Technically, I'm not supposed to have payrises because I'm already above the top of my payband. It doesn't matter what my performance appraisal says, they can't give me more money because I'm already beyond what the HR payroll system says I should be paid.
Except the Union just negotiated a blanket $4k + 3% payrise for all employees phased over 12 months, and I'm pretty sure I'm covered.
It's not going to keep step with inflation, but it sure might be nice having what was supposed to be an immutable number move this year.
Small update on the NZ job search...my husband has now had two preliminary interviews in the last few weeks, neither of which went anywhere, but at least it's something. Just gotta keep applying, I guess.
I've been applying for jobs also, but my profession isn't on the green list, so it's very unlikely I'll be able to get a job offer on my own. But still trying just in case.
Plant manager decided to stay late and walk through the night shift crews to see how things were going. He did this by sitting in his office from 5-9 pm, in complete darkness, staring out his back window at the smoking area. No computer on, no cell phone out, just sitting and staring in the dark.
What a fucking weirdo.

So my direct boss, the creative director, announced last week that he's been promoted to Vice President. It's a small company so titles don't really mean anything but he's going to have a much bigger role in the overall direction of the company, essentially making the big decisions so the owner doesn't have to.
A few days later we found out this change has been made because the interim sales director had resigned. That doesn't seem like a huge deal, but in context it's catastrophic. When I started at the company two years ago, there were 5 sales staff. As of December last year there was one. A new guy started in December, but now he's the only person left in the sales department. So like... Every last bit of institutional knowledge is gone. Every single customer relationship. My boss took on this role so the whole fucking company doesn't collapse.
Anyway he had a big talk with us in his former department about what he wanted to achieve in this role and how retention had become his biggest priority and he wanted everyone to feel valued and he was revisiting everyone's salary and creating a bunch of new bonus and reward schemes and he was going to talk to every single employee to find out what they needed and how he could make their job better and get them the help or resources they need.
Then a couple days later I told him I was leaving 😅

Oh yeah, we've got some semblance of a CRM so we're not starting from scratch, we still have all our contacts, just no personal salesman relationships.
But yeah man, they're desperate to keep me. They gave me a ten grand raise today "whether you stay or not" and the owner said he might be able to rent one of his properties to me for cheap.
We're moving back to Australia, though. I can literally double my salary doing the same work.
I think the 5 year question really depends on the job. I had an office assistant job once and they asked me that, and of course I'm like um err uh jesus I'm so happy to be out of retail I have no idea, but in this case they wanted me to be looking to move up at some point and not just stay at entry level.
Then I bailed in less than a month when my first professional opportunity in my actual field (ish, mostly) came up, so be careful what you wish for employer!
But it's always weird balancing act of wanting to show you are interested in investing in yourself and the job (whether you actually are or not) while not necessarily saying "imma scalp you and sit on your throne, this department will be mine!" (even if you that's what you're shooting for)
And then found out it was not actually full remote, I would still be required to come into the office twice a week. The office in Sacramento. When I live in Los Angeles.
Oh well. Bright side is I got a call at all, so my applications are evidently good. I just need to keep at it.
Getting married next year and its only just now hitting me that if I want a honeymoon longer than like, a day and a half, I kinda need to suck it up at this job until then

There’s no single right answer for this, but if it helps at all, my wife and I agreed to put off our honeymoon for 12 months due to job shit. It was quite a nice way to do it
Get an email last week asking if they can reserve a store for an 80th birthday party for a few hours. Uncommon request, but went to humor it. Communicated to the location directly involved and got things organized. Didn't think anything of it.
My boss looks at this reservation and is flabbergasted. I don't see the big deal. He calls his boss.
This is the story of how 3 different seattle mayor's (including the current one) and a who's who of important people in the area came to my work for a birthday party.

We had our honeymoon half a year after our wedding due to the simple fact that we wanted a summer wedding but where we wanted to travel to was nicer in January. A wedding is expensive enough on its own, it should be fine to delay your honeymoon untill it suits your own schedule and wallet I think.
Delayed our honeymoon by about three years because we couldn't afford one/didn't have anyone to watch the kids for a few days (eventually my in-laws took a special trip out, just to give us a four day window)
Been dealing with vague passive aggressiveness about bathroom breaks all day.
It was like pulling teeth.... but I finally got a straight answer from about MY bathroom breaks. tl;dr all of my time AFK (besides lunch) is seen as one "pool" and I'm supposed to only use 30 minutes a day.
They were giving me vague warnings because I was taking two 15 minute breaks like everyone else will not realizing that pee breaks are the same "resource."

this is the most poo streaked bull shit
Break shit is somehow always the most stupid, petty thing that bad managers love to think is the root cause of all of their problems. I always hated it because it’s not the people who need the restroom more often, or the people taking five minutes longer of a break that are your issue; catch the people going AWOL for 45 minutes at a time! Go after the people literally just walking circles around the store! Don’t do that “we need to crack down on breaks” bullshit to an entire team. Manage, goddamnit.
Of course, this is from an hourly perspective. Salaried can be a whole nother can of worms but if your people are performing who CARES
This doesn't happen in offices! This wouldn't have happened to me in an office setting! I wouldn't have gotten stabbed in the head in an office, either!

Due to the transition to a new Human Resources/Payroll system, we are temporarily suspending the pay for performance increase process this year for employees on EXPENDABLE'S evaluations. The District will be sharing more information regarding the budget allocated for salary adjustments in the coming months.
I got out of a school-based role (where my principal never did any evaluations for me in two years) and into this district office-based role that is covered by this bullshit in the 18-19 school year; I've never had a performance increase, they're always "on hold" because of the teacher's strike, or covid, or now a system transition.
I've been asking my supervisor for my evals this year and last year what the point was since it never means anything. I need to find somebody higher up to ask.
"got new software, can't give raises" certainly is a new one. Never heard that one before.

I am so sore this morning.
Finished moving the rest of non-fic then got all the rest of the manga re-shelved. Left extra space in the back half of manga as I still have around 300 replacement volumes arriving some day. Once those finally arrive I'll give the manga a final shift to balance out the spacing.
Next steps:
- Disassemble the extra shelves I ended up not needing.
- Relabel the shelves.
- Move the hundreds of spare books from the literacy classes that I'm forced to store to a less crappy place.
- Maybe find a different place for the various extra shelving pieces I have left over.
"got new software, can't give raises" certainly is a new one. Never heard that one before.
Well, technically they're gonna give us a COLA like they do every year in August. They just can't tell us what it's gonna be yet.
2022 COLA: 3.9% (part of this was a "market adjustment" because we were in the news about non-teacher support salaries lagging so far behind the area as part of the lead up to to Teacher union contract negotiations)
2021 COLA: 2.5%
2020 COLA: 0.5%
2019 COLA: 1.9%
"got new software, can't give raises" certainly is a new one. Never heard that one before.
I once got caught in a round of layoffs because the upper management hadn’t paid attention to their Microsoft licenses to employee counts and were about to get audited by Microsoft to figure out the new licensing fee and couldn’t afford to cover everyone they had employed and given access to the Microsoft suite.
Alright so this is a bit of a story, but stick with me here.
My hospital system switched to a new timekeeping / HR portal. It's not like, massively different, but stuff is in different places which is annoying as hell.
Anyway, the bigger change is that they standardized shift differentials across the enterprise.
Before the change each division could apparently define what is and is not 'evening' or 'night'.
For whatever historical reasons, in the anesthesia department 'Evening' was defined as starting at 6pm and 'Night' was 9pm. If you worked past these times you got a little bump to your hourly rate.
Now, with the new system, 'Evening' is 3pm and 'Night' is 11pm. On the surface this makes more sense because most people work eight hours shifts starting at 7am, 3pm, or 11pm.
I, however, work twelve hours shifts usually 7am to 7pm, and so I got effectively a pay raise because I now get to count 3pm to 7pm as 'Evening' when before it was just 6pm to 7pm.
Cool!
But, there's a small group of us who work straight 11am to 11pm and apparently their job description was that they got to count the entire shift as 'Evening'' under the prior system. I didn't know this until the change, but good for them, it's a crappy shift in my opinion and they deserve the differential.
However, with the change, this group are not being grandfathered in and thus have a had a de facto pay cut because they can't count 11am to 3pm as 'Shift 2'.
And that's how some people got a raise and some people get a pay cut because we changed timekeeping software and policy.
Welp I'm devops again now. That's what I get for learning how to do stuff with AWS 8 years ago I guess

Once again, the desperate need of the university to have a comprehensive document management system with forms and workflows has reared its head.
I'm gonna try to make a case, build it and present it to management to make it clear this is desperately needed. There are going to be so many roadblocks. But the benefits will be huge if we pull it off.
We'll see if I can even get it to the starting line.

I'm pretty much 100% positive I'm not getting that little room off the library for my makerspace next school year. Also one of the vice principals keeps coming by to measure the library office so I might get kicked out of there as well.
Anytime anyone promises me anything in the future work related I'm just going to tell them that I do not believe them. I've been promised too many things and none of them have come through.
it was admin day last week and i received a grand total of nothing
i usually get at least one gift certificate to amazon but this year zilch.
