Please excuse the blood double post, but this is making me want to do another re-watch of Lords of Chaos now.

Maybe we need a list of metal-based movies for the OP!

This part's feeling really dated in 2023. I still love it, of course.

@BlackDragon480 let me know if you go to that M+G/Soundcheck. I considered it but couldn't justify the price. However, my partner is also a metalhead and recently got into media production focusing on animation, so part of me was like 'is this a networking event??'

It's dated and timeless at the same time

It's dated enough that I briefly considered doing something with it but I probably have my finger on the pulse far less than most of you guys, frankly (I'm aware that most of my posts cover, like, five bands or something and probably fewer than that are still putting out new material on occasion). And yeah, there's sort of a timelessness to it.

Hell, if I were to rewrite it the bands mentioned would probably get older.

The only one I think can be replaced is the Behemoth one but idk with what to replace it with. Ghost maybe?

Shit, that could work. Replace Behemoth's music video money reference for Ghost's wardrobe money reference.

Honestly, this discussion is making me wonder how the '00s will be remembered from a metal perspective. A lot of great stuff came out in that decade, but there was also a lot of weird stuff. Nu-metal kind of peaked and then died and arguably nothing from the heavier genres really rushed in to fill the commercial void left by bands like Limp Bizkit an Linkin Park. I know metalcore, djent and some other -cores sprung from that and some bands like Mastodon appeared poised to jump into stadiums but outside of Ghost I don't know if it really happened.

Or maybe it did happen and I just didn't notice? How big are bands like Avenged Sevenfold? Will the '00s be remembered as the Avenged Sevenfold era of metal music?

  • Futt BuckerFutt Bucker CTRegistered User regular
When I think of mainstream 00s metal I think of stuff like Lamb of God, KsE, and Avenged Sevenfold. I know A7X are playing amphitheaters this summer and LoG still tours all the time. FFDP, can't forget them. Also bands like Opeth and In Flames really broke through in NA and reached much larger audiences. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

Linkin Park remained huge until Chesters death, there really wasn't ever a void. I think they sold north of 50 million albums.

Heavier modern radio rock like I Prevail, Breaking Benjamin, Motionless in White and From Ashes to New is pretty prevalent still. I'd even say the stuff we hear on the radio these days is a bit heavier than it was in the 2000s. We also hear Killswitch Engage without the screams edited out these days.

And if you haven't heard, nu metal isn't dead. It's just weirder now.

Not mainstream, but I think of a lot of the 00s as setting the stage for the underground metal explosion of the '10s and current day. Stuff like Isis and Pelican setting the stage for post-metal and a more cinematic approach to metal in general, Mastodon and Baroness kicking off the Southern sludge boom, stuff like WITTR and Alcest setting the stage for atmoblack and blackgaze, and I think the OSDM revival wave kicked off towards the end of the 00s and beginning of the 10s as well.

I think for a lot of folks now in their late-20's early-30's (like me), the most important phenomenon of the oughts was Guitar Hero. That game single-handedly introduced so many of us to classic rock and metal. And I'll be honest, the "Through the Fire and Flames" credits run-through on Guitar Hero 3 (I think) was what originally got me into metal. I remember being completely slack-jawed at what I was hearing at age 11.

All these folks trying to be the Hiroo Onoda of the Loudness War...

I like the Overkill slightly more, but the Metallica was surprisingly solid, I just didn't like the drums/drum mix very much, but the songs themselves are pretty tight, and lots of callbacks to older albums (and reminded me a lot of Death Magnetic too). Early to call, but this is probably their best 21st century album to date.
