ironically when you are making eye contact on a video call you're actually looking at someone's picture on the monitor and not at the camera, so it appears that you're not making eye contact
I assume that is what the nvidia eye faking thing is actually about
That's why you never trust anyone who makes eye contact in a video call. They're ignoring your face to cultivate the appearance of attentiveness, the snakes.
I ended up accusing the innkeeper's wife for the murder, as she had motive, means, opportunity, and no alibi. I wasn't able to get the total truth about Guy but I don't see how Otto could have known that he was embezzling from the abbey, so I don't see any reason for Guy to risk killing him. Plus Guy has consistently acted as a self-serving coward. Sneaking into town in the middle of a festival to hunt down and murder one man is so beyond what he seems capable of it's ludicrous. Likewise, considering all the testimonials about 'Martin' it seems difficult to believe he'd kill Otto. He gets angry when he's drunk but for someone to kill Otto in the manner he died it would require some amount of forethought and a sober head. When confronted about his past he even went so far as to say he'd be willing to admit to his deceit, but not murder.
I didn't find any other suspects so I went with the only one that seemed plausible. Fuck that went bad though. Fuck.

Or they put googly eyes on their laptop next to their camera (which was actual advice offered when we all went remote at the start of the WFH pandemic era).

Those are the three, yeah.
I went with Guy myself, because he's a fucking asshole (and you can find a bit more evidence on Otto knowing about the embezzlement scheme), but honestly I barely investigated the other two once I realized Guy was an option. So maybe Andreas wasn't such a good person after all.

But then your laptop won't close properly. Which I demand to do at the end of the day.
Apple devices have been faking eye contact in video calls for years, and "correcting" eye contact in selfies before that. It's still relatively easy to get it to erase parts of my glasses when I take selfies. My significant other's phone smooths her skin in photographs. Everything is fake and nothing is trustworthy.

I finally started playing Vampire Survivors
1. yikes, instant addiction
2. does the eye-strain/slight headache go away once I get used to the game? I turned off flashing effects, but still feeling a little queasy after playing it. It might stop once I get used to it, like Guitar Hero or other visually demanding games.
took it very slow and carefully on phase two; only responded to the side stabs and a couple of the weird jumps. Messed up a few times, and had to use a resurrection, but it's done.
Somebody was talking about it in the holiday forum, and then when I opened my laptop I saw there had been some big updates since last I played, so now I am also playing some Caves of Qud.
First character, a psychic bird person dual-wielding revolvers, was killed by a plant or something in Red Rocks, as most of my characters typically are.
Now I'm playing a four-armed, slime-spitting, corrosive gas farting brawler in one of the new game modes that allows checkpoint reloading so I can actually see more of this wacky game for once.
Might even make it to Qud for possibly the first time ever!
Good on them for adding options besides permadeath. I love permadeath, but not in games where the story or map doesn't change. It just means I repeat the same quests/areas over and over every time I die to some random bullshit, and that quickly stops being fun. Can't tell you how many times I've agreed to investigate Red Rocks for the mayor of Joppa, only to get there and die immediately.
that's a weird lookin' controller, but neat! makes sense that a controller designed for proper accessibility would look weird to someone like me who's used to The Old Ways

Chimera+max random mutations is always a fun time. Likewise, using the mind control spell and then killing your original body let's you play as any creature you can can mind control. Some of them are busted strong.

And subtitles you can turn on before the game starts (though they're getting better about this one!).
while i like it headsfalloff on twitter has a good take that i do agree with, which is that it is preposterous to out one side of your mouth praise accessibility and work towards it and on the other lockout all the various third party tools from being used on their system, and requiring you to purchase accessories - not cheap ones! - directly from them instead
I did it! I beat a game (Midnight Suns) this year!
I'm not even 100% I beat any games last year, though I played a couple to a great extent that might not have technically been beatable. like Vampire Survivors and Star Valor.
Oh wait, no, I did beat Hardspace.
I mean really a tonne of people can’t, it’s like number 2 Wishlisted on steam. It’s unfortunate but I never really thought ign of all places would be where any sort of engagement or pushback on it comes from
Also yeah midnight suns was great, my surprise fav of the year
Would love for the myths about eye contact to fucking evaporate, my ND ass would love that.
what kind of myths?
One of the big ones for me is the idea that if a person can't maintain eye contact it's because they're lying or hiding something. Was not a helpful thing to have in mind when I was growing up and realized I am really bad at maintaining eye contact
I remember an episode/scene from Lie to Me where someone was like "but don't liars try to avoid eye contact", and the show's 'lie expert' was like "nah, they make more eye contact - they need to see that the lie is being believed".
I have no idea if that's true either, it's probably not, it's probably not all that related at all, but I remember really liking that throwaway line as someone who also has trouble making eye contact.
God damn death stranding on gamepass pc is so fucking broken. Crashes all the time, even crashed my whole computer, just boom completely off and restart

Likely too late now, but it was one of the free Christmas EGS games, might work better there?
I had a few games that were outliers like that over the last year, including the odd complete crash. Would only happen with (iirc) Ancestors, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Gardens Between. Nobody else seemed to report the issue.
my last note on the subject had me moving the video card to another slot. Dunno if that's applicable in your case, but thought I'd mention it.

I’ve actually got the steam version, but was feeling like a replay and my main platform is Xbox, so thought I’d grab achievements. But that looks like it won’t be an option. Never had a single issue with the steam version
I’m reinstalling it and there’s some recommendations to turn down some streaming setting in the game so I’ll try that when it installs. If it keeps happening I’ll just give up on the replay, just frustrating. Especially since total warhammer 2 achievements are still broken on the Xbox pc thing, they’ve been broken since launch for everyone and there hasn’t been a peep about it from the devs
EA says 60 percent of corrupted ‘Madden NFL 23’ franchise save files are gone for good
If you tried to log into franchise mode during a server problem last week, your data is likely corrupted.
EA gave Madden NFL 23 players an unwanted gift last week: corrupted save files. The publisher said on Saturday that anyone who tried to access the game’s Connected Franchise Mode (CFM) during a server outage has a 60 percent chance of losing their saved data forever.
The initial server issues occurred on Wednesday, December 28th and stretched into the following day. As a result, EA says files were corrupted for anyone who logged into franchise leagues during that period. (Save files should be unaffected for anyone who didn’t.) Unfortunately, EA’s development team estimates it will only recover 40 percent of the corrupted franchises.
Making matters worse, EA tweeted on December 28th that “users should now be able to play CFM without issue” — three days before delivering the bad news about lost saves. After apologizing, it encouraged affected gamers to “start a new franchise as the mode is up and running.” The publisher also directs customers to follow the Madden franchise account on Twitter for further updates.

Is Madden as laden with micro transaction bullshit as FIFA’s online mode is? And does that lose them their micro transactions?

That was me! I haven’t talked anymore about it because I’ve been, uh, playing it. And painting Battletech, but that’s a different thread. Roleplay mode is definitely The Way; only checkpointing at settlements still makes adventuring quite dangerous and punishing, but instead of losing an entire character you just might lose an hour or two.
I’ve made enough progress in Qud that talking about what I’m up to is spoiler territory. But I have seen THINGS and have been to PLACES.
Survival past the early stages has become a non-issue for me. I’m still using the Gunwing preset as it is one of the safest ways to play I’ve found so far, so long as the ammo holds out. My problem though is I’m pretty solidly in mid game and I’m not finding good enough equipment to replace what I had, so I think I need to spend some time to wander the map and find places to dig up treasure and villages to find better vendors. Six Day Stilt delivers on everything but equipment at this point.
