I made the terrible mistake of listening to Cornette's thoughts on the Rumble. Like an idiot. Like a fool.
... I don't think Cornette has realized that wrestling is staged, y'all. I think his brain worms are just puppeting his corpse around for the express purpose of screaming racist and misogynist shit, and in doing so have shut down whatever part of his brain that knows that wrestling is a stage play with stunts.

He's a real case study on real life flanderization. He was out of touch since like the mid 90's, but still understood wrestling enough to push stuff that got over even if he didn't like it, but once he got a podcast instead of doing shoot interviews he just started going harder and harder on the racism, misogyny, and out of touchness. I feel like it might have been Kenny's push in NJPW that seemed to really drive him over the edge.
I stopped giving a shit about him when he was on Chael Sonnen's podcast and was talking about luchadores and high flyers and he went off about how Rey Mysterio was one of a kind and you can only have one high flyer at a time in a company that gets over, which completely ignores that WCW had Eddie Guerrero, Psychosis, Juventud, and La Parka all at the same time that got over as well as rotating in other luchadores who knew how to incorporate that style and make Rey's matches look good. It wasn't just a dumb opinion, but an ahistorical one that he presented the way he did to match the opinion he wanted to push.

That's so stupid. I remember my dad and I channel flipping during the Monday Night Wars and we'd land on WCW as soon as their cruiserweight division was on TV doing all the cool shit only their division could pull off. It was a major draw for our household.
Then the NWO would show up and we'd flip back to WWF.

Like most things, Cornette is the most knowledgeable guy in wrestling when he slags off something you hate but an out of touch loudmouth when he slags off something you like.
He always complains about silly stuff in wrestling like he wasn't on the booking team when the Gobbledygooker was hatched on a Survivor Series or have the Christmas Creature wrestle in SMW.
Any time he slags off high flyers it's important to remember he managed the Midnight Express who's gigantic feud is against the Rock N Roll Express who were high flyers back then.
I believe one of the Young Bucks brought up a while ago that a) they think he plays up his act/isn't serious about some of this shit besides the fact that it clearly gets him attention/clicks/viewers/fans, and b) a) doesn't matter at all if you do the shit often enough and intensely enough nobody will want you even in a locker room for any duration of time where it might have some realistic financial payoff at a show anywhere. He's doing this shit on podcasts because he couldn't get away with doing this shit in companies because no big companies want anything to do with him anymore. Same with Russo
Cornette is definitely a grifter, but because it's wrestling, people just say "he's working!". He's Wrestling Rush Limbaugh.
Like he apparently went up to the Bucks or something at some event and said "Man, you and me are the only people who realize this is all fake".
I'm just surprised that somehow Disco Inferno, Vince Russo, Jim Cornette, Konnan, and all the others haven't all cannibalized each others' audiences yet. I understand the internet is a perpetual hate machine, but still.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
Cornette is garbage, but his episode on Jay Brisco was really kind. I don't recall a lot of the usual modern day wrestling hate, but mostly talking about how good they were, both in the ring and in life.

Damn it sure would make Cornette look stupid if there were so many luchadors getting over in WCW that most fans forget about Blitzkrieg.
He also got paid for almost 5 years by WCW without wrestling a single match - he'd call up the office and pitch story and gimmick ideas, but no-one ever acted on them and the money was still deposited into his bank every month anyway.
By making the Cody thing happen at mania they are going to ruin this entire Sami Zayn story
Its so similar to Bryan's rise and Roman winning the Rumble. Yes, this should have been Cody's moment, but his injury made him miss time and you made a huge star in the interim if you capitalize at Mania. Question is, are they smart enough to call the audible?
By making the Cody thing happen at mania they are going to ruin this entire Sami Zayn story
Nah, I think you can still end it at Mania with the Usos vs Sami and Kevin, because the Sami story has never been about a title, but about Sami trying to find a family and himself.
Remember, the Sami in the Bloodline story started after Sami was at his “lowest” point, having lost the IC title and losing to Johnny Knoxville at Wrestlemania. He was looking for a sense of purpose, and latched onto the Bloodline in that regard. He became close with them, even to the point of being brothers with the Usos, which is why he’s going to be hurt more by Jey’s eventual betrayal (which they should save for EC) than by Roman kicking him out.
It’s also why Owens has also been so integral to this story, because for as often as Sami would say that he finally found a family that loves him, his hesitation to fight Owens time and again showed that wasn’t true. Owens was right all along - no matter what Sami did, he was never going to be fully accepted by the Bloodline because he isn’t blood. Sami and Kevin aren’t blood either, but they’re as close as you can be to family, and though they may fight (a lot), at the end of the day that’s the family they’ve made for each other. Owens and Zayn winning the tag titles is only secondary here; the real victory is Sami remembering who he is.
I'll put on a conspiracy theory hat: they're 100% aware of the growing fan push to get Sami Zayn to Wrestlemania, and they're leaking the exact right shit to the dirtsheets to make this another Daniel Bryan style run and get the fans really in his corner. I don't really believe this one that much, but there was that leaked Triple H bit about how they don't see him as a Wrestlemania main eventer, which...I dunno, I feel like Triple H especially knows better, given how integral he was to the Daniel Bryan rise and given that he was in charge of NXT for Sami's title chase. They don't see him as the face of the company? That's fine, I don't really think anyone expects him to be.
Or:
They're seeing all the same stuff we're all seeing and are pretty sure Cody Rhodes is a big enough star and is popular enough with the fans that they'll be okay either way. Also, they can send Cody to Saudi Arabia, and they can't send Sami there. Might end up being that simple.

I think this story absolutely makes a lot of sense, and I think they can definitely sell the crowd on it. You have KO make the save in Montreal and the roof is gonna come off that place.
If I was WWE and was concerned about anything with Cody Rhodes winning those titles, it's that...he doesn't have a lot of history with the current WWE roster, or at least not with those at the top of the card, unless they want to dig real deep and start talking about how Cody and Goldust won the tag titles off of Roman and Seth back in the Shield days, but...Goldust isn't in the company, and they only one them because the Big Show (who also isn't in the company) interfered. Cody's relying on his family name, which, to be clear, isn't nothing, as the core selling point of this, and he's smart enough to know how to build with what he's got, but...his is the kind of story that works in any title feud. It's gonna take some work (which they can absolutely do!) to give this any real interpersonal stakes.
Edit: It's mostly that...I do think a Sami/Roman feud at Mania is a better story than Cody/Roman. I suppose the problem is that KO/Sami vs the Usos is similarly hard to top, and you probably can't do both. They've already blown off the New Day's challenge in that feud, and short of a miracle Big E return, there's not really another satisfying end to that story.
I think the kicker for me is Sami hit Roman with the chair, but he apologized to Jey. He sought Roman’s approval, but he actually got it from Jey - we saw that during the trial.
If I’m booking this, even Cody’s role is pretty simple. Roman has built this myth is around him that the title is his birthright, that his family deserves to sit atop the WWE. Hell, his first feud as champ was about getting said family in line and then gaslighting them into submission. But Cody can also lay claim to the same birthright that Roman can, which should be enough to terrify him and cause him to only focus on Cody.
That opens the door to Wrestlemania. Jey walked out on the Bloodline because of the legitimate bond he built with Sami but will return for EC to cost him. Tag match set. But in the course of the build, Jey is going to realize more and more that Roman doesn’t truly care about them and their struggle because he’s too busy focused on Cody. That culminates at Mania where Sami and Kevin win the titles and Roman is nowhere to be seen (this should probably main event N1, btw). Then during Roman’s match, he‘ll be evenly matched with Cody. Roman will call for the numbers game, which is his one trump card, and the Usos will come out, but it’s this moment where they finally break free and refuse to help him. Cody wins, fireworks, Bloodline crumbles as everyone takes turns going after Roman.
...and I've got to say one of my favorite things about wrestling is how it's a narrative measured in years involving hundreds of characters and yet there is no protagonist. For years Roman was booked like he was the protagonist but it was handled so poorly that he devolved into the industry's biggest and most dominant villain. In Cody's mind he's the protagonist, fighting for a prize that his family has been denied. Sami is the fan favorite though and the entire arc he's been on has done loads to rehabilitate his character from annoying guy who cheats and loses a lot to something far more well rounded and interesting. Jey however, Jey is a special case because it would be so easy for him to be another one of those annoying heels who cheats and loses. Instead he's become maybe the most compelling character in this whole story.
Eh I dunno about that, it seems like anymore when I agree with Cornette it has me questioning why I agreed with him.

The important thing is that the Sami story is simple to show in video packages and still carries the emotions. I haven't watched any of that story unfold except for random clips and after the match at Rumble I was still begging for Sami to hit him and popped when it happened and when Jey left the ring. Its got easy to relate to themes of found family.
I'm a big Andrade fan, but its very funny to me how AEW just slowly replaced him with Rush.
Wasn’t Rush notorious for having a bad attitude in ROH?
Wild that Andrade came and said hold my cerveza
He was notorious for always having a bad attitude, but he's done a bunch of jobs in AEW, so I don't know what to think.
Even Lucha Twitter seems surprised. Rush is featured pretty well, always looks good, but loses and more often than not loses clean. Considering his reputation, it's surprising. He also tweets putting over people, makes jokes about himself, and the other day posted about how he is always learning from the legends around him.
He also didn't try to fight anybody backstage and get himself suspended. Maybe Rush knows AEW is essentially the peak for him if he doesn't want to sign with WWE ever, and he's doing his best to play nice, make a ton of money at a sweet gig, etc? Look at Bandido or Lucha Bros or even Laredo Kid: coming in and working well with others gets you far more money and opportunities than being a cancer.
