I am curious how the necro will be, because D2 had the “you can only get a skeleton out of a slain enemy” system, while D3 had “here are 5?6? skeletons who appear out of nothing, and resummon themselves automatically, and the button is Command Skeletons, not Summon Skeletons, so the button is actually a targeting button”.
And honestly, I liked the D3 version more; especially if you had a Flesh Golem, with its specialisation that he could poop out a corpse per second, meaning you always had a Corpse Explosion target.
Because in D2 you actually had to kill a few enemies at the start to get your army rolling, and I’d rather be the commander at the back who cowers behind bone armor, throws debuffs and lets others do the killing (and laughs maniacally when blowing up corpses).
I personally prefer D2's mechanics, the skeletons just felt more weighty because of it. D3 felt way more like a spreadsheet, so you had to have a fixed number, a constant, to calculate the build. At least that's what it felt like, and I never really felt like I had a skelly crew like I did in D2. I'm curious where they'll land in D4 as well
Yeah I love D2 necros, and D3's just felt like.....math with some skins on top of it. I know you can reduce any videogame to that, but I dunno it just felt like that. I didn't feel particularly unique or different from a witch doctor, and just felt like a different way of coming to the same conclusion. I played D3 quite a bit after they were added for reference -- they were just boring and less impactful than the other classes to me, and I never really had the urge to play them again.
And ultimately it didn't matter what skills I wanted to try, it came down to the sets that Blizzard specifically crafted for me to play with no real variance.
In D2, summon necros are pretty much just directly superior to summon druids in every way. But summon druids at least felt different and unique and like something I wanted to play, both before and after the D2R buffs. Just something about the theme and sound/visual designs feeling a lot stronger.

Ah see I love how the necromancer skeletons worked in D3 and a small petty part of me will always be mad they didn't rework the witch doctor zombie dogs and gargantuan into command attacks like the necro got
The fetishes at least got that hat that made them poison dart your target, that was really fun for a while
I'm very excited for the druid though, it was the first class I played in D2 and I always play pet classes if I can so its definitely gonna be either the druid or the necromancer first for me in D4
Did the US turn their clock forwards last weekend? Because for where I’m at it happens this weekend, which means that the beta starts for me one hour earlier than last week?

Seeing how well queues went last Saturday/Sunday, plus reading the DevPost saying "yeah we're trying to light the servers on fire so we family fix them now instead of in June" gives me some hope for launch.
Not enough to take the day off on the Friday of 4-day-early-access, but maybe the next Monday once kinks have been worked out...
I have to imagine the big D2 fans who hated D3 are not happy with the (functionally) 6 skill limit in D4. I was actually kind of surprised to see they went that way since I had been reading about the more freeform skill tree and all that and wasn't expecting the skill bar to look basically identical to D3's.
I dont really agree. I mean in D2 most of the builds were not all that complex.
They still tended to use significantly more than 6 skills.
I'll be that guy: What popular D2 builds use "significantly more" than 6 skills not including stuff from items?
Don't know about anyone else but Alt-Tabbing is broken for me (I do have RE4 running in the back): crashes immediately when doing so, which sucks when trying to multitask during the queue.
Argh, server disconnects are back. I logged in, then sat in the village for a bit while I had lunch with my wife and had just enough time to finish the tutorial dungeon and get halfway back to the village when I got disconnected with the code 316719 while trying to get back in. Sadly the only way I've found to fix that is to exit and reconnect, here goes another 40 minute queue, which I suppose is way better than the 2.5 hours I was getting last Friday evening.
edit: while I'm waiting, anyone got recommendations on necro skills?

...I suspect having Resident Evil 4 running in the background isn't helping. I've ALT-TAB extensively and have never had a crash, but I wasn't running any other games, just my browser.
I like decompose/blight so far, but DoTs are not for everyone. Sever is a cool concept for a new skill, almost like a temporary minion attack. There’s blood stuff going on, melee, classic corpse explosion…
Just slap some points into the skills and try them out!
Also note that clicking Raise Skeleton while at max skeles will heal them and give them a short damage buff
So im holding off on this one for now cause I have been in a real fuck you Activision/Blizzard mindset for the last several years. From what I have been reading its a diablo game (not that BS that is immortal) but I remember the shit they tried when D3 came out and of course immortal and other crap like that..
any whiffs of predatory monetization or crap like that, or are they smart enough to know not to mess with a mainline Diablo game? Ill probably reinstall D3 to make sure its not just my brain wanting to play a well made looter.

IIRC there's gonna be some season pass-style stuff, which Blizzard is promising will be cosmetic only.

Only predatory monetization is the steep asking price ($70 for "basic" game, $90 to get get the first battlepass and to play early Jun 2-5 before official launch, $100 to get the $90 tier and some free battlepass levels automatically and an exclusive emote), and the $10 seasonal battle pass. Seasons are looking to be every 3 months, so you're paying $40/yr if you want all the cosmetics. Plus they have strongly hinted at multiple expansions and you know those will all be priced at $70+ as well.

edit to add: my 45 minute timer finally ticked down and I got a timeout error so back to end of the line I go
actual for real edit: weird, I was just trying to edit the previous post, sorry for the doublepost
They have said for a long time now it won't be predatory. And immortal turned out fine and reasonable for that genre. So no reason to believe it won't be what they said like Immortal was.
You get free respecs until 15 also so just play around. I am using just decompose and blight with minion nodes and passives for corpse gen and minion dmg and life and it is really strong so far.
My necro had that weird impassable wall thing and couldn’t walk into Kyovashad. Logging out and back in put me at the waypoint in town though.
In case anyone else gets stuck
Had this happen last week, just sitting at the gate for a while eventually let it load, probably took 5-7 minutes though. In case anyone runs into this and doesn't want to risk a queue

I haven't really forgiven Blizzard for their hand in normalizing the worst cosmetic lootbox bullshit to date over the lifetime of Overwatch, but my remedy to that was just to stop playing the game entirely, and I haven't looked back.
Diablo, on the other hand, has been pretty free of that sort of thing. So personally, I'm satisfied.
Yeah they dabbled in that lootbox stuff. It's not here though. For me fifa is the most egregious. Well all those sports loot boxes seem to be worst of them all. /Shrug. If it shows up here I'll just ignore it really it's just supposed to be cosmetics only for anything of that type.
Still in the first village area with my Necro and loving the skellymans so far, but I've already run into what I'm hoping is a bug: skeletons don't auto-aggro on things if you're not considered "in combat". I've already run into packs and gotten walloped before my minions bothered to do anything.

Oh no, definitely don’t close the game I didn’t mean that. You should be able to leave to character screen and pick a different one without a queue, or in this case the same one

Opposite for me, enemies run right at my skeletons and I literally sit back and boner them up without any aggro. Seems busted so not sure if I liked it.
Also the skeletons skipping once you get to town because of the netplay is incredibly jarring.

I have been kicked out by network disconnect a couple of times, and trying to restart my char just gives an error message. Don't want to have to queue again

Happens with or without another program running. And there's - once again - terrible rubber banding. Will wait until they - again - fix the server stability to bother playing. What I did play of the Necro seems really fun though.
This whole event is a stress test -- large public betas for popular online games always are -- and this weekend will most likely be worse than the last since it's even a step beyond "beta keys for chicken sandwiches".
I hope and pray for some solid playtime, but this weekend is full on "throw it to the hordes and see what explodes".

Gonna try the Xbox version at some point, maybe it'll feel better on a big screen and a comfy chair.

Lol I just watched an Asmon clip where he did it at level 5. Butcher literally bugged out on Skeletons and didn't move... so yeah. Some issues there.
