It is roiling the country, is the thing. The impacts of this crusade reverberate throughout the superstructure, and it is pretty much THE mobilising issue (alongside housing, policing, and abortion/contraception rights) amongst most community organising groups. Worth noting that I don't consider reportage from corporate media to be the bellweather for active or popular social forces

No no no it was a carefully planned test flight to gather data!!! They just don’t get it!!!

    https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/26/spacex-starship-explosion-caused-3point5-acre-fire-us-fws-says-.html
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service disclosed new details on Wednesday about the aftermath of last week’s SpaceX Starship Super Heavy launch and mid-air explosion, including that a “3.5-acre fire started south of the pad site on Boca Chica State Park land,” following the test flight.

As of Wednesday, the FWS had found no dead birds or other wildlife had been found on National Wildlife Refuge lands, which are very near the launch pad and are designated critical habitat for an endangered species of bird, the piping plover.

The FWS said, “Impacts from the launch include numerous large concrete chunks, stainless steel sheets, metal and other objects hurled thousands of feet away along with a plume cloud of pulverized concrete that deposited material up to 6.5 miles northwest of the pad site.

The FWS had documented no debris on refuge-owned lands as of Wednesday, but staff “documented approximately 385 acres of debris on SpaceX’s facility and at Boca Chica State Park, which is leased by the Service and managed as a component of the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge.

In the agency’s e-mailed statement, a spokesperson for the Fish and Wildlife Service said that following the launch and mid-air explosion, “Cameron County closed Boca Chica Beach and State Highway 4 for 48 hours due to launch pad safety concerns.”

A senior attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, Jared Margolis, said that such delay can impede biologists’ ability to conduct a thorough investigation. He explained, “If there were any mortalities from the launch- particularly from concrete chunks and metal being hurled thousands of feet into National Wildlife Refuge lands that are habitat for protected species, such as the piping plover, any carcasses would likely have been dragged off by scavengers, making it difficult to assess the full extent of impacts.”

The last several decades have been instrumental in atomizing Americans, as well as the fact issues like these specific instances are not widely reported on at the national level

It's pretty much a result of how unbridled capitalism has fucked us over. Over the last few decades of the local news outfits have either been shutdown or have effectively become lackluster national outfits because a bunch of dipshit suits decided there was no money in reporting on local or state issues. So a bunch of bullshit has been allowed to go unchecked because not enough of the public was aware it was happening.

Granted, we also have the other issue where the super shitty theocratic, nationalist Christians have successfully gained control of much of the party. Mind you the GOP has always been super shitty and that wing has had plenty of sway on republican policies, but there were some things that didn't happen because the other shitty wings of the party either didn't want to touch them out of fear that the public would turn o them or outright disagreed with the theocrats. Plus, there is an argument to be made that they've gotten more rabid because they aren't taking well to the idea that that the US population is becoming less Christian to the point where even if you use the loosest definition of Christian, the US will soon not be majority Christian.

I'm not even sure what I can do. I live in Massachusetts which is still choosing to protect a woman's right to choose. So if Tennessee and Montana are getting taken over by fascists what can I do about that? The national government isn't doing anything (although I know my reps are trying at least) and it's not like the Commonwealth can force other states to do anything. It's not like I can pack up my things and move to another state just to set up a protest network or an underground railroad. I'd donate money if I wasn't living month to month and barely getting by.

Lanz I have more to say when I get home but in short: yes, I am extremely aware and my frustration comes from the utter discounting of the importance of who is in power. This discounting is where the feeling of nihilism comes from WRT rhetoric.
It's not discounted, it is recognizing that the best we can hope for from the "not as bad as Republicans" crowd is for the largely unacceptable status quo being maintained.

As a, let's say, representative example:

Biden has done nothing to protect or secure my rights as a female of childbearing age.
On Friday, I tried to be brave at my intake appointment with a gynecologist, literally practiced the lines I came up with as I sat waiting in a hospital gown, and still ended up leaking tears because of the stress. She apologized that I even had to think of, much less address, the concern of my privacy and health being respected by a doctor.

My partner and I do not plan to have children, but if --after nearly 2 decades together-- I somehow ended up pregnant, we'd discuss options. And if that pregnancy ended in natural or induced abortion, it would be a difficult time -- in Texas, I'd additionally get to worry about a lawsuit or jailtime if the wrong person had that information. (Any abortion {even as legally performed in another state, it being illegal here} is subject to the vigilante law. By the by, contraceptives and other fertility management are also under threat.) I am relieved to have the doctor onboard as anxiety-management for hypotheticals. With that alone, I have incredible privileges not afforded to others. I have relative safety, but it is relative, not absolute.
The status quo on that single issue is frightening, but it is hardly the only damaging standard being maintained by centrists, even in the midst of a liberal to progressive city like Austin. After a tight runoff, the recently-elected mayor (former mayor from 97-01) --amidst contract negotiations, oversight concerns & a defund movement-- brokered a secret deal to boost policing, which wiki phrases diplomatically as a request "to deploy the Texas Department of Public Safety troopers to patrol Austin, drawing scrutiny from some city council members who were left out of conversations prior to the announcement." This, after Dallas' controversial experience with same.

We're having to jump through additional hoops to show that Austin citizens want different policing standards and practices; over the next couple weeks, we "get" to vote on a prop that actually works towards police oversight, and a police union-funded prop that essentially negates all progress in that vein, while it actively defangs the other prop.

And because we got the "business as usual" mayoral candidate instead of the progressive one, it's gonna be harder to push back against the state leg imposing more restrictions and more or less gradually sanding down rights.

    You're making a tone argument when it's clear-eyed triage.

Its insane that state GOP are literally banning political speech they disagree with and this isn't roiling the country?

So I mean ironically this is the sort of rhetoric that the GOP uses to rile up their base. Banning hate speech, expecting people to respect pronouns, protesting against bigots being given public speaking opportunities, etc. are all spun as the left "banning free spech".

Part of the problem is that neither the Democratic party, nor mainstream media, is willing to call the GOP what they are: fascists. And any time someone uses that word - or, hell, even far less loaded terms - to describe them, they get written off as a crazy leftist.

This is, for what it's worth, precisely why the Democrats merely being the better of two evils/functionally conservative compared to the outright fascist GOP, is not enough to fight back against this. They're more interested in maintaining politeness and status quo than actually rooting out this evil.

You do not need to have a complete, end-state answer to make a start. The two things you can do right now is start building a mutual aid network and develop class consciousness, either in yourself or your peers. The purpose for this, outside of just enriching your own day to day life, is allows you, and average citizen, to more effectively respond to situations as they develop.

Two real world examples for you:

I was able to leverage relationships I’ve built through community work I’ve been doing over the last 4 years in the most recent floods where I live. We used the tried and trusted connections and bonds to quickly and simply get necessary items (food, potable water, blankets) to people displaced by the floods. We were able to do this in some cases nearly a week before the government aid groups arrived.

Florida right now is about to pass legislation banning public service unions (notable exception for the filth) from doing payroll deductions for dues, and will deregister a union if it doesn’t have at least 60% membership. If those groups have been hard at work on building and maintaining their relationships, they stand a good chance of weathering this adversity.

You will also find that taking positive steps in this manner will ameliorate some of your feelings of anxiety and despair. Not necessarily a panacea, but it will certainly help

Also not saying one needs to live in reaction forever, but it’s a damn good start, laying the foundation for more proactive, large scale work later

As U.S. Senators unveil a bipartisan bill that would ban kids under the age of 13 from social media, Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) — two of the bill's sponsors — speak to @NikolenDC about the intentions behind the legislation, and how it would be enforced.

Well that’s not a back door to deanonymizing the net in an era of growing fascism and mandating a corporate handout to these politicians business friends who will own these verification services at all!

    PRO

-Sets good example to Americans to work through their 80s

-Staves off Harris-Newsom ticket another four years

-Only minor edits needed on cable news graphics packages

    -Electorate already used to settling

-We might get to see a dead body

    CON

-Could be vaporized by single second of microphone feedback

-Will be blamed for the mistakes of his predecessor, Joe Biden

-Negative approval ratings, lack of policy successes, and people not wanting him to run might hurt chances somehow

-Takes opportunity away from younger lackluster candidates

    -He might win

You can read any forum content without a login. (Speaking as a longtime unregistered lurker.) It's convenient, but not a necessity.

That is not true for an increasing amount of social media, most notably Instagram. Tumblr, certain subreddits... banal as it is, even Pinterest nags you to log in, tho I don't think it gates content, per se.

The underlying bit people are worried about is access for marginalized people to those spaces, because this is almost assuredly a smokescreen to go after those folk next by way of controlling social media to a greater degree (not ignoring that those kids might already be marginalized, and via social media, could discover community they didn't realize existed due to censorship at home or imposed on schools.)

The devil is in the details, like enforcement and verification

This goes nicely hand in hand with the "Anti-Tiktok" legislation that basically allows them to criminalize actually literally any speech they feel like online

Clearly they just don't want kids to be distracted during their graveyard shifts at the meat processing facility

Like, can you imagine if a #teen tried to recreate a TikTok dance on top of the orphan crushing machine?

My (unfortunately) VERY Republican House Rep said he was against RESTRICT when I emailed him, I think it's not going anywhere. Only the most dead eyed centrists like that expansion of power when there hasn't even been one Chinese terrorist attack.

Yeah, about the number of dead-eyed centrists the Senate...

The bill has 25 co-sponsors currently. 11 of whom are Democrats.

So what, that's only a third of the votes you need to pass anything in the Senate.

    edited April 2023

During World War II, Avery repeatedly opposed actions of Roosevelt's National War Labor Board and opposed labor unions.[14] He resisted signing a contract after a union had won representation for 7,000 of Montgomery Ward's employees until twice ordered by Roosevelt. When Avery refused to settle a strike in 1944, endangering the delivery of essential goods, Roosevelt's administration used emergency measures to remove him from office and temporarily seize the company; in April 1944 two soldiers had to pick him up by an arm each and carry him out of his office.[15][16][17] Avery yelled at the Attorney General, who had flown to meet with him and try to avert a showdown, "To hell with the government, you... New Dealer!"[9]

It’s at least a bit harder, now. The forums are not completely indexed anymore, and if you click on the forum button on the home site without a login there is a truncated set of options. You can technically still get to social entropy and the other main boards if you have a direct link or you search specifically for social entropy on Google, but it’s definitely not like it used to be where you could easily read the whole board without a login.

I don't know how much it'll be, but I hate when corporations don't get every cent of their money taken for settlements like this.

The real issue with Joe Biden is that, unless you're a leftist, he's just kind of boring. Some of the sexual assault stuff might had an impact if he hadn't been running against Donald "Grab 'em by the pussy" Trump. Pubs can pull out all of their usual anti-left talking points, but ultimately Biden is like the most boring president we've had in years.

What the Right accuses Biden of doing: Taking away every gun, transing (??) the military.

What Biden actually does: Quietly decide to reuse one of Trump's awful policy decisions (border rules) for no stated reason, Tweet that the Republicans are doing a thing that somebody should look into.
