Working remote in the desert, there was a game where everyone outs their hands flat on the table. The flies there are godawful, and they are just all over you right away if you don’t shoo them off. Everyone sits there and lets the flies drink the moisture from your eyes/nose/mouth and everyone has to buy the last guy with his hands on the table a round of drinks

According to WaPo, "Removal of verification badges is largely a manual process," and that "In the past, there was no way to reliably remove badges at a bulk scale — prompting workers tackling spam, for example, to have to remove checks one-by-one."

Well, good thing it isn't super-trivial for spammers to get a verified checkmark while also deciding a bunch of accounts who were properly vetted and verified need to lose their checkmark because you are a giant pissbaby who can't stand the idea of anyone criticizing you without paying you for the privilege.

    Ooh, storytime!

I ordered a set of candy cane yard lights for Christmas a couple years back. Amazon ships them and the box contains... ten 1 TB SSD cards. Literally over a thousand dollars in completely wrong product. We inform Amazon and they're like "you don't need to return wrong product to get new product shipped out", so I still have a bunch lying around.

But then they ship the new ones out and, after installing them fine, when pulling them up one of the wires got cut, which zapped me good enough that I jumped up and flung my hand back, which smacked into a plastic Halloween lantern I forgot I had hanging from beneath my gutter, which then flew off, bounced against the wall, and smashed down onto my foot.

Candy cane yard lights are a land of contrasts, I guess.

Seems like it'd be easier and cheaper to just nuke everyone's verified and then rebuild it from a list of accounts who've paid. Not that that'd be easy necessarily but probably easier than manually trawling through the current lists removing people

The "database-like" solution that is "akin to Excel" has me convinced they just have an Airtable sheet with a list of every verified identity in it, possibly ordered by add date.

Another, more sickos.jpg, part of me wants to believe it's a google sheet.

This doesn't help mobile browsing, but there's a browser extension called Eight Dollars that shows whether a blue check is verified or bought, still works even after this change (because, presumably, all they did was change the message string and nothing on the actual backend)

yeah the idea that banning any media will stop kids from finding new and exciting ways to hurt themselves just shows a profound lack of understanding of the human mind

Is "This account is verified because it’s subscribed to Twitter Blue or is a legacy verified account" only in English? I am using the Japanese Twitter UI and it is just giving me the English text when previously it would give me the Japanese text saying the person was a legacy checkmark or Twitter Blue subscriber.

Chait's an "even the liberal" pundit who tends to reach for the fainting couches when the youth argue that maybe we don't have to invite reactionary conservatives to speak at commencement. One of his bugbears is defending charter schools - unsurprisingly, his wife is a charter school advocate.

Which he tried to lie about in defense of her when the receipts are easily available on Google. The dragging he got on Twitter was (chefkiss).

Edit: As pointed out, his refusal to acknowledge the reality of his wife's position is a major breach of journalistic ethics - not a good look for a man who has made a career of being an ethical scold.

Chait is a decades-long liberal-centrist journalist who has written for most of the major outlets; your New York Timeses, New Yorkers, Atlantics, etc.

He was also one of the big liberal voices back in the day for pushing the Iraq War in the media, and still carries cachet with that set. You may also remember him recently for running defense for Jesse Singal’s anti-trans “journalism” that involved a massive HIPPA violation.

Ed Burmila is a politics writer and his most recent book is Chaotic Neutral, which is about the evolution of the modern day democratic party, and is generally good of a follow if you want a left wing voice who pops the balloons of idiots like Chait

The Atlantic comes in with an article that reminds me of what I said two or so Twitter threads back: there is going to be a core faction of American Liberalism* that is going to push against trans rights, and will do so steadily. It will begin like this, a kind of seeping in of doubts and vile poison about the legitimacy of Transgender rights, of transgender lives, in favor of the views of retrograde bigots who refuse to acknowledge trans folks being really who we say we are.

And of course, the author herself is a TERF with an axe to grind:
The treatment of Hogwarts Legacy reflects my own experiences of writing about gender: being dismissed by people—including some in video-game circles—who don’t know very much about feminism but are very confident that feminists are doing it wrong. A few years ago, my voice was supposed to appear on a fictional radio show within the Ubisoft game Watch Dogs: Legion. But a controversy erupted online over my opposition to the use of the term TERF (along with Zionist) as a lazy slur, as well as columns I’d written about the challenges of gender self-identification in women’s prisons and elsewhere. The company promptly canned me. When one longtime freelance contributor to Rock Paper Shotgun protested in the comments of its news report that the site was presenting only one side of the controversy, the website promptly severed its relationship with him. If you wonder why all the video-game press seems to speak with one voice, well, there’s your explanation.

*Lewis, technically, is from the British set, but you can see outlets like the Atlantic being a vector for this strain of anti-Trans liberal politic through writers like her
