Guys smokestacks just went upstate to live with that guy who did a racism and that guy who jerked off on his roommate.

I have no idea who SmokeStacks was.

Like none, whatsoever. The name means nothing to me at all. Azraith was saying they feel unknown but I know their avatar and recognize the name.

    Guess I didn't miss anything.

As bad as the old days were, I think this place was probably my first time interacting with gay men (more than just in passing) "IRL"? I'd met a lot of lesbians as a kid through my mom, but never actually "hung out" with homosexuals because I'd grown up pretty sheltered/the opportunity had never presented itself

And it was sort of foundational? Homophobic slurs were getting hurled around left and right back then almost every other post, but the gays who toughed it out here at the time for whatever reason gave at least as good as they got, and are still some of the posters I remember most fondly (specifically thinking Redeemer and Neville, although I'm sure I'm forgetting a dozen others)

I basically grew up on early SE++. Was it telling that a 13 year old could find a community in that environment? Probably.

Still, I think I'd be a much crappier dude if I hadn't had so much opportunity to hang out with people so different from me early on.

Sometimes I get really nostalgic and wonder where all those people I knew by their mid-2000's avatar alone might have ended up. Who knows, maybe I passed boddah in an airport or something

Oh not the holiday forum one, no. This was waaayyyyy back.

Yeah, this was back in the days when we had "Deputies." They couldn't ban (and I don't think we had the infraction system back then), but they could do maintenance on threads, and we had that big, juicy merge button....

It was inevitable. Someone would have done it eventually.

    If I remember correctly

It was the Whining Forum, that weird once a year thing that popped up for a couple of days which happened for a couple of years, and Scrumtrulescent and myself were mods there (why? I have no idea)

We were talking on AIM at the time, and there were two threads that we... didn't like for some reason? Talking about something very similar or very different maybe? Anyways, we thought it would be funny if they were the same thread, so I merged them

It was very funny as people sorted through what was going on, but they figured it out after a little bit and we got bored with our limited power again

At which point Scrum merged every thread on the front page

I have to wonder if the vibe shift around "gay" as complimentary rather than derogatory had happened before the Glorious Edict arose, or if it was a side-effect of that.

Certainly, the usage has shifted in online culture in general (outside of the sewer pits but those weren't going to change), but I couldn't nail down when exactly that change occurred, other than "Later than it should have been, goddamn."

    Get an anthropologist on this.

guys, honest question, is "internet anthropologist" a thing? because that's the sort of thing I could see myself doing.

like, I want to dig deep, go through the archives, the microfiche

    who is Bizarro Stormy

and then it turns out I was bizarro stormy the whole time and my search was just an experimental therapy so that I could come to terms with the murder I did and that's why I never had a lighter or matches or anything the whole movie.
