I’m sad that Mike Trapp isn’t doing Um, Actually anymore. First episode with Ify and BDG definitely felt like they were still getting their legs under them.

Ify without glasses threw me for a second. I enjoyed the episode though.

A magnificent meme that is a spoiler for both Fantasy High Junior Year Episode 8 and Game Changer Episode 2 this season:

I had to look to see what had happened to him, and basically he's just been doing Um, Actually as a freelance gig while working on other projects, and now he has a kid and those projects are moving and he doesn't have time for it anymore.

He's now a full-time writer for Rock, Paper, Scissors (Nickelodeon cartoon), so while I'll miss him (The CollegeHumor sketches he was responsible for are often my favorite, like The April Fool), I'm glad things are working out for him. I'm constantly given the impression that CH/Dropout takes care of their people but also can also only do so much.

Yeah, from everything I can tell, outside maybe some crew, producers and Sam, Dropout doesn't seem to be a full time gig for anyone except maybe Brennan, since D20 always seems to have a season in production.

They definitely seem like they take care of their people, so it's probably a solid base of work, but with the way its been joked about people kinda begging to be on Game Changer and Make Some Noise, I imagine that there's a ton of folks who would happily work a lot more if there were episodes/slots available.

Yeah, my understanding is that with Dropout being almost entirely unscripted game-y shows, there’s no reason to pay for full-time staff writers, so all the gigs (except maybe Brennan) are freelance contractor gigs.

Either way, I’m a huge fan of Trapp’s CH work and I loved him on Um, Actually. Hope he has success with his new writer gig and gets some time with his kid. But selfishly I hope he ends up in front of the camera regularly somewhere!

    Gamechanger just dropped.
The return of Sam Says! The addition of a swear jar was pretty inspired, especially when all of the contestants decide to biff themselves down to 30 points.

Also, both of the Don't Look Now prompts. Good lord.

From what Ive read Sam would probably hire everyone full time if he could but theres no feasible way to do it as a stand alone entity and we've seen what happens when corporate interests get involved

Fantasy High: Junior Year episode 10:
Good lord, that speech with Quincy quitting Aguefort and Fabian literally shitting himself in bard class had me gasping for breath, I was laughing so hard. It rivals Fabian and Chungledown Bim. And Siobhan is right, Lou made it WAY worse than it had to be.

Also, Fabian totally biffing it with Mazey. That was humongous levels of cringe.

Lou and Brennan are really hammering in that isolation with the rich lonely kid aesthetic, especially after Fabian missed calls from BOTH of his parents (including a phone call to Hell, somehow).

The big thing I'm excited about is that preview, though, for the next episode. Gilear! ROMANCE PARTNER! Tellemain! Looks like next week is going to be all the greatest hits!

Also, this Brian Murphy reaction face is everything:

I'm nearing the end of Fantasy High Season 2 and I think I'm gonna have to read a wiki or something because I've definitely lost the thread on a bunch of things happening or how things work.

It seems like whenever Brennan is playing different characters my brain lights up and then when he's explaining how a thing works that my brain goes dark.

By everyone, it really means everyone and not just the talent on Game Changer. They showed her Venmo directly on screen, and a bunch of fans sent her cash. She got at least $1500 from it within 24 hours.

I do wish they were still doing some sketch comedy on the side, because that's where a lot of them, especially Katie, thrived. The CH comedy sketches during the last 4-5 years were just really damn good. One every few months would be better than nothing.

From the preview for the next episode:
I wonder if Gilear is more directly tied up with Fig's curse. Obviously, it seems like Fig's Bardic Inspirations are cursed to give Gilear-esque bad luck to other people, but I'm wondering if it's also causing Gilear's good luck. My guess is that every time Fig causes bad luck, some good luck happens to Gilear, and I'm betting that it all started with Gilear winning that cruise right when Fig called on the power against the Night Yorb. And based on the preview, all the good luck is torturing Gilear, might even be having something like Sudden Wealth Syndrome, the thing that a lot of lottery winners get when they win all that money. Poor lad has been beaten down by life so much that good things are torture, that's rough.

Resubbed for the year and am catching up on Gamechanger. That was a great Sam Says. The desolation on everyone's faces after they got back was amazing.

Also I think Tommy Shriggly is a sure bet for best VIP episode. Dunno who else is coming but that was great.

What’s amazing about Vic to me is that they seem to be holding back their full potential chaos. Like they seem to be keeping a lot of intrusive thoughts in reserve, just in case they have to unleash a true hell on Sam. Can’t wait for that episode!

Edited for human care, thank you.

Last I saw was they/she but probably best to default to the first one in that order if you aren't using both.

Fantasy High Junior Year Ep 11:
Man, that was a satisfying episode. Lots of lore, lots of feels, and even a heart to heart talk between Sandra Lynn and Fig. Gilear just not accepting his "curse" of luck is so hilarious. I also love the Secret Sylvan gift exchange. Also, there were many critical story Nat 20s in this episode, which is great considering all of the biffed rolls from past episodes. It feels like it's all coming to a head.

The reworked Um, Actually continues to struggle. The guests don’t know much, the questions are uninteresting and way too long, and the shiny stage or whatever just doesn’t work. I love Ify as a guest, but I just zone out when he reads the questions off the cards.

I don't agree with the stuff against Ify but it does seem... odd that they did a themed guest episode without tailoring their questions to the things they'd actually know a lot about.

Yeah I was gonna say, this has kinda been my problem with Um Actually since Season 1.

I feel like they're trying too hard to stump the audience and have stumped the contestants far too thoroughly.

    Twitch: Thawmus83
  • GnizmoGnizmo Registered User regular
It is unfortunately a problem that is pretty inescapable. They don't have the pull to lock in talent so you can't tailor craft the questions to just the contestants you already have booked. See one of the wrestling episodes for a great example of what issues that can cause. Someone clearly dropped out so they got who they could last minute and he made a big show about how little he knew. Even if they stuck to their reliable cast (which has different issues) even they might book something that is just too good to pass up. Especially since, as far as I know, very few of their talent are full time staff members.

Yes and no. The issues you bring up here are absolutely the biggest part of it. But I think it's also that they want to go into the weeds with semantics while simultaneously trying to ask deep cutting questions about deep cutting nerd-dom.

Whereas I think the show could be better focused on either the semantics or the deep cuts. And based on the issues you bring up here, I'd lean more heavily on the semantics and less on the deep cuts.

It’s not like the show’s some unworkable or unproven premise. There have been eight good seasons! They just need to zero in their recent questions to get back to the balance of nerdiness/bullshittery that’s worked before.

Yeah but at least with that episode it was clear they were trying. I'd bet these contestants knew a LOT about drag history and they could have gotten a really solid episode out of that so I just don't see why they asked three people who clearly don't know much about comics about comics.
