What's the score on the D&D movie anyway is there like some sort of Jumangi effect or is it just a meta-free romp through a dungeon to kick a dragon to death or whatever
I'm still not sure if the main character of D&D2000 was supposed to be a Rogue or a Fighter
There's an official 3E module (well, it's called Fast Play Game but was released during the 3E days) included on the DVD release that has stats for the cast.
That does not look like 3e d&d

It plays it straight and is just a movie set in the mythos/world. Primary story follows an arc centered on an ex-Harper in the Forgotten Realms trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter after a job went south several years before that got her mom killed and shenanigans ensue.

for additional context: the D&D movie is from the directors of the movie Game Night

Goddamn, that new 'Puss In Boots' movie certainly goes quite a bit harder than one would expect, doesn't it?
I'm glad that Hollywood people looked at 'Into The Spiderverse' and actually learned the right lesson for once: animation can look like whatever you want it to look like. Squash it, stretch it, fuck with the framerate: the advantage cartoons have over live action is "malleability". Use it!
Also goddamn, what a great villain that probably inspired a few child nightmares! Which is what kids movies need more of nowadays: something good and scary!

I believe it was based around the idea that people had six sided dice already, so the d20 roll gets replaced with 3d6 (which, hilariously, probably makes for a better game). So with some small adjustments that's essentially 3E.
Also if it's 3E rules then a rogue would absolutely be able to sneak attack with a longsword, you could do it with any weapon, you just weren't necessarily proficient with the longsword without taking a feat.
Dang I've got a hot take about an old movie, I didn't care for War for the Planet of the Apes at all even though it's the best reviewed of the trilogy. The apes look and act too human, and Caesar talks constantly. He hates talking! Woody Harrelson is the most boring trope, the comic relief ape sucks, and I don't really care about this random little girl. In fact the story as a whole is just kind of lame. The second movie is obvious in a good way, this movie is obvious in a way that feels like they just went with the first idea to have something happen in the movie. God damn does the fur look fucking good though. A couple times I paused it just to look at Maurice, especially.

saw the dnd movie tonight as well, was pretty good! always down for some hugh grant villainy
the D&D movie has zero meta elements and is just straight up a fantasy movie where people go on quests so they can rob hugh grant
I watched it tonight and quite liked it. It was fun!
It's not exactly what I would call meta, but there's definitely a few "if you know you know" hidden jokes in there. But the camera doesn't like stop and wink and let the slower audience members pick up on it, just in general it's zipping along and isn't gonna stop to explain much.
Like the elaborate gnomish bridge puzzle, explained by the NPC party member (who is also written 100% knowingly as a lawful stupid paladin), plainly the DM was super proud of that puzzle, and then the party just immediately fuck it up.
My favorite little gag that the movie never actually calls out
How the barbarian's halfling ex-husband has now replaced her with an even larger woman
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
He felt like...superhumanly Good, and he could clearly read people like a fuckin' book. The setup for him was fun, and his dynamic with Chris Pine's character was really good. I genuinely liked how understated him guiding Pine back to doing the right thing was. There wasn't any haranguing him about it, it was more like someone going, "I know you're better than this, and I know you know you're better than this, so all I have to do is put the right thing to do in front of you, and when the chips are down, you'll prove yourself."
Honestly, Rege Jean-Page is probably the person who holds the movie together the most, for me, aside from Chris Pine. If any two actors in this movie had to play things sincerely, it was the two of them, and they both absolutely went in without a trace of irony

it's like Muppet Treasure Island, Tim Curry knew that to work with the muppet, one must just become a human muppet.

Like when Bruce Wayne was trying to figure out how he could strike fear into the hearts of criminals and a muppet crashed through his window.
To me the Paladin was basically the equivalent of the high-level NPC who helps the characters just a bit but can't actually be involved in the rest of the story because they'll just dominate everything and leave the PCs as side characters in their own story.
I'm curious if originally a big deal Forgotten Realms character was considered instead of a new one.

The Super Mario movie comes out today…feels like NOBODY is talking about it anymore
Yeah, the only new releases in theaters today (at least from what I can see playing near me) are D&D and Malum, the remake/reimagining of Last Shift by the director of Last Shift
Next week is Super Mario, Air, Paint, and How to Blow Up a Pipeline
Makes sense for the court of public opinion and especially the court of "would like to not be kicked from the eight marvel movies I'm cast for in the next two years"
I assume the lawyer is trying to show "see she apologized and said it wasn't his fault!"
Hoping, of course, that people are unfamiliar with the idea that abused people often apologize to and attempt to mollify their abuser to avoid further harm

I saw the 1993 live-action Mario movie during its theatrical run, when I was six years old, and I've never seen it again since. But this weekend I plan to rewatch it in advance of the Illumination animated Mario film.
Okay yeah I'll admit I hadn't caught that bit. Still makes a certain sense to share it as I'm sure plenty of people who didn't want to believe the initial one will be eager to jump on any fig leaf

If this does well I'm curious if a sequel will stick with the same characters or potentially showcase another corner of the multiverse.

A Hugh Grant that's thicker than Hugh Laurie as Prince George in Blackadder III, i.e. a whale omelet has nothing on him.
