guys, honest question, is "internet anthropologist" a thing? because that's the sort of thing I could see myself doing.

like, I want to dig deep, go through the archives, the microfiche

    who is Bizarro Stormy

and then it turns out I was bizarro stormy the whole time and my search was just an experimental therapy so that I could come to terms with the murder I did and that's why I never had a lighter or matches or anything the whole movie.

    it's definitely a thing!
It's probably not a thing you can get paid for much, mind you.

Who was it that posted these long ass stories from his childhood about legos and shit? This was on the old, old forums, like 2004 maybe? I remember being mesmerized by them. Very nostalgic. I kinda assume they've become a shitter but I'd love to be proven wrong on that.

    Y'all remember Wiggin?

I don't know why I thought of that, other than this being the olden days thread.

I actually talked to Wiggin recently, we're on a mutual Discord server or two by sheer coincidence and only found that out because I cracked a joke about knowing who owns Andrew Hussie's Wizardology book now

There are a ton of weirdo teenagers in my town that are obsessed with homestuck. I told them that once upon a time I used to do comics with andrew hussie and have a ton of his old art they probably hadn’t seen before

Every single one of them called me a liar

Which ultimately turned out pretty good, because the more I thought about it, the more I realized the last thing in the universe I want is a bunch of teenagers trying to hang out with a weird old man

  • ASimPersonASimPerson Cold... and hard.Registered User regular
The main that concerns me about that statement is the use of the present tense in terms of being obsessed with Homestuck.

Back in the day, kids, you didn't have to download a special thing to see a homestuck.

It just worked in your browser with a thing called FLASH.

    MACROMEDIA FLASH.

PEOPLE MADE WHOLE WEBSITES WITH MACROMEDIA FLASH. AND DREAMWEAVERS.

    ON THEIR OWN WEBSITES.

    NOT ON SOCIAL MEDIAS.

    IMAGINE, CHILDREN!! IMAGINE!!

Look man, summer's right around the corner and you're primed to be The Cantankerous Mentor in somebody's coming-of-age movie

You're annoyed they're hanging around, at first, but they win you over. You teach 'em how to chew tobacco or do a stick n' poke tattoo, imparting idiosyncratic lessons on life and love all the while. You've got some old machine you're restoring, an old fan boat or muscle car or a Marvel vs. Capcom cabinet, you fold it into your metaphors whenever the kids come around.

You're probably gonna have to beef it in act three, that's gonna be a bummer. But they'll finally get that old machine humming in tribute to you, it's gonna really tug the heartstrings.

I mostly remember Smokestacks for being absolutely livid when someone suggested there should be female Space Marines, like dozens of posts ranting and raving...

My favourite thread was the one where Piggychimp, who lived with Tube at the time, did a live stream of some horror game. Maybe Amnesia?

They were petrified, Tube said he was going to the toilet then he went outside to the window next to Piggychimp and lunged at them through the window.

Also, people in the chat convinced them that the people on the chat were talking from withing the game.

That's true for most anthropology majors though, as far as I understand.

Extremely few get to do what you learned about, some others get to teach it, and most go into advertising or something immediately adjacent.

There are websites and apps created to simulate the original reading experience as a serial reader at the time.

TBH I would recommend listening to Homestuck Made This World, "a show where two cultural critics, one an old Homestuck fan and the other a new reader, work through the landmark multimedia webcomic and discuss it with the intent to critically analyze and contextualize it and its effects on the world with a blend of media theory, game studies, and internet history."

It is fully finished, and is both educational and entertaining. They also talk about how to read Homestuck these days, but I never actually read along with them and still feel like I understand Homestuck pretty well, both as a narrative and also its appeal for people.

There is definitely some passing mention of the PA forums, and we are (rightly) not painted in a good light, but the vast majority of contemporaneous forum reactions are drawn from the SomethingAwful archives, as they are both fully accessible and Michael Lutz was active on them while Homestuck was ongoing.

  • Mortal SkyMortal Sky queer punk hedge witchRegistered User regular
HSMTW was an especially fun listen for me because I made the jump from forum culture to tumblr culture around the same time as (and partly because of) Homestuck culture shifted it's center of mass between those two mediums

Incidentally some of my convos with Michael Lutz end up showing up, especially those about which Tumblr fandoms fed into and were later formed out of Homestuck

I've read PA and that's about it. Though I haven't read the comics or news in probably five years. Probably longer.

I read a bit of VG Cats entirely based on the 'how I mine 4 fish' comic they did around WoWs launch (which I played a lot of ). Then someone recently posted some VG Cats stuff and ohhhhh my god
