I hated kung pow when it came out but dear God "We trained him wrong as joke" and "I'm bleeding, making me the victor" and "My nuts to your fist style!" are all great.
It's not a good movie and it has aged awfully but that one and a half scenes? Gold.
Some of my favorite bits are just one off gags, like someone points in a direction and goes “you go that way” and then points in another and says “I’ll go home!” And then runs off
Or the dumb dub jokes, like the dog barking and the audio track being out of sync, or the hero visibly screaming in someone’s face and the dub being a soft and polite “I implore you to reconsider”
I guess if you make a movie that’s essentially a series of loosely themed bits and gags, if the hit rate is high enough, the good bits will give that movie a longer shelf life
Kung Pow, like Dodgeball, persists with a few lines of dialogue that have entered my personal lexicon, but as a whole object, I have no qualms about discarding them.
Long time since I've seen Dodgeball and I only have a hazy recollection of it. What are the unfortunate implications in it?
A lot of unfortunate "jokes" regarding sexuality in that there film.
Yeah lotta homophobic jokes in that one. Some body shaming with the cheerleader tryouts flashback. And the stinger.
But, then Steve the Pirate.
A land of contrasts.
If you want to point to a movie from that time that is just bad in retrospect, you're looking for Old School
Even setting aside the stuff that's one can now recognize as problematic, the vast majority of the jokes just didn't resonate with me any more.
But, as I've said before, the film does justify its existence by adding "It's a bold strategy, Cotton" to our collective lexicon.
What's wild to me is that the premise of Dodgeball is that a gym that is welcoming and non-judgmental would be a good thing worth keeping around but it spends a lot of time actively body-shaming people. Like, did they not at all see the contradiction there at all?
Dodgeball has a lot of jokes and gags that we'd recognize now as transphobic-adjacent at best. Its fine to just remember the good jokes and know that we've moved on as a society and don't need to excuse the bad stuff. Comedic routines don't need to live forever.

Yeah, I’d probably never watch it again on purpose because woof, but “if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball” is just good writing.
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
Had me fucking dying in the theater. Like I was kneeling on the floor laughing. Kung Pow deffo had bits that landed for me at the age i saw it.
That and Thumb Wars was beyond stupid and I loved it.

Remember that Dodgeball also has the lance armstrong cameo
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Weirdly, Road Trip has like the most positive message ending of those early aught problematic movies. Which is not something I would have expected.
A relationship ends, but it isn't treated as a failure, and both people are amicable.
Stifler the proto-alpha male finds out he likes buttstuff and embraces it, and while it is played as a bit of a joke, it isn't one at his expense.
A son learns to confront his father and be his own person, and the father learns to let his son live his life and be proud of him for it, while also being wholly non-judgmental of the son's interracial relationship.
Tom Green makes out with someone's mom. Look, they can't all be winners.

Can you give me an example? i was sure it was wildly transphobic but couldn't remember anything and the wiki isn't helpful.

I like Shaolin soccer better than Kung fu Hustle.

I would guess all the "She's good at dodgeball, therefore she's one of them gays, cause real women aren't good at sports" jokes that the movie pops out a couple of times.

I mean, there's a throughline that isn't really difficult to see from "Women that are good at sports are gay" and "Not real women"

You would be amazed at how many people, even in the age of everyone walking around with a portable camera in their pocket, have no idea about how different focal lengths can radically reshape an image
EDIT: For the record, not accounting for individual variance, as well as the amount of processing your brain does and the impacts of binocular vision, etc. etc., on average the equivalent focal length of the human eye is apparently somewhere around 17mm; in person, Fetterman is probably going to look closer to the second than he would the first image
basically focal length is where the camera lens focuses and zooms in. in order to shoot a Portrait, where you need to stand depends on the focal length of a lens, and the closer or farther you are to someone creates a different degree of distortion and interpretation as a result. i'm fond of this comparison chart i pulled off google because it includes the background

Wiki has a great gif for demonstrating this in action as well:
In this computer simulation, adjusting the field of view (by changing the focal length) while keeping the subject in frame (by changing accordingly the position of the camera) results in vastly differing images. At focal lengths approaching infinity (0 degrees of field of view), the light rays are nearly parallel to each other, resulting in the subject looking "flattened". At small focal lengths (bigger field of view), the subject appears "foreshortened".

It is I think always incorrect to treat these people as if they have a legitimate misunderstanding. These people do not care what you say because their thought process begins with what they would like to be true and it's all conspiratorial backfilling afterwards.
