I read somewhere that most cellphones have am and fm receivers built into them, but they don't work well.
I have an old radio in the garage too, I should mess with it the next time I'm in there working on arrows or whatever
What they used to do was let you connect wired headphones and it would use the wire as an antenna. But no more headphone jack means that doesn't work anymore. There are a lot of cheap phones that still have the built in am/fm antennas but the expensive ones don't because reasons.
The awesome is for the explanation, not the reality.
Thanks. It's very stupid considering my phone radio can go from as low as 600 mhz up to 39ghz but not down to double digit mhz where FM radio is. Maybe there is a technical limitation but i would guess they locked it off just because fuck the poors.
It’s a physical restraint based upon the length of the wave length. The size of a 30 ghz wavelength is around 30cm and the size of a 100 mhz wavelength is around ten times the length, the antennas scale up the lower the band. It’s a bit more complicated than this but it’s the overall jist.
We've had a very car-focused summer in our consumption. First, my car (Beetle) wouldn't pass inspection, so we were a 3-person house with 1 car. Fortunately, a friend of Mrs Lohan's was selling an Audi cheap, so we grabbed that for her. I posted pics in here a while back. However, as a fun bonus, three weeks ago, our Kia decided to need 4K in repairs and we decided that was just too much for an older car with tons of miles. Also, my son just got his license, and I work from home, so we started hunting for a car to share.
Here's the new ride (with my rather happy son) - it's a 2016 Cadillac ATS.
The amazing part is that we kept nearly the same payments we had before, but are driving much nicer cars now, and both have AWD which will be nice in our lovely Maine winters.
I also stupidly bought a few new knock-off emulation handhelds in a bout of sketchy capitalism. I'll have to post them when they arrive and I have them set up.
Hell yeah! My summer was also sketchy handhelds and new car summer. AWD is definitely worth it in the snow.
I added a Trimui Smart Pro and an RGB30 to my Miyoo Mini Plus and other, non sketchy, handhelds. I'm still configuring and setting them up but so far I'm really impressed.
Nice collection! The RGB30 is basically tailor-made to play Pico-8 games, so you should definitely throw that on there and give some a try.
I kind of want to buy an anbernic hand held but I’m waiting for them to upgrade their chip set.

It's a little wonky software wise because it's an older one I think and it's actually physically painful to hold with my giant hands
Edit and on the subject of radios my grandma had a vintage handheld battery operated amfm radio in a silver painted casing. It was super cool when I was a kid. You could get all the local stations and if you pointed it roughly at the transmitter and tuned it all the way to the top band you could hear the audio from the local fox TV affiliate.
I used to mess with it for hours. Wish I knew where it ended up. Probably one of my aunts who probably donated it.
The RGB30 is a Powkiddy device. I was hesitant at first because their quality is often said to be shoddy but this one is pretty great. The battery level feels a bit inaccurate, but otherwise it's neat.

I went to a client's house several times and I desperately wanted to take his radio. It was probably 40 years old, but in gorgeous shape. AM/FM radio with shortwave and just cool as fuck looking.
because I walk to work and back {a little over a mile each way} I find tools all the time. a huge screwdriver and a whole socket set recently as they do fall off a truck
but I find something else infrequently
Knives as it is distrubing I find so many none with blood yet I have seen parts of guns as well barrels and frames but I just leave them
I recently bought a new pocket knife because I lost my old one
One I got is like scary sharp from the factory and has some kind of assisted opening so you can flip it open one handed. And also two safety switches.
Not a huge fan of assisted opening, where there's some sort of tension bar or spring that just flings it open. All the anticipated dread of a roller coaster drop or balloon about to pop, except with sliced up fingers to worry about.
These days there are a ton of knives that have good quality washers or ceramic ball bearings in the pivot which are probably just as fast/easy at opening, but at least gives you more control over it.

It would have to be more of a whole radio receiver and antenna assembly with a digital converter to a useful USB output the phone would be able to accept, like external USB network interface cards in the dongle form factor. The USB port itself is not connected to the radios inside the phone in a useful way for what you are imagining.
I also want a working old media player. Would be nice to not have a phone to distract me from music at night.
Unfortunately I also lost my entire old collection of digital music when I accidentally formatted the wrong old HDD a number of years ago so I wouldn't have much to pop on one.

There are definitely ways to uh, reacquire mp3s nowadays.
Because I’ve been long term into Bluetooth headphones I don’t have a pair of headphones that have wires.
What like a nice fucken pair of headphones I could get?
I think we still have an audiophile thread somewhere, probably in the tech forum. I think Sennheiser is still the go to for great headphones but i am not sure which models.

But they are 150ohms so the iPod probably can't drive them very well alone. I mean they will work they might just be a little quiet and not super full. I've got mine plugged into a schiit headphone amp in my PC. Then again they're also pretty high sensitivity now I'm looking at the specs again so it might be fine. The impedance might just eat through your battery I think?

For open back headphones, I really like the sound out of the Grado SR-80

Yeah Grados are my favorite open back, just be aware that the sound bleed out is pretty intense, so everyone around you will be hearing what you're listening to as well.
I have an ancient pair of SR100s that are still going strong, the only thing that needed replacing has been the cable, which tends to twist on itself and got run over by my office chair too many times.

I fucking hate assisted open on any knife. A boss once got me some super fancy Benchmade with a stainless blade, sheepsfoot with serrations, objectively a good knife. I refuse to use it because of that spring action. Feels crazy unsafe in my hands and breaking the lock to close it is sketch every time.
This guy has literally saved my life once and is on my hip if I'm wearing pants. I'm not like... A knife guy, but I can get it out and open on the same time it takes me too open the Benchmade and closing it one handed feels way safer.

I'm a sucker for a picket knife that's roughly shaped like a pen when closed. Most of the time all I need is a sharp tip or edge, so smaller blades are fine. This one is my current fave, the styling is a little heavy on the mall-ninja, but it's light and solid and I can open it with one hand, and the concave curved blade bit is surprisingly useful.
I really only just the pocket knife around the house. I never have a reason to have a knife on me anywhere else tbh. So the assisted opening is more of a minor headache than an actual impediment to safety or usefulness.

I've definitely been uh.. building my video collection while I start putting together a NAS. Mostly because it's easier than ripping them myself, though.
My mom has an old TV she's giving me to put in my room so I'm gonna get a Chromecast 4k to plug into it. What's the best app I can use to playback videos from my nas wired up in my living room that isn't plex (since I don't want to run a server to transcode my nas doesnt really have the ram or CPU for that, just open the files via smb or nfs), or vlc which always gives me trouble on Android.

My living room TV is webos though which owns because the built in media player is super robust as far as supported file types and stuff. And it just shows my nas as a separate input automatically.

Edit: The TrimUI Smart Pro is like a little silent champion. No one recommends it really, but the people who have it absolutely adore it. Nice get.

Bro I have offered to steal the original for you. It's in my old hotel. I can go do it tonight.
Was a weird set up, no idea what the state of it is these days. Obviously you need a 3.5mm jack.

Isn't the original enormous?
Also I'm not certain what the charges would be for smuggling art across state lines but I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze?

I use it a lot
Honestly how is it? I've been very seriously considering buying some for my groomsmen.
excellent build quality, has enough tools built in to it for most everyday needs, great pocket clip
I will say, get one with the flat blade rather than the serrated, since that will be much easier to sharpen
also if you want something smaller (keychain size) the micra is a handy little thing that has scissors and tweezers as well
