The Fall of The Trenches

IcyFusesIcyFuses Deprived Artist i check the forum oftenRegistered User regular
I’m pretty sure everyone is aware that the Trenches comic has died for a while already. What remained was a husk of a former collaboration between Penny Arcade and PvP. The website would stay up for the next several years when it ended, which was the time when I started reading it.(i know im late to the party)

Every now and then I would return to the website and start reading through the tales section. I went to trenchescomic.com today. Server didn’t respond. So, this officially commemorates the death of the abandoned website. This could possibly be a bug within the site or the website payments being cancelled, though I wouldn’t get my hopes too high. You can check it out yourself.

The comic was pretty meh, but my mother and I enjoyed the tales a lot since both of us are QA people.

Wasn't there also an issue with the artist no longer responding (one of the contestants from Strip Search)? It was always a weird project to manage and I guess webcomics plus anecdotes were just not pulling in the numbers to bother solving any setbacks.

Well, given that she wound up in the middle of one of the largest scandals in Western animation, it's not surprising that she went to ground given everything.

I think we are confusing The Trenches with Camp Weedontwantcha, but yes I want to hear that gossip too.

It came out (when everything came out about the whole fucked up situation) that she was one of John K's victims. We had discussed it in the Western Animation thread when everything came out.

The good news is that despite the horrible situation, she went on to become an animation director, and was one of the primary directors of the Animaniacs reboot. I know feelings are mixed about that show, but the animation there is sharp and creative.

Did Katie work on Trenches? I thought that was a Monica and Ty thing.

Regardless sucks that she had to go through that, but good for her that she seems to have a good career going.

Katie did not work on the Trenches, she did Camp Wedontwancha and then went off to have the career cloud just described.

I went back recently and watched some of the Scott and Kris show, PAtv, Blams, Strip Search, etc from that era.

I'd say like 2008-2015 were some big years for PA and a lot of good work was coming out of the environment they were fostering there.

Kinda sad it's no longer the case, but I also imagine it's still fun, there's just not a full time film crew there documenting it.

Scott and Kris just riffing for 15 minutes and then animating it was a surprisingly fun show.

"HEE WUZ DED!" Just slayed me when I first heard it.

I liked the trenches well enough, but it wasn't exactly news to me that working in game/software development and QA was just as hellish as most corporate jobs. The anecdotes were the main draw for me.

And that's the thing - it was uncomfortable enough when the anecdotes were "I never see my family because I'm always at work." Now, after everything came out at ABK? You can't and shouldn't make light about "a woman was so severely sexually assaulted and harassed that she committed suicide." It's gone from "ha ha sob" to "get your torches and pitchforks here, folks."

I don't think there were stories in The Trenches about sexual assault and suicide? Mostly just anecdotes about weird projects and crazy managers.

There's a ton of people working in game dev, there's many stories to tell. Some horrible, some funny, some inspiring, some mundane AF. Compare it to a appreciating a travel anecdote from someone visiting Thailand, a story about something weird a local Thai businessman made and being terrified by the gut wrenching stories about human trafficking. Even with the latter there, you can still have those other stories as well.

It's interesting how much PA's focus has shifted over the last decade or so

At this point I'm pretty sure most folks don't know or care what "PAX" stands for, and that con is barely associated with Penny Arcade these days anyways

This website and forum and even the webcomic itself are all essentially an appendix at this point, let alone the Trenches or the other side comics

Around the mid 10s they figured they were branching out too much. They had their own gaming news site, the Blams with Kurtz and Straub, video series with Two Player, Strip Search, I think a podcast in there somewhere, and that’s on top of the original pillars of PAX, Child’s Play, and of course the comic itself. So over the years a lot of the growth was shed to keep things manageable.

Kurtz was growing his own brand and the art duties went to a rotation of artists, and they eventually went on to other projects and I guess things ended. Considering the desire to get back to basics, I can guess that it wasn’t worth keeping the Trenches going with yet another artist when the goal was fewer projects. There’s been no official word as to why Trenches was discontinued, but there’s a decent guess.

Or, if you need a dramatic implosion: it was shut down after an artist was caught eating a live baby on camera.

I still check out the comic, but I just come here for the forum... maybe if PA featured more of that sexy manbeast Kris "manimal" Straub I would be more diligent about visiting the front page.

I just want more Broodhollow..... but I would also take more Blams

My favorite tale from the trenches was the one where the guy was complaining about how he was working on a game that used a specific tabletop gaming system and there was some asshole on the team who was incredibly anal about having to get every minute detail absolutely correct so that the game matched the tabletop system and how much of a pain it was to work with him.

And then later the guy in question posted his own tale and was basically something like "Yeah, that guy was me, also the game system was D&D so of fucking course we had to be overly anal about getting it perfect or the players would be pissed".

Funnily enough I generally catch the comic when they post it on Facebook, whereas my link here is right to the forums, and ending up on the main page is usually an accident or related to something specific like "they're doing what with the Patreon subs now?".

I hold a fondness for the comic to this day, and own (as far as I know) all of the book collections they've released. Maybe it wasn't profitable or the time/effort versus RoI wasn't working out but I did like having that collection and series of tales told alongside them.

Robert Khoo created them a media empire, and it turned out they super didn't want to run a media empire. That's totally valid! But Khoo left and G&T didn't seem to have much of a plan for the system shutdown. Which is super on-brand for PA minus Khoo, unfortunately

As far as my interaction with the front page, I have a hard time distinguishing between Jerry's nicknames for Mike/virtual characters/actual people I am not familiar with, so it makes some things harder to parse than they should be, especially with regards to their streams.

I can't keep up with livestreams, although I always like Kiko, Dabe, Ryan Hartman, Laura (from Work) and Josh. I think they should update https://www.penny-arcade.com/about and https://www.twitch.tv/pennyarcade/about to also have some information about the other people who do shows or make stuff for PA.

Dabe is a separate person? As an old who doesn’t do streaming I only interact with main PA through the comic and sometimes news posts, so I thought it was just another of Jerry’s deliberately mangled nicknames for Mike.

No, see Dabe is Dabe and Gabe is Gorb, Jim, Gabriel, uncle Jim, uncle Gabe... uhh

    Serious answer, though :
Dabe has been with PA for like 8 years as their main graphic designer. If there's a graphic element on something from PA, it's probably from him (pins, T-shirts, websites, decals, banners etc). He also streams a bunch on the Twitch
