Earliest bookmark I have was naturally an old MSPA thread but with a memorable final page:

I lurked on some old version of the forums before 9/11, joined, got yelled at for looking like a gay librarian who wasn't even trying anymore, went back to lurking, joined more seriously some time before the great reset/move

This place is much nicer now than it ever was previously

My earliest bookmark is from 2013.

Which I great. That means there is a solid decade of my post history that is hopefully gone.

    I've been here since 2003.

That entire era needs to be erased.

Maybe I just haven't noticed (or have forgotten) anything to the contrary, but everyone has always been nothing but sweet and neat to me.

Unless you're all talking mean about me in PMs.

But that just means you're afraid of me.

Yeah there were some very mean posters in SE++ for years, it's why I hung out primarily in the halo thread in G and T and the comic books thread in D and D for like a decade until Graphic Violence was built

My hobbies have changed several times, I guess that makes sense since I have been here for so long

It wasn't just SE++ that was mean. I remember lurking in the Artist Corner waiting for a "Check out my new webcomic" threads to popup and turn into a bloodbath.
It was like watching a school of piranhas go to work.

I worked at one of those now out of business electronics stores when I joined. You know, when everyone was pushing those hundred dollar gold plated premium cables that were the same as the ten dollar ones. And the comic came out was making fun of it, where Gabe wanted the cables to protect from space goblins or something. And I remember printing it out and hanging it in our warehouse because he's all "But my signal!" I still giggle at that every one in awhile.

And the first thread that made me want to sign up was a playthrough of the Jaws game on Xbox. And everyone was just ripping into it how you had to like chomp a scientist with a key card and carry him in your mouth underwater to open a door.

There was one screenshot I remember where the shark is blasting up through a boat and the guy is falling out and debris is going everywhere, and a poster goes "Is he throwing his gun away?! He's like fuck this I'm out!" And it was hilarious. I still laugh about it.

That fella was my first IRL brush with "OK, I call bullshit: I don't believe you're a real, actual human being", a skill which would sadly become called upon regularly in the decades to come

Also, was it "koba" who had the Hobbes avatar, and was suspected to be Jon Bois much much later? It was early after I joined and all I can remember specifically is "the dude who got banned for, I think, being inscrutable?", but even all these years I still think he was just a masterful troll? Or performance artist? He's stuck with me, regardless

"Good poster with a Hobbes avatar" is riotcow, in my mind

Mean doesn't really cover how SE++ was back in the day.

I was entirely G&T for years as my first post in SE++ was met with like a dozen plus replies full of some pretty gross shit because I was, and this is a direct quote, 'a numbersname'

A lot of us in G&T avoided that thread entirely, too.

I started posting in like 2006ish while I was trying to finish up my bachelor's degree. I had a foot over here and a foot in Something Awful but did a lot more lurking and reading than posting. Eventually got bored of SA but liked the community in SE++.

In 2008 I started dating my still-partner (VisionofClarity) who is definitely more of an extrovert and she ended up joining the forum. Soon people just began referring to me as "VisionofClarity's boyfriend" and to this day she still laughs at me about that.

I fondly remember the couple BosPAXes we had in Boston up until we got invited to have a conference with the Reed Expo folks to consult on PAXEast when that got started. Good memories meeting Khoo at New York ComicCon and later drinking and eating burgers on his company card in Boston, conspiring to get Sheri up to the first PAXEast so she and Javen could start dating for real.

No idea who is still up that way. I know MegaMan001 moved in right when VoC and I were heading south to Atlanta. Javen moved to Florida to live with Sheri. Usagi would visit from time to time and that ruled until she moved out of New England and eventually to Canada. Otaku Suppository/Chairman Meow/whatever forumer he'd pretend to be to new people was still there last I heard but that was over a decade ago.

That mid-late 2000s forum era was a real decent time, I gotta say. Now I mostly stay in touch passively through various social networks with the people who don't post here anymore.

Yeah. There was a period of time where "Whatever ******, go back to G&T" was the unofficial SE++ catchphrase.

Sometimes I'll see a poster who will be defending cancel culture and talking about how [celebrity] is a horrible person who should lose their career over a joke they made on twitter years ago and I'll be tempted to say something like "remember that time a guy made a thread about how he was so mad that a girl he knew wouldn't have sex with him so he waited until she fell asleep and jerked off onto her back and you posted in it saying it was hilarious?", but I don't.

Consider any fond recollections I have of the pre-edict forums to have a nice asterix next to them. That we were mostly a bunch of teenagers of the first internet age enacting our own version of Lord of the Flies isn't much of an excuse, but most of us who lived it grew through it and are far better people now, fighting the good fight against a backslide into that era once more. The sheer number of people who would fling about those slurs ("ironically" or not) only to later come out as some category of queer once we had time to reflect on that shit says a lot. Unlike some other internet forums I could name, growth definitely happened here and it's something I regard very positively.
