Whenever people invoke the grim specter of Family Guy humor, I never quite know exactly what they mean. It has enough different connotations to enough different people that it ceases to have a lot of function as a standalone reference point, to me. Are they referring to the mechanics of the jokes? If so, do they mean quick cutaways? Do they mean excruciating commitment to a drawn-out bit? Are the mechanics of the jokes irrelevant and they only mean "it has a lot of references?" If so, are the references lazy insults of pop culture? Arbitrary mashups of two different pop culture things? Are they slavish recreations of a better work? Family Guy is all of these things, in all of these modes, at some point or another. There are 400 episodes of the fuckin' show, they've sped through a lot of terrible gears, it is not an informative point of comparison.

I mostly hear it as a synonym for frat boy humour; crass, mean and usually punching down

I often hear it used that way, yeah. But also I sometimes hear it used to connote "lol random" humor detached from any voice/viewpoint.

    It's too amorphous!

This is just conjecture, but the theory is sound and has been accurate in the past.

Based on evidence of most games leaving Game Pass after 12/18/24 months, this article lists games potentially at risk. And it’s some big stuff…

Tunic, Guardians of the Galaxy, paradise killer, Undertale… there’s a bunch.

Again, it’s just guesses, but if there’s a game you’ve been putting off playing, this can give you a heads up.

Family Guy humour to me is cheap, low-brow, common denominator, and often punches down at anyone who isn't an older straight cis white guy. It is a shorthand for the worst old Gen-X and boomer predilections for comedy television. Many of my historically bad coworkers loved it and connected on their mutual love of the show, watched it on lunchbreaks, and at one point met a guy from a partner group in another country and remarked in awe about how he had a Peter Griffin sticker on the back of his phone for like, twenty fucking minutes.

Stuff you wish was culturally irrelevant but unfortunately has a throughline with terrible white dudes who think it's the height of comedy.

I do think it's fascinating to propose it as some kind of prism people will have different takes on as what *kind* of terrible, facile humour it represents, though, depending on their point of view and contact they've had with the medium. I definitely view it less on its humour mechanics and more on its effect broadly.

One of the jokes I heard on stream was someone asking someone what its like to be an old man and his reply is what's it like to go down on your sister, so yeah. The worst part is the voice acting is like the driest reads I've heard in a game that's "mainstream"

The Yakuza games were removed and then came back, I wouldn't worry on those, specifically. Meanwhile, AI Somnium did leave on a similar schedule, so better get to Nonary Games soon if you intend to.

Wanted: Dead sounds like how people felt about Forspoken from the trailers, but for real though.

From what I have heard, the dialogue in Forspoken is like, serviceable at best, but the gameplay is actually solid.

Wild Hearts feels like a novel take on the monster hunter formula, its apparently close to a game I've never tried, but the demo is up on ea play or gamepass with ea if you have that.

Diablo Cody wrote one (1) movie with a style that people (mostly dudes, in my experience) thought was annoying because it invented slang. It was a movie with and about teenagers, who often invent annoying slang

She's also written horror satire, grounded indie dramedy, a couple of episodes of absurdist comedy Children's Hospital, she was the co-creator on Tig Notaro's deeply personal tragicomic series One Mississipi. She's got a wildly diverse, largely-consistent resume, and it's a weird bummer that her name is so frequently invoked as shorthand for a style of writing that has much more egregious offenders. Like one of Forspoken's greatest sins is its insincerity, and even in Juno - the movie people have such a weird hate boner for - there's not an insincere bone in its body.

Everyone's annoyed by generic quip dialogue that's been happening for decades, and they tend to gravitate towards blaming screenwriters they know have a reputation for annoying dialogue/slang. Lately people have gravitated more towards blaming Joss Whedon, because he did the first two Avengers and has been revealed to be a huge sex creep, so it doesn't matter as much if the comparisons don't really hold up. Jennifer's Body has had a cultural reappraisal lately, Juno has a pretty solid critical reputation, and DIablo Cody hasn't really had many high-profile gigs lately, at least not in the eyes of the average comic book movie hater, so her name doesn't come up as much anymore. Like, on top of all of that other stuff, Whedon also has the specific ire of one of the louder comic book movie stan groups out there. The Snyderverse folks have no beef with Juno.

i liked The Spirits Within and i think it'd have gotten a lot more praise had it not had he "Final Fantasy" supertitle. That really got people to expect the wrong thing.

This was definitely my issue with it, went in to the theater to see it as a kid who was a big fan of that newfangled final fantasy 7 and 8, expecting something like those.

I haven't seen United States of Tara, but Young Adult does not have any weird slang at all. It's a straightforward indie flick with a deceptively black heart, it could not be any further away from Juno in style or thematic intent. Jennifer's Body is stylized and heightened in other ways. It's fast, but I wouldn't say it's especially "quippy," it's doing its own thing.

I've watched someone play the first hour or two of Forspoken and the dialogue seemed...fine I guess? I took issue more with the fact they went for the most stereotypical inner city black teenage gangbanger portrayal considering the game starts with her in court as a triple felon on her third strike from stealing a car as part of a gang in the inner city.

It's also unfortunately got the weird agglomeration of conservative people who have glommed onto it as a supposedly anti-abortion film, and that's honestly done more to tarnish it's legacy in my circles than even the dialogue quirks (which I never thought were actually that bad tbh)
