I have no idea if it is true, it's just the explanation I came to for why it has so much weird "hey have you heard of Saga prefecture" stuff in it, and having seen a few other tourism-funded anime in a similar vein. Stuff where the local tourism board funds a local animation studio to produce an anime and promote the area in the background of it while they do whatever the fuck they want otherwise.

Is Zombieland Saga basically a promotional piece for Saga prefecture? Like it's about zombie idols but the genesis of the project and the funding was as a tourism ad basically?

I'm pretty sure that's the literal in-universe premise of the series. The Idol Agency is meant to revitalize the prefecture.

Last night on Animenagerie, Lupin died again and then Zombie Land Saga gave us a history lesson of the Saga prefecture of Japan with an episode set entirely in the Meiji era. I had to leave early, so I missed whatever duck hijinks happened in Princess Tutu.

Duck tried to leave her tutu in a garbage can like Spider-Man and retire, but the prince was tricked into diving into the water to meet a water spirit like some sort of Greek myth, so she had to transform again to save him from drowning. Also the rival black tutu appeared, and she's really into crows, big 2000s Sting aesthetic.

Yes, it seems Saga was smart enough to realize making the standard promotional show wouldn't be nearly as successful as making a 'cute (zombie) girls doing cute things' show and just surrounding them with constant Saga references. Lars can say more, but it absolutely seems to have worked.

Spell-guns make me think of that girl with a wand shaped like a sniper-rifle she carries in a coffin. And that makes me think of the time someone in that series
went "Aha, but see this house was my wand all along you fools!"

It was originally a show titled "Idol Zombie," but Cygames basically went "Eeeeeehhhhh, no." But at the same time, there was a request to make a show set in Saga, where the president of Cygames was from, and with whom they had just made a big deal to open a new tech office there. So they retrofitted that onto Idol Zombie and renamed it.

Just the gang trying and failing to do all the stereotypical anime op/ed things: running through a field (whoops no cardio), dancing (whoops can't dance), dramatic fighting (whoops dropped the sword), flying gracefully through the air (lop whoops just uncontrolled, panicked falling).

Just a real good solid gag

I love Konosuba but holy shit could it stand to be like, 10% as horny as it is.

Admittedly, that one episode accounts for at least half the horny per capita.

I think the Saga Prefecture also ended up helping to fund Zombie Land Saga, and went all in on cross-promotion to increase tourism (it also worked, if I remember right).

They had buses decked out with Zombie Land Saga imagery (and recordings of the voice actresses for tour guides), the governor of the prefecture appeared in several videos dressed as the manager from the show, bicycles you could rent emblazoned with the different characters, and there is generally just merch and posters everywhere.

Also nearly every location, business, and event in the show is real.

Here's a Japanese video (with English subtitles) of someone touring a lot of the locations:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJvO5-_UQ1Q

They include a lot of traveling between places that you can skip through, but you get to see the bus I mentioned above and a lot of locations. The exterior of the chicken restaurant from season one looks the same on the outside, but the video shows that the interior is now wall-to-wall Zombie Land Saga merchandise.

I can't remember if it's in that video, but even minor areas like a nondescript park they hang out in one night in the first season is a real location. Also the house they live in for the show is a museum in real life, I think.

    Holy cow.

    https://deadline.com/2023/01/apple-drops-of-god-series-legendary-tv-1235156947/

Having read Drops of God in manga form I am very curious to see how this TV version works out. (there was a japanese adaptation a while ago, but it does not look like it was made with much budget, and Drops of God is definitely something that would benefit from high production values)

I was buying that but stopped at 4 (cos that's as much as had been published). I should get the rest.

Comixology Unlimited gets you all 44 volumes, for what it's worth.

That said, I was pretty frustrated to find out that when I got to the end of those 44 volumes, they only cover the first 12 bottles -- the final arc is in 'Drops of God: Mariage', which is apparently about food and wine pairings and goes on for 26 more volumes which aren't translated yet. (officially or unofficially).

It's still a pretty fun read to that point, there is a lot more ridiculous descriptions of wine along the way, but if you want to have the story completely resolved, it won't do that.

While I'm thinking about Drops of God, a brief listing of some other alcohol-themed manga that I've found:

Bartender Lead character is a bartender; each issue, someone comes in with a problem of some sort, which he can fix by serving them just the right cocktail. The plot and location moves around a bit, but fundamentally that's it all the time. (also had a live-action adaptation, _and_ an anime adaptation). Completed; fun, pretty light-weight, informative if you want to learn a lot of details about exactly the right way to stir ice.

Natsuko's Sake I've mentioned this one before -- woman leaves her job as an ad exec to go back to her hometown and make the ideal sake that her brother wanted to make before he died. Very detailed about how sake making works; but also about organic farming, how much you owe to your family, small-town politics, Japanese taxation policy if I remember correctly, a smattering of romance here and there, etc. Completed, though it was a bit of a let-down that, until the last few chapters, I really was not sure at all how some of the big plot points were going to work out, but they all just went the obvious way in the end.

Sleepy Barmaid Starts off feeling like Bartender with a female lead, but turns into a more character-driven story fairly soon. Worth a look, though not completely translated at this point (by a long way).

Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana Girls in college get drunk together. An awful lot of romantic undertones, not _quite_ got anywhere yet, but pretty fun to this point.

Alcohol and Ogre Girls Girl who really likes making drinks meets up with ogre girl who is only powerful when drunk. Has more vague romantic undertones, but is mostly about magic / history / curse-breaking, etc.

Grand Blue Sure, you could claim it's a romantic comedy, or that it's about diving, but it is also very much about alcohol.

Oishinbo has a bunch of chapters about sake, but it's really more about food so I'll get to that one in the list of manga-about-food I keep meaning to make.

A few more alcohol themed or related manga:

Nomi Joshi - Three friends, all women aged 29, who get together and socialize regularly and indulge in their common passion: drinking. Follows them as they visit hot springs, beer gardens, bars and more to sample different drinks, pair them with delicious side dishes, and chat about work, their family, how to keep warm while wearing skirts, etc.

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte Kara - The "slightly sweet tipsy couple comedy" manga centers on the 28-year-old senior public relations company staff member Chisato Mizusawa. The story follows Chisato's daily life as she enjoys her husband Sora's cocktails. Chisato has secrets that only her husband knows.

I got around to the latest OPM

    Tornado is scary

And fuck is the art so good

I'm kinda disappointed they changed her motive for this particular event from the webcomic, since it alters her character dramatically
In the webcomic she is not pulling a big brain secret plan she is literally coming to kill Psychos and it's her sister trying to stop her until Saitama intervenes. This new bit about her only pretending to be murderous so she can catch a spy makes her seem heroic instead of the utter sociopath she actually is.

As much as I thought the angle of Tornado as the abusive older sister was more interesting, the manga has long since gone the direction of making her a more good natured and heroic person, so I'm not surprised the manga has needed to tie itself into knots to make this arc somewhat work.

So while we are all waiting for more G Witch in a few months, let's briefly talk about how the Aerial's main theme is really dang good.
