more months and I can start talking about being an employee instead of contractor...
First day on the new team and in the standup they asked if I had any updates.
I’m very glad this team doesn’t do camera on for standup because I don’t think I kept a cool face.
Anyway I’ve now tagged several people to get them to update my time cards, and teams access, and set me up on the new teams sprint boards and all the stuff I assumed they were supposed to do.
But otoh I don’t actually have anything to do so it’s an ok easing back

While performing the classic "copy and edit someone else's final proposal" rather than starting a new one from scratch, I fell for the other classic " 'final' word version does not match actual final proposal sent out."
Guess it's time to re-review everything that appeared sometimes between the "final" word and the FINAL pdf.

I hate, on so many levels, that we introduced this vpn as a critical single point of failure to our financial system. Especially at times like now, when we're experiencing upwards of 40% packet loss.
My supervisor scheduled a team lunch for our region of the district today.
I'm drowning in all the stuff that needs doing the day after break before students return tomorrow, so I was already considering bailing on it.
It was scheduled for a local sandwich place I like, and it's a one block walk away. So I figured, well, I gotta let these progress bars chug a bit, might as well run over real quick. So I do.
Nobody there? They actually picked a location a 15 minute drive away? Definitely not going now.
The last day of my current job is Jan 20. The first day of my new job is Jan 23. I haven't taken more than 2 days between jobs in almost a decade. I want to be excited for the new gig, but honestly I'm just so tired

:bro:
That's tough, gotta negotiate a bigger window. That said - I feel you. All my moves have been internal because we're enormous, which means no breaks and I continue to get pinged for past stuff.
so at work we learned something. if you don't tighten the bolts properly around the steam box of a small steam-driven boiler, and then you put steam to it, that steam just blasts out into the room.
huh, who knew. who could have known. such a complicated concept.

I made that mistake going from an abusive shit job to a good, hopefully non shit job (Morgan Freeman narration: It was also a shit job.) but part of why that one flopped so hard was I had less than a week, and a multi-state move in between the two. I was just so burnt out when I started, and there was no reason I couldn't just have pushed my start date back a month.
Of course it was losing that job and spending a few months out of work that put me in the position to get my current awesome job that I've been in for the past six years, so...

This.
This right here is why I was thrilled to be laid off with severance package. I was already done with what I was doing - the unique problems were solved, the innovation was being moved to another team that I really didn't trust personally - but I so needed to take some time to just breathe.
I had even applied to a couple places prior to knowing about my RIF status (failed those interviews spectacularly, btw, because I suck), but had I got an offer, I would have definitely been in the same mental state as the bolded - exciting new technology/problems to tackle, but also.. tired. so tired.

Alright well I didn’t do anything today. Hung out in a couple meeting calls. Settled in and read a little. Scrum master responded to my morning ping about all the admin stuff I wasn’t added to at 4:40 said they’d take care of it
I have an empty ketchup bottle, what sauce can I make to put inside?
My go-to is some form of burger sauce.
My normal recipe is something to the effect of…
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup mayo
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Adjust the ratio of mayo to ketchup to your preference and just whisk it all together. Feel free to toss in any other spices you like and have on hand. I actually usually toss in a half teaspoon of MSG when I make it.

How does one even get msg? I never see it for sale anywhere.
You can often find it in asian supermarkets, but a cheap hack is to buy prepackaged ramen or udon noodles and grab the flavour packets, they're like 80% msg and 20% other stuff.
How does one even get msg? I never see it for sale anywhere.
I bet you do, actually! In the spice section in most US supermarkets it’s often sold under the name “Accent” in red and white bottles with no mention of “MSG” except in the ingredient list because the American market is terrified of MSG because racism.
Edit - this stuff:
But yeah, as Tynic pointed out, you can usually get it cheaper (as with most spices) at any Asian grocery. Or from Amazon, if all else fails.

Yep, I bought MSG for my wife for Christmas. A bag of it from the local asian market. I partially bought it as a joke, but also like... I cooked chicken with it the day after Christmas instead of salt and the flavor was just so different. Absolutely worth.

This is nominally related to work, since I listen to music on Youtube while working. Lately I've been in an REM mood, listening to some of the songs I was addicted to in high school, and I had to pause and wonder for a second: Michael Stipe didn't turn into a fascist like Morrissey did, did he? I was so concerned I looked it up and no, he's a vegetarian socialist. In Georgia. Good man.
I hope any time Morrissey walks down the street, people sing his lyrics back at him: There are some bad people on the rise! There are some bad people on the rise! They're saving their own skins by ruining people's lives! Bad, bad people on the rise!

I guess, but.. I'm not sure why. Making soy sauce or a fermented bean paste makes sense, but just msg seems silly when I can buy a bag of it on the cheap.
I know about soy sauce as my brother was quite annoyed his fav one disappeared during the pandemic and has yet to return so since then he has tried 5 other ones {we eat a lot of rice}
So he may have to make his own
The other problem is the Asian market is on the other side of town {so is Chinese food} so riding my bike to it is a no go since it was a not fun journey the only time I did it. I do want Chinese food just lacking a car makes that a quest in itself
I talked about it in the last minutes before the threads came up in the holiday thread
It's gone totally to hell at work as they are scheduling people for extra days or half shifts on their weekends to cover the hemorrhaging
The overturn rate is so bad at work they are using people who have been there for less than two weeks to train new people and the managers are not making sure both know what they are doing
They have locked off PTO to prevent people from taking days off from overnights
It doesn't help from the 10th-24th of last month I was at work in some fashion getting christmas off and back for 6 more in a row really made a mess out of me mentally

The chef steps one uses dehydrated mushrooms. I find it’s got a much richer, deeper flavour than just regular MSG. Definitely I use both, but if I’m feeling like a fancy lad, the homemade stuff is strictly better

So, so tired this morning. Usually I wake up before my alarm and wait for it to go off, while today I was rudely shaken out of a deep sleep by blaring noise. Feels like swimming out of a quicksand soaked in molasses.
Does not bode well for today.
