Ancient [chat]ology

Rhesus PositiveRhesus Positive GNU Terry PratchettRegistered User regular
Turns out being on mobile is no defence against being picked for the new [chat] thread, so let's do this

Let's talk myths and ancient pantheons for a bit - who were your favourites growing up? I'm not putting a poll because there will inevitably be a key one I forget in the heat of the moment

Greeks? With the 100% accurate Disney depiction?

Egyptians? With the cool Dorling Kindersley fact book with all the gold stuff on the cover?

Romans? AKA Greeks with the serial numbers filed off?

Norse? With beards and mead and sexy horse action?

Whoever worshipped those Venus statues?

Let's share sexy statues in the name of Art and lament the fact that pretty much every ancient mythology symbol probably means white supremacy at this point

That marble lady looks like she's trying to get away from that embrace. We have a Pepe le Pew situation immortalized as art.

It's depicting the "abduction" of Persephone

So you're not wrong, if Pepe le Pew was trapping those cats in the Underworld and only letting them out because of a technicality with fruit

I like the twist Jim Butcher did in Skin Game:
Hades and Persephone's marriage was consensual, but Demeter didnt approve then went empty nest crazy and Hecate agreed to guide Demeter on a wild goose chase for several months so they could have a honeymoon.

Doesn’t Persephone eventually acquire Stockholm syndrome in the myth??

Warner Brothers: we canceled Scoob 2 because it would damage the brand.
    Also Warner Brothers:

I heard someone describe Velma as a show they would have expected a right-wing troll would make to mock progressives, and that's pretty accurate.

IIRC Hesiod kinda leans that way. The more common was she quit objecting to it so hard to keep the peace but still for the most part hated her time in the underworld.

Fun fact that isn't actually fun but is a fact: the term Stockholm syndrome was made up out of whole cloth to discredit a hostage in a bank robbery who was criticising the police for endangering their lives

It's Age of Empires with mummies and cyclopses. It was good twenty years ago and I expect the remake coming out in two months should also be good.

Good to see them trying to reframe MeToo as some kind of censorship movement as opposed to exposing sex criminals

I really hope it's out of context

Persephone may have been the actual underworld Goddess of Mycenaean Greece and Hades was a later addition at some point in the Greek Dark Ages.

So he’s titled himself Genshu, The Wandering Ronin. Please note his name is not Genshu, it’s Genshu, The Wandering Ronin

Genshu, The Wandering Ronin does not speak Japanese, please do not speak to him in Japanese as he will be very embarrassed if you do

@Incenjucar I checked and didn't see anyone respond to your post after I went to bed.

PbtA is Powered by the Apocalypse, and refers to a rules framework and design philosophy inspired by Apocalypse World from around 2010 or so. I don't know a ton about it, other than it's really good at narrative storytelling. In essence, the creator went "Go wild! Use this, be inspired by this, give me credit or not, whatever! Just make good stories."

Greek Myth is great cause it doesn't have a canon therefore everything is equally valid.

Hades and Persephone are actually in love? Sure.
Zeus is actually a wifeguy despite being a serial cheater? Why not.
Ares is actually a femboy? What part of no established canon don't you understand?

Iirc the Apocalypse Engine as such isnt even a real system, it's a design philosophy and a general structure to the game and storytelling. The creators wrote something like "We cant copyright the ideas here or like the mechanics so theres no real need or ability to license ports of the system"

Apocalypse World being a particular set of rules and text that is, ofc their IP, but their view was that they couldnt control that way of building a game up even if they wanted to

I started tearing down the raised beds in the garden so we can rebuild it over the next few weeks, and even though the sun is out, everything was wet and sloppy chat.

I stopped after three of the six beds because I had slipped twice.

Meh. At least I'm showered now. Gonna be bad today and go get a burg and some fries, but I'm making orange chicken with fried rice and air fryer/soy sauce green beans.
