What's with the obsession with the Underground map though? I can see it if it were a logo for a new tube station being opened for the Olympics or whatever, but to focus in so completely on such a minor aspect of a city seems odd to me.

It's meant as an abstract representation of the city itself, not as a reference to the subway system. Basically it's a map that says 'this is London' but without all the clutter that a street map would provide.

The design itself is also one of the best in modern history.
It's a requirement to incorporate the rings, iirc.
He did, they're, uh, just all blank to...umm..represent how absent a sense of unity in the world actually is!
Yeah, that's the ticket.
Gonna piss off the non-Caucasians with that attitude.
But the text is in black. It's all very inclusive you see.
Lies! The surface area covered by black is significantly smaller than that covered by white. Moreover, one can see the white 'outside' encroaching on and twisting the black 'inside' into strange forms. There is even a subliminal suggestion of the minority colour longing for the majority 'norm' demonstrated by the black circle with white inside it! Furthermore there is no acknowledgement of any further spectra of colour, reinforcing the colonial dichotomy of 'us' and 'them' through a wah wah wah, a doobie doo doo doo, doobie doo doo wah.

It's too old school minimalist to look like anything but from the 50's, rather than a reinterpretation of minimalism.
