Going to dorm party thingy? What to put in the registry?
So the kind ladies at my church that I attend on a somewhat regular basis want to throw me a part and buy me things. To furnish my dorm or something.
I have no idea what to ask for.
My dorm does have a kitchen.
Currently I'm asking for:
sheets
cloth hamper that can become a bag. I figure this'll make laundry easier.
coffee grinder
coffee maker
blender (for my healthy shakes and smoothies).
IKEA gift cards? there was a lot of random stuff that my roommate bought from IKEA that was pretty useful (this "basket" that hooks on to the shower head, a simple small bucket to keep toothbrushes/paste/razor, etc.
Chair?
Towels. A fan perhaps. Consider a mini-fridge for your room too, if you want secure food storage. Or rental of one. I seem to remember that my dorm had a company that would rent you one for the school term, but I don't know if thats a common.
If you're saying those are expensive, they're not; they're probably cheaper than sheets. I know I got my Foreman Grill at Costco for $30.
I assume you already have towels, dishes, and silverware?
no i was agreeing with you and then putting something stupid in. I cant say what to get but my dorm days consisted of:
Foreman Grill (or the equivalent I am old)
Laundry stuff
Sheets
Flip Flops (maybe ask for Tevas? they are a shower must)
Sheets
Really small tv
Maybe one of those hanging doc kits. or just a regular doc kit.
Bathroom items like soap holders.
thats really all I needed.
i will say thats really nice of your church to do.
Apples to Apples - Fun party game that makes your dorm good to hang out in.
Some sort of carpet or pillows so peoples can sit on the floor.
Wall hanging type stuff.
Think in terms of stuff that you would need, not to have the kind of dorm room that you would be ok hanging out in alone forever - but the kind of stuff that makes it an inviting place for other people to come hang out.
It sounds like these girls want to get to know you better (platonically) and so try to facilitate them and others chilling in your "crib", "holmes."
Gift Certificates--all of mine to Barnes n Noble/Bed Bath & Beyond/ Linens & Things/ Target came in handy
for other things you'll need around the dorm that they can get you:
-Storage Units (collapsible, hopefully)
-tool kit (believe me, it ends up coming in handy)
-Also if you have a kitchen, dinnerware/utensils--you can't cook your microwave food on styrofoam plates
and along those lines maybe some pots/pans
-lamp
I wouldn't have ladies buy my sheets for me, but that's just me.
One more thing: A toolkit. Not something you'll need a lot, but handy to have. Mine came in useful one time when the guys next door to me decided to take their beds apart and make them into bunkbeds to get more floorspace.
I'll second IKEA gift cards. Seriously. They have about 10,000 little things that you need to actually go see before you get it, but are all infinitely useful. I bought organizers and cases for all of my games for under $30, and they all fit onto 2 shelves now, and you can't even tell that it is organizers full of games.
If space is tight, I'd also ask for an organizer type thingy that you can hang on the back of your door, should go nearly from top to bottom, and can hold lots of shit in it while taking up very little space. Plus, with the door open, it's hard to see that it's even there.
Usually for dorms the key is to maximize space efficiency. So go for stuff that will allow you to do that.
If you have your own bathroom (connecting your room to the room next door, perhaps), the baskets that hang from the shower head are really good. You can also get these things that where about 3-4 shelves go along a pole that fits into the corner of the shower, which is nice when you have 3-4 suitemates sharing a bathroom.

A hot water dispenser or electric kettle. They're good for more than tea - quick Ramen, jump-start your pasta water, heat up non-chunky soups...
Before you ask for a bunch of appliances make sure you can use them in your dorm. Some places will not let you cook in your room because it is a fire hazard.
Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, nice toilet paper (my dorm used sand paper ), tissue, removable wall hangers for pictures and stuff, gum, candy, (can be used for breaking the ice with new people), towels (big fluffy ones), wash clothes, hair dryer, electric razor, and a bunch of other things.

The most common rule I know of is "nothing with an exposed heat source". Which would mean no coffee pot, toaster oven, George Foreman grill - but microwaves would be okay. YMMV, though, especially if there's already a kitchen in the place.

Oh good point.
From the handbook:
Appliances
Listed below are kitchen appliances that may NOT be used in apartments for safety reasons.
NOT ALLOWED
Hotplates
Deep Fat Fryers
Electric Frying pans
Space Heaters
Halogen Lamps
Special Guidelines for Units without Kitchens
Student Housing does not provide kitchen equipment for personal use in any apartment without a kitchen. This policy has been created to clearly define the parameters in which residents may utilize cookware in their apartments, as well as in the common area kitchens.
If students have kitchen equipment in their apartment they must ensure that the electrical load does not exceed 15 amps per electric unit. Any electrical problems caused by the use of kitchen equipment in the apartments will result in a service charge to the residents of that unit.
Cooking in apartments is allowed only as a supplement to the regular meal plan.
Actually, other than the GFG, if you have a kitchen looks like you will do pretty well.
Wait......you're "allowed" to bring a fridge? does this mean that the dorm you're in doesn't have one? if not, you NEED a fridge. how else will you keep the beer cold?
Seriously, though, don't forget about cleaning equipment. Having all the nice stuff mentioned in this thread is good, but making sure it lasts your time in the dorm is just as important.
I'd hold off on posters, personally. You can probably get some fun ones pretty cheap from stores around campus. And let's face it, do you really want church lady posters on your dorm walls?
Good call. In lieu of the poster suggestion, I will offer this bit of advice. Your dorm policy states that coffee pots are allowed, but hot plates are not. If your dorm is anything like my dorm, then you will have to get the single cup kind, because the coffee makers with hot plates to keep the coffee in the pitcher warm weren't allowed. Make sure you ask someone in Housing Services, because it will get ganked if one of the RAs sees it.
Also, get one of those egg crate liner things for your bed. Dorm beds FTL. Maybe get a reasonable floor standing lamp, because there is nothing worse than the harsh mistress that is fluorescent lighting.

These sound more like cool alternative church girls, actually.
He'd probably get stuff like Weezer and Decemberists posters and all that.
Actually....when I said ladies I meant women about the age of my mom. There aren't any young ladies at my church except for the pastor's daughters, and they are more like 15 and 16.
So yeah, no church lady posters.
I've got a few posters already anyway.
Odinious: I'm going to call housing about the pot, good catch.

You can also consider getting a coffee pot where the carafe doubles as a thermos. I am pretty sure they can be found without the plate heating element.
OR
Better Yet,
Get the electric tea kettle and a French Press. Better coffee, no exposed heating surface. And get a thermos.
What about pots and pans? I don't want a whole set and I don't know what kind I should get. My house has a whole arsenal and I usually use a small one to heat up things like soup or, pork and beans, chilli, etc. What else is must have?

Whoops.
Nix all of my suggestions then.
EDIT: French presses are glorious. Get a grinder too!
Plasticware and paper plates/bowls. Trust me man, there have been so many times that I thought to myself, "Gee, a bowl of cereal sounds awesome right now!" only to find that I had no clean spoons or bowls (I brought regular silverware to my dorm - big mistake! There's no place to wash them).
I'm not sure what dorm-life is like wherever the people making these suggestions come from, but having gone through the process a couple of years ago, I'm finding the thread quite hilarious. But I don't know the exact circumstances; if you've checked the place out, already moved in, or are moving in later.
If you're eating something better than bread, dipped in anything runnier than bread, you're doing well as a student. You will likely not have time or lose the will to grill your own sea bass, hollow your potatoes and bake your tortoise shells in the aforementioned kitchen devices. Best to keep good cooking as simple as possible.

If you're the guy on the floor with the toolkit, all the girls come to you when they have a problem. All the attractive, nearby girls.
Or guys. Whatever you're into.
I drive a VW bus. I need it like every other day.
So the place they told me to make the registry is Linens and Things fyi.
Great suggestions so far, it's really helping out.
hmmmm I wish I would have had one of these. I'd put this number 1.
edit: behind flip-flops. foot fungus = no.

Besides, I'm only 19.
The drinking age in real states/provinces is 18 ;-) yay alberta 8-)
Handcuffs, gimp suit, a selection of good quality buttplugs...you'd be a legend before you even set foot on campus.
Go on, you know you want to!
My addition in bold. Still, she is wise in the ways of avoiding ickyness.
Swiffer w/ extra cloths
Air fresheners
Posters n' shit for the walls
Stapler (EVERYBODY NEEDS ONE, NOBODY HAS ONE)
